“ | I am Lyn, of the Lorca tribe. You're safe now. | ” | — Lyn to Mark |
---|
Lyndis (Japanese: リンディス Lindis), more commonly known as Lyn (Japanese: リン Lin), is one of the Lorca tribe of Sacae, the sole survivor of a massacre of the tribe by the bandits of Taliver. She is the daughter of Hassar, the Lorca chieftain, and Madelyn, the daughter of Lord Hausen of Caelin, and she was named for her late grandmother, Hausen's wife; both of her parents perished in the Taliver assault. Some months after the demise of her tribe, she was embroiled in an inheritance dispute spearheaded by her granduncle Lundgren after learning of her Caelin heritage, and a year afterward joined Eliwood and Hector in their investigations into the Black Fang and the activities of Nergal.
Lyn is one of the three main characters of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, along with Eliwood and Hector; unlike her co-stars, she was created specifically for The Blazing Blade, as was the territory of Caelin, and as such her ultimate fate is not even hinted at in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, the chronological successor game.
Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Role
Lyn's tale
Months after the death of her parents and the rest of her tribe, living alone in some corner of Sacae, Lyn found Mark on the ground. She asked to travel with him so she could seek to avenge her dead parents. In Bulgar, she met Sain and Kent, knights of Caelin who were tasked with finding and informing her of her true heritage: that she is the granddaughter of Hausen, Caelin's marquess. From there, her journey changed to traveling to Caelin to to meet her grandfather. Early on, they stopped at a Sacaen shrine and acquire the Mani Katti, a sacred sword that only Lyn can use.
As her journey progressed, it arose that Lundgren, Hausen's younger brother, sought to end her life to ensure his succession to the rule of Caelin by dispatching mercenaries and bandits after her. All the same, Lyn met many companions that joined her in her journey, including Eliwood, the son of the marquess of Pherae, who assisted her from behind the scenes late in her journey. Ultimately, she reached Castle Caelin and slew Lundgren in battle. She was then taken to meet her grandfather, almost dead from the extensive poisoning by Lundgren, who was relieved to at least meet her before his death; she convinced him that he still has much living to do, and he quickly recovered. Still, due to his illness, Lyn took on many of his duties.
Eliwood/Hector's tale
One year later, with Caelin still largely under her care, the army of Laus came to Caelin while fleeing Laus itself and attacked the castle. On Hausen's orders, she fled the castle with Sain, Kent, Florina and Wil, leaving him trapped within under the Laus occupation. She dispatched Florina to quickly fly away to find help while the rest of the group stayed put in the dense, movement-hindering forests; Florina found that Eliwood and Hector's group were approaching, and so the two groups eventually united and worked together to free Caelin, with Lyn meeting Eliwood again. After the suppression of the Bern occupation, they found Hausen in the back rooms of the castle, injured by knife-wound from Ephidel but still alive, and first learned of the involvement of the Black Fang in Laus's insurrection. After ensuring that Caelin and her grandfather would be looked after, Lyn set out to accompany Eliwood and Hector for the remainder of their quest; traveling through Bern and to Valor. Along the way, she frequently provided advice and ideas to Eliwood and Hector, acting as a voice of restraint to Hector's brash ways.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Base level and pre-promotion performance
Lyn is available throughout Lyn Mode. In Eliwood Mode, she joins in Chapter 15, and in Hector Mode, she joins in Chapter 16. Regardless of whether the player has played Lyn Mode, Lyn will be among the fastest units when available. In fact, she is likely to be THE fastest unit in the player's army. She has no trouble doubling most enemies, and she will never get doubled.
Lyn also has the Mani Katti, a personal sword with 45 uses. Even if the player has played Lyn Mode and used the sword extensively, it will have replenished uses in Eliwood/Hector Mode. The sword has 8 might and effective damage against cavalry and armored units. Using this weapon increases Lyn's offensive potential by a significant margin. Since she doubles most enemies, she can one-round armored units and cavalry units with the Mani Katti. The sword also has 20 crit, giving Lyn a decent chance to kill enemies in a single strike.
Despite a good personal weapon, Lyn's offense is not amazing. Her base strength is exceptionally low – only 5 in Hector Mode. Playing Lyn Mode and training Lyn can increase her strength, but on average, she will only have 7 strength at level 10. This low base strength issue prevents her from one-rounding enemy Archers, Pegasus Knights and Mercenaries.
She can receive the Energy Ring from Lyn Mode to increase her strength by 2, mitigating that problem to an extent. However, many other Lyn Mode units can benefit from the Energy Ring, and Lyn is far from the best candidate. She may also get lucky with her strength growth and reach one-rounding thresholds. Still, that is luck-dependent and will not happen in most playthroughs.
Lyn's base strength may be low, but her durability is even more problematic. Without Lyn Mode training, she joins Eliwood/Hector Mode with a pitiful 18 HP, 2 defense, and 0 resistance. While she is fast enough to avoid getting doubled, this prevents her from taking more than one hit from any enemy.
If Lyn is trained in Lyn Mode and reaches level 10, she will have 22 HP, 4 defense, and 3 resistance on average. This looks much better on paper, but she still gets one-rounded by many enemy types in practice. The only enemy types that will not kill her in two hits are the weakest foes using iron weapons, such as archers and mercenaries.
While Lyn has high avoidance, it is not high enough to reliably dodge most enemies. She is good at dodging axe users' attacks, thanks to her weapon triangle advantage, but sword users still have a decent chance to hit her. Many enemies wielding swords have a high skill stat, so their accuracy is higher – making Lyn's avoidance less effective. There are also many lance-wielding enemies the player will face from the moment Lyn joins. In fact, most enemies in The Blazing Blade use lances, severely impeding Lyn's combat potential. Because of the weapon triangle disadvantage, Lyn cannot reliably dodge their attacks. This makes Lyn difficult to fight with on enemy phase. If Lyn takes more than one hit, she dies – and since her death causes a Game Over, the player will have to restart the chapter.
One could argue that she can use terrain bonuses to boost her avoidance further, but not all maps have terrain she can exploit. And even while she is standing on terrain, the more accurate enemy types can still hit her. Furthermore, enemies in The Blazing Blade prioritize attacking frail units – units like Lyn. If they have an opportunity to kill her, they are likely to take it. As such, Lyn is better at player phase combat than she is at enemy phase combat.
Another combat-related issue Lyn has is her weapon type. Because of the prevalence of enemy lance users, swords are the worst melee weapon type in The Blazing Blade. Lyn does not gain access to lances or axes even after promotion, so she will wrestle with this issue throughout the game. Swords also do not have a good 1-2 range option, unlike lances and axes. Lyn can never counter ranged enemies while using a sword, making her unable to fight them effectively on enemy phase. This is yet another combat-related problem Lyn has that many other units do not. Even units like Bartre and Dorcas, footlocked axe users with issues of their own, have 1-2 range and superior durability.
Unlike units like Matthew, Lyn offers no utility outside of combat, either, and as the game goes, more player units gain the ability to double, making Lyn's niche less useful. Enemies get slower over time in The Blazing Blade due to wielding heavier weapons. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, having tremendous speed is less useful in the midgame. Lyn's combat also suffers when she is not using the Mani Katti. Her constitution is low, so many swords weigh her down, decreasing her avoidance. She may also be unable to double if she wields a heavier sword, removing her greatest selling point. The Mani Katti may have a massive 45 uses, but if the player is using Lyn extensively, the sword will break at some point.
Promotion situation and post-promotion performance
Lyn's promotion requires a Heaven Seal, and this item is notoriously unavailable in The Blazing Blade. The player obtains the first Heaven Seal in Chapter 24 of Eliwood Mode or Chapter 26 of Hector Mode. Nearly every other promotion item, even the rare Ocean Seal, is available before then. If Lyn has been trained, she will be stuck unpromoted for a long time. Heaven Seals are also worth ten thousand gold when sold, compared to the five thousand of most other promotion items. This is a minor issue, but it can be a crucial factor in ranked runs. The third issue is that in Hector Mode, Eliwood competes with Lyn for the first Heaven Seal, and he has more to gain from it than Lyn does. Eliwood gains access to lances, an excellent weapon type, and gains a mount, significantly increasing his mobility. Lyn gains neither from her promotion, and promoting her takes away from Eliwood's potential. Hector's promotion is not as good as Lyn's, but Hector has access to axes, and is generally a much better unit than Lyn.
Because of Lyn's late promotion, most other units will outshine her before she can promote, even if the player trains Lyn alongside them. That said, her promotion has incredibly good statistical bonuses. It focuses on mitigating her greatest issues, that being durability and a low strength stat. She gains +3 HP, +2 strength, +3 defense, and +5 resistance, among other benefits.
She also gains a D-rank in bows, granting her a 2-range option for the player phase. This is not especially useful for the enemy phase, because melee enemies will attack Lyn without getting countered, but for the player phase, having access to bows can sometimes come in handy, particularly against durable enemies late into the game. That said, there are better bow users available, particularly Rath, who has a mount. The main issue is that Lyn did not need a 2-range option – she needed a 1-2 range option, and her promotion does not give her that. Still, once Lyn is promoted, she becomes a much better unit.
Lyn's endgame performance is subpar at best. She receives the Sol Katti to use in the last chapter, but this weapon is terrible. It has less might than a Silver Sword and weighs more than a Silver Axe. Since Lyn has constitution issues, using this weapon prevents her from doubling most enemies.
Lyn's durability issues also resurface here because the bosses in this chapter are immensely powerful. Lyn's defenses will still not be amazing at this stage of the game. Unless the player has used stat boosters like the Angelic Robe on Lyn, some bosses in the final chapter will one-shot her from full HP. If the player has not been lucky with Lyn's defensive level-ups, fighting any boss with her puts her at a huge risk of dying.
Overall
Lyn has a few advantages: a very high speed value in the early game and a strong personal weapon – the Mani Katti. She is also a highly available unit, trainable since the beginning of Lyn Mode. However, she has many significant issues impeding her performance. Lyn has a mediocre constitution, low base strength, terrible durability, and poor weapon type selection. Even promotion and stat boosters do not completely nullify her weaknesses. She is difficult to use without getting her killed and has few situations where she excels. While not the worst character in the game, Lyn has few niches she fulfills, and the few maps she is force deployed do not justify her use.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Two versions of Lyn are playable as bonus units in Awakening: a free one through SpotPass as part of the Fire Emblem character set, and a paid one from the DLC chapter package Smash Brethren 3.
Lyn is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Champions of Yore DLC series, the second and third installments of Smash Brethren, and the second and third installments of Rogues & Redeemers. Additionally, she appears as an ally unit in Champions of Yore 2.

Fire Emblem Warriors
Role
Lyn appears in Warriors as a playable character; she is one of the last playable characters that the player will unlock as her History Mode map, Noble Lady of Caelin, is only unlocked upon completing story mode. She does not appear in or have any story presence in the game's story mode. This is similar to how Celica is implemented in the game; both characters could be seen as bonus characters.
Lyn shares her moveset with Navarre, a downloadable character.

Personality
Lyn is a friendly, determined character who tries hard to reach her goals. She is quite positive and believes that she can achieve her goals. She has pride in her Sacae heritage, and is not willing to tolerate when that is insulted. As a lady of the Sacae plains, she never lies. She is strong and often slightly offended when anyone underestimates her because of her gender. Additionally, since she was brought up outside of the palaces of Lycia, she knows little of noble manners and customs. This does not mean she is savage, though, and Lyn is very friendly and polite to those around her. She has a strong sense of justice and is very persistent.

As an Emblem, Lyn does not have any support conversations. However, upon reaching bond level 5, 10, and 20 with any character, she has short bond conversations with them instead, which unlock the next bond level. Increasing bond level provides a variety of bonuses, such as raising the stat bonus Lyn provides to synchronized units, inheriting weapon proficiencies, unlocking new sync skills and engage weapons, or extending the duration of each engagement.

We're nothing like them!! Those fiends will even kill women and children! We're from Ganelon, and we know a little something of honor. We don't harm women, for one thing. Heh heh heh. After all, why kill what you can sell? Lyn: If you're not Taliver, then there's no reason for you to die here today. If you would like to tuck your tails and flee, do so now. Migal: You... You... Trivia
- In the English localization of The Blazing Blade, Lyn's age was changed from 15 to 18 by changing a line of dialogue with regards to Lyn's mother Madelyn eloping in the past.[5][6] However, Wallace and Kent's C support conversation was not edited to reflect this, and still claims that Lyn's parents eloped 17 years prior to Eliwood's and Hector's tales;[7] the correct figure according to the English localization should be 20 years prior.
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the North American version of Lyn's trophy says that she is fifteen years old. This is true for the Japanese series, but in the English localization of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, her age was increased to eighteen. This was corrected for the PAL release.
- In the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, due to concerns raised by CERO, Lyn's trophy was updated to be less revealing in Version 1.0.6. However, her in-game model was left unchanged.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Wendee Lee is erroneously credited as voicing Lyn. Ultimate instead reuses Lani Minella's voiceover of the character from Brawl and Smash 4.

Lyn |
Variant of "Lynn", an English name derived from the Welsh llyn, "lake".[8] It is sometimes alternatively interpreted as a short form of "Linda", from the Spanish and Portuguese linda, "beautiful". |
Japanese |
リン |
Officially romanized as Lin. In addition to the above etymology, "Lin" itself may alternatively derive from the Chinese 琳, "jade"[9], perhaps in reference to the character's green hair. |
