Appearance(s)

Muarim (Japanese: ムワリム Mwarim) is a tiger laguz that appears in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He fights to end laguz slavery with his companion Tormod, whom he calls "Little One".

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Role

At some point before the events of the game, Muarim found the beorc orphan Tormod and began raising him. Together they formed the Laguz Emancipation Army to free laguz slaves.

Muarim first appears as the boss of Chapter 15, after the Greil Mercenaries have been ordered by Sanaki to drive out "bandits" in the Grann Desert. Ike attempts to talk to Tormod to clear up the situation, but Tormod angrily orders the laguz to attack them. After defeating Muarim, Ike realizes something is not right, and Tormod explains to him that they are escaped laguz slaves fighting for their freedom. The Greil Mercenaries, along with Tormod and Muarim, travel back to explain the situation to Sanaki, but she reveals that her intention was for Ike to meet them and learn the reality of laguz slavery firsthand, as many corrupt nobles still possess them. Tormod and Muarim join the party after that.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Muarim is the second tiger to join in the game. He has excellent physical base stats all around, comparable with recently promoted beorc units, with high strength and decent skill, speed, and defense. He has excellent mobility as a laguz, decent enough untransformed but able to keep up with mounted units when transformed. As a laguz with very high weight, he can shove many mounted units which is a valuable niche. He has a slow transformation gauge, though one turn faster than Mordecai's. He joins with a Demi Band which lowers his stats but keeps him transformed while it's equipped; this gives him a lot of flexibility for combat. Unfortunately as a laguz unit, he is limited by permanent lack of 2-range and lack of forges, so eventually beorc units will surpass his offense as better weapons and forges become available. He also has very low resistance and is vulnerable to fire magic.

Muarim has excellent growths all around, with one of the best strength, skill, and defense growths in the game, and enough speed growth to keep up. His growths are limited by his experience gain, as he joins as a higher-level laguz unit when most other units are significantly lower-leveled. Muarim's weight is high but only enough to shove Titania, Astrid, Marcia, and Tanith out of the mounted units. One statue frag will let him shove Oscar, Kieran, and Makalov, and a second will let him shove Jill and Geoffrey, so Muarim is one of the best candidates for these statue frags to improve his shoving utility.

Muarim has no base skills. As a high-weight laguz, he has the best shoving utility after Mordecai. Since Mordecai already knows Smite, Muarim is the best candidate for the Smite scroll. For combat skills, due to his ridiculous skill base and growth, he works well with most skill-based skills like Adept and Guard.

Muarim has a thunder affinity which gives a defense and avoid boost. Unfortunately none of his support partners provide any extra defense, so he only gains +1 defense from an A support at best. Lethe is another laguz and his only partner with similar movement transformed, but she has a heaven affinity (pure accuracy) which does not benefit Muarim much. Zihark is Muarim's most useful partner despite their movement difference, as Zihark provides an earth affinity (pure avoid), complementing Muarim's thunder affinity and increasing both units avoid and durability. Largo's wind affinity gives a little avoid and accuracy which Largo himself benefits from, but Muarim only appreciates the extra avoid.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

After the Mad King's War, Muarim—along with Tormod—continued to live in the Grann Desert with their fellow escaped slaves, and they still ran the Laguz Emancipation Army.

Muarim first appears in Part I, Chapter 7 as an NPC, accompanying Tormod so he can inform Sothe of Sanaki's message. After the battle, he reveals to Micaiah that he is aware that she is a Branded, but that he bears her no ill will.

At the end of Part I, Chapter 8, Muarim inexplicably starts losing control of his shifting and begins to lose his sanity; Sothe realizes he has been given the Feral One drug somehow. Muarim's degeneration is halted when Rafiel sings the galdr of rebirth.

Muarim accompanies Tormod back to the Grann Desert after Daein's Liberation. He later accompanies Tormod when he starts traveling to the Tower of Guidance, meeting up with the Greil Army in Part IV, Chapter 4.

The boost is a +5 for max HP, and +2 for strength, magic, skill, speed, luck, defense or resistance. See Data transfer § Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for more information.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Muarim is a tiger laguz that joins during chapter 1-7 and is available for 1-8 and 1-E. Then he is no longer available for the rest of the game until 4-4 and endgame. For Part I, he is easily one of the best combat units. His base stats are among the best, with overkill attack, enough speed to double all enemy units, and excellent physical durability. He also has excellent mobility, which is especially useful for ledges even untransformed. With high constitution, he also makes a good shove bot. His weaknesses are being weak to fire magic, no 2-range, and relying on a transformation gauge, albeit a fast one. Olivi Grasses are available to fix this.

Muarim is then no longer available for the majority of the game until chapter 4-4. He can still contribute in this rout chapter without investment, because he starts the chapter transformed, he can still 2-hit weaker enemy units, and he can take some hits. However, he will often get doubled and will get slaughtered by magic, and his luck is very low. He should typically be used temporarily to help clean up a straggler or two, then ignored for endgame as it takes too much investment to turn him into a laguz that's effectively a slightly weaker laguz royal.

Should the player wish to use him for endgame, it is recommended to return to base in 4-4 and give him some levels of BEXP and a speedwing. As his level isn't particularly high at this point, he will also gain a lot of standard combat experience in 4-4. Muarim has some of the best growths for a laguz, having good strength, skill, and luck growths. While his speed and defense growths are bad, he can cap strength and skill quickly, so his weaker stats can be easily patched with BEXP. As laguz gems are available in endgame, his weakness of relying on a transformation gauge is less impactful, but he is generally outclassed by the laguz royals for endgame.

Muarim starts with no skills. Due to his awkward availability, it is not recommended to assign him any skills at the end of Part I as those skills cannot be managed until near endgame. For 4-4 and onward, smite lets Muarim function as a stronger smitebot. If invested, he's a good candidate for a satori sign to learn Roar due to his excellent strength base and growth. Quickclaw gives him a 2-range option, but it is extremely unreliable.

Muarim has a thunder affinity which gives a valuable defense and avoid boost. Due to his awkward availability, his only good available partners are Tormod and Vika, but neither have affinities that complement his thunder affinity. Other units with a thunder, earth, or water affinity will complement Muarim's affinity as they all give either defense or avoid. In particular, a unit from Part I that's also on Ike's team for Part IV can work like Jill or Tauroneo, but this comes at the cost of not letting them have a real support partner for Part III. In general, it's recommended to support Muarim with Tormod/Vika or nobody at all until Part IV.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

Muarim was first added to the game in a special fallen variation, based on his temporary drug-induced insanity from Izuka's Feral Ones drug, as part of the To Be Emperor update, and was made available to players in the sixty-seventh Grand Hero Battle, which initially ran from May 11, 2022, through May 18, 2022. The aforementioned fallen variation of Muarim is the only one currently available in Heroes, based on his Radiant Dawn incarnation.

Path of Radiance

Be careful. There's still some enemies.
— An unused quote intended to be Muraim's escape quote.
My companions and I are not thieves. I'm sure you could not care less, though!
— Muarim, as the boss of Chapter 15 in Path of Radiance.
Ike: If what you say is true... If you really aren't bandits, then stop fighting! If this is some kind of mistake, we can talk it over.
Muarim: Ha! I won't fall for that trick. That's how your kind always deceives and traps us. ...Here I come!
Ike: Hey!

— Muarim, when fighting Ike in Chapter 15.
Muarim: What? No, not another child...
Mist: ...
Muarim: Stop! Your sword hand, it's trembling! ...Please! Don't do this!
Mist: ...No...I will not be the only one who runs away!

— Muarim, when fighting Mist in Chapter 15.
Muarim: What? You're so young...
Rolf: I-I'm not scared of you! It doesn't matter if you're a laguz; an enemy is an enemy!
Muarim: Please! Stop! Why are young cubs like you on the battlefield? Why?

— Muarim, when fighting Rolf in Chapter 15.
Lethe: Listen to me, brother. Come to your senses and stop this!
Muarim: Heed my words! Do not throw away your laguz pride and run with humans like–
Lethe: What did you say? You are one to speak of pride! You who associate with a band of common thieves!
Muarim: This is a waste of time. Come, I will show you the truth of my words.
Lethe: Uh!

— Muarim, when fighting Lethe in Chapter 15.
Muarim: Move away, brother tiger. I have no wish to fight one of my own.
Mordecai: I do not wish to harm you, either. Let's stop fighting and talk.
Muarim: ...Talk? It seems you've already been tamed. ...How unfortunate... Now you die!
Mordecai: Ah! Stop!

— Muarim, when fighting Mordecai in Chapter 15.
Sothe: ...G-gulp! C-calm down... Oh, my heart's...beating so fast... Gotta aim for a vital spot! C-careful...
Muarim: ..What? You there! Stop! I don't fight children!

— Muarim, when fighting Sothe in Chapter 15.
Sorry to have kept you waiting. I'll join the fray directly.
— Muarim, if chosen as reinforcement in Chapter 17.
Oliver: St-stay back! A filthy beast like you... How dare you approach a sanctified personage such as myself!
Muarim: Who is it that decided that a laguz life is worth less than a human? Do you believe the goddess Ashera, whom you claim to worship, would want it to be so?
Oliver: Aaaaaaah! Monster! Hideous, vile monster! You will not defile the name of the goddess!
Muarim: Monster? Which of us is the true monster?

— Muarim, when fighting Oliver in part four of Chapter 17.
Naesala: You're not of the Gallia beast tribes, are you? Laguz slaves! Bah! Instead of baring your claws and escaping, you moan and cry! What a pack of fools.
Muarim: ...
Naesala: Hah! Cat got your tongue? Unless you're incapable of speech, you're either angry or frightened. Either way, you're pathetic. If you'd stayed in your cage, you wouldn't need to die here, hmm?

— Muarim, when fighting Naesala in Chapter 19.

Radiant Dawn

Oliver: Sub...sub...sub-human! Tiger! Tiger! Eyes burning bright! In my foyer late at night! Oh, my poetic soul! I'm much too delicate for this!
Muarim: Oh boy...

— Muarim, when fighting Oliver in Part IV, Chapter 4.

Death quotes

... I will not miss this body... I've only one wish in my heart... Child... Live strong. ...
— Muarim, in Path of Radiance if Tormod is still alive.
Child...now... Next to... ...
— Muarim, in Path of Radiance if Tormod had previously died.
...Urk... N-no...
— Muarim, as an enemy in Chapter 15 of Path of Radiance.
Muarim: ...Ugh.
Tormod: Stand back, Muarim! I won't allow you to push yourself anymore!
Muarim: I... I'm sorry...little one.

— Muraim, in Radiant Dawn.
Ghk... I'm sorry... I can go no farther...little...one...
— Muarim, in Part I, Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.

Here's Muarim, the second-in-command of the Laguz Emancipation Army! Together with his allies Tormod and Vika, he joined the Daein Liberation Army to break free from Begnion's oppressive rule. Muarim was the victim of a tragedy not long after returning from battle—one of his allies gave him a dose of a potion with disastrous effects! The effects of the potion made Muarim lose all control and sapped his vitality. Even when Tormod and the others called out to him, he only growled… This maddened state left Muarim writhing in pain, but thankfully, he was brought back by the song of the heron laguz. I hope he takes plenty of time to rest so he can get right back to being the upstanding, heroic leader we know so well!

Trivia

  • In Path of Radiance, Muarim is the only playable laguz unit whose death quote implies that he actually dies instead of merely retreating.
  • In the Introductions page in the North American version of Radiant Dawn, Muarim mistakenly has Mist's description. This error was not present in the Japanese version and was fixed in the PAL version.
  • According to Tellius Recollection, Muarim was designed with an apparent age of 27 in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn.[1][2]
