“ | Women are clerics. I am a priest. Well, technically a war monk, if you care to split hairs... | ” | — Libra, discussing his gender with Chrom |
---|
Libra (Japanese: リベラ Riviera) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem Awakening and priest in the service of Ylisse.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Libra is recruited in Chapter 9 after spoken to with Chrom. He is the only playable character that starts in the War Monk class.
Libra was a member of a squad of priests who were deployed to Plegia to try and rescue Exalt Emmeryn from her announced execution. The squad was attacked en route to the site, of which Libra was the sole survivor. He nonetheless made it to the site and joined forces with the Shepherds to assist them in rescuing her.
Despite failing to save Emmeryn he remains with the Shepherds for the rest of the war with Plegia, and later the war with Walhart.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Libra is a level 1 War Monk starting in Chapter 9 of Awakening as an NPC, where Chrom must talk to him to recruit him. As a prepromote, his stats are better than the enemies, but the gap quickly narrows as the difficulty gets higher. His growths aren't the worse either, with defense being the lowest at 35%, and strength and resistance at 40%, but they can be higher depending on the class he is in. Libra's cap modifiers are not bad either, with a +1 in magic, skill, and resistance, and a -1 in luck. Starting as a War Monk, he comes with Priest's skills of Miracle for a chance to survive a lethal blow, and Healtouch for five extra points of HP when using a healing staff. At level 5, he gets Rally Luck for being more supportive, and at level 15 gets the great Renewal skill, which is great with when his bulk is not as good. He also starts with a C in axes, letting him use the Killer Axe in his inventory, the Steel Axe, and Hand Axe. His base C in staves lets him use great staves such as Physic, Rescue, and the Mend and Ward staves in his inventory.
His combat is fairly solid at first, but he tends to regress into a staffbot over time unless reclassed out of War Monk, particularly on Lunatic(+). This is mainly caused by his mediocre speed and strength. His speed, while initially sufficient to get by, scales slower than the enemies, and he will easily get doubled by faster enemies like Heroes or Swordmasters. Combined with forged enemy weapons, this results in Libra getting ORKO'd without speed support. Likewise, his strength doesn't scale fast enough to let him keep up with enemy HP inflation, allowing him to chip but not consistently kill once the enemy roster is fully promoted. Finally, without DLC or SpotPass, the game's first and only Bolt Axe is in Chapter 21, which is very late. That being said, in the short term, Libra can still contribute effectively with his solid bulk and Killer Axe crit-OHKOs. His decent bulk and C-Axes allow him to pick up a Hammer and deal with the Knights in Chapter 12 and 14 or a Hand/Short Axe for enemy magic users. Regardless, over time he will be relegated to staff duty, where his mediocre combat does not matter.
Due to the limited amount of classes that increase his strength growth he can reclass to, fully investing in his magic stat could make him significantly better. From Priest, he can reclass to Sage from his main classline. This class increases his magic, skill, and speed growths, and reduces his HP, strength, and defense growths. Sage is one of the best magical classes in the game, having access to tomes for offense, and staves for support; due to high staff EXP output, Libra can reach Lv10 War Monk fairly quickly for a direct reclass into Sage via Second Seal. His biggest gain in doing so is cheap and immediate access to damage that scales off of his magic stat; even with E-rank tomes, he can deal out some respectable 1-2 range chip damage without the shortcomings of his Axe use in War Monk. Rally Magic is one of the best rally skills, and Tomefaire is a great skill for some extra damage with tomes if he will have his final class be one that uses them, which is pretty likely.
His first reclass option is Mage, which has the same growths as Sage. Magic +2 is insignificant, and Focus can be useful for some extra crit, but it is usually never worth it to reclass to a base class. Mage also has access to Sage, but gains access to Dark Knight for another physical magical hybrid. Dark Knight trades axes for swords, staves for tomes, and supplies a higher HP and skill growth, but a reduced resistance growth. His great skill makes Slow Burn not super noteworthy, and Lifetaker is great if his bulk has a hard time keeping pace with the might of the enemy.
Libra has another magical reclass option with its own advantages as well. Dark Mage's main gimmick is the use of dark magic tomes on top of the regular ones. Hex and Anathema both reduce the dodging capabilities of the enemy with slightly varying effects, which could be worth pursuing. Dark Mage can also reclass to Dark Knight, but gains access to the amazing Sorcerer class, which is basically a more combat oriented Sage, . Vengeance has the chance to add extra damage to his attacks in proportion to how much HP he has lost, and Tomebreaker is a great skill for an extra fifty hit and avoid against tomes.
Libra is the only father aside from Ricken and Henry to pass a good increase to a child's magic growth. Out of the most optimal parings, fathering Laurent is potentially the worst as he only will receive the Priest class tree. Inheriting Renewal would be very good, but the main draw is War Monk, and he does not have a great strength growth as one, and he already has Sage in his base inheritance from his mother. This can be still be okay if the other candidates are already taken.
Marrying Maribelle and fathering Brady is a bit better, as Brady receives the great Dark Mage class tree, with the main draw being Sorcerer, as he does not have it in his base kit. He even has a passible strength growth as a War Monk and Dark Knight, and all his other growths are pretty good except defense. The biggest problem with this pairing is really only the -2 strength mod if the player wants a mixed offense Brady, but this is not as bad as the problems with Laurent. This is probably Libra's best pairing since most of the wives he can have would have their child's strength growth severely hurt, and they really do not need any of the magical classes that he passes. However, Henry does the job of passing Dark Mage better with also passing several other classes, providing slightly better growths, and having a -1 strength modifier compared to Libra's -2. Thus, Libra may have some competition with this pairing.
A sort of oddball pick that does not seem good at first glance is Lissa. With this pairing, Owain still has a great strength growth, and has good magic growths when in magical classes. The biggest draw with this pairing would be a mixed offense Dark Knight, so that Owain can still use his main weapon of swords, fight well with tomes, and have great movement.

Personality
Libra is typically calm, composed and somewhat stoic. He acts the part of a man of the cloth; offering smiles and comfort to others, though he is concerned his own actions are of naught but a hollow shell.[1] He pays high amounts of attention to even the tiniest details. In his worship as a priest, he is very devout and prays to the gods more than anyone else in Chrom's army. He sports very feminine facial features which, combined with his long hair, leads to him being constantly mistaken for a female.
As a child Libra's parents did not care for him properly; Libra himself he only escaped them when he became a priest.[2] Before he joined the church he had been abandoned due to his parents thinking he was under demonic influence.[3] He received physical punishments at the orphanage he was eventually left at, resulting in a scar on the back of his neck.[4]

- Libra is one of the only three male characters in the Fire Emblem games (alongside Rolf and male Kana) to have a female voice actress in English.
