Mercurius
| ||||||
|
Mercurius (Japanese: メリクル Mercury) is a regalia sword introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. It is one of the Three Regalia of the Holy Kingdom of Archanea, known by the epithet "the spectral sword"[1] or "magic blade",[2] and is the sister weapon of Gradivus and Parthia. In its original appearance in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Mercurius was a personal weapon usable only by Marth, but from Mystery of the Emblem onward it lost this association and became available for use by any sword-wielding unit.
History
Along with Gradivus and Parthia, Mercurius was stolen from its unidentified origin by the thief Adrah, and was a valuable asset in his conquering of the land.[3] When Adrah formed the kingdom of Archanea, Mercurius was named one of its three Regalia, and was passed down through the generations of Archanean royalty.
Following the fall of Archanea at the onset of the War of Shadows, Mercurius was stolen by the army of Grust. Late in the war, when Minerva of the Whitewings allies with Marth's liberation army, her subordinate Est heard of Grust's possession of the sword and flew there to retrieve it from them, then gave the blade to Marth as she joined his forces at Chiasmir.[4] After the war, Mercurius was returned to the possession of House Archanea, and was given to Astram in his role as the captain of the newly-formed Archanean Free Company.[5] Astram continued to wield it in the intervening years and in the War of Heroes, taking it with him when he was convinced by Jeorge to defect to Marth's army in the face of Emperor Hardin's corruption.
On the continent of Fódlan, a rusted sword bearing the name Mercurius and noted to have been used in the War of the Eagle and Lion could be found in the clutches of roaming monsters, taken into the possession of the mercenary Byleth, and used in the war plaguing the continent. What connection this Mercurius bears to the Archanean regalia, if one exists, is unclear.

Trivia
- In every game it appears in but one, Mercurius has the highest, or at least joint-highest, raw might of all swords in the game in question. The exception is Shadows of Valentia, where it is bested by the Lightning Sword and the Shadow Sword. In Mystery of the Emblem, it is in a six-way tie for having the highest might of any weapon in the game, tied with Parthia, Gradivus, the Devil Axe, Pachyderm and Aura.

English |
Mercurius |
From Mercurius, a Roman messenger god whose name is commonly rendered in English as "Mercury". |
English (unofficial) |
Miracle |
Alternative interpretation of the katakana メリクル used in the Quirino Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and RPGuy96 Mystery of the Emblem fan translations. |
Japanese |
• メリクル |
• Officially romanized as Mercury; the common anglicized form of Mercurius, as above. This name is used in menus in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, and in all instances (except Shadows of Valentia) from Shadow Dragon onward. It should be noted that the katakana does not quite read "Mercury". It appears to be a corruption of メルクリウス Merukuriusu, the Japanese rendering of "Mercurius", with the last two kana omitted and ル ru and リ ri swapped. |
