Byleth (pronounced /ˈbaɪlɛθ/[key][6]; Japanese: ベレト or ベレス Byleth) is the avatar unit and protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. During the course of the game they become a teacher at the Officers Academy.
Biography
Byleth was born of Jeralt and Sitri, a nun of the Church of Seiros in Imperial Year 1159, in critical condition and not breathing. Rhea took the Crest Stone of Flames from Sitri (who failed to achieve the progenitor god's conscience, and was also in critical condition) and placed it within the infant Byleth's heart, both to save the infant Byleth as well as to try again to reawaken the goddess Sothis; this resulted in Sitri's death.[7] However, this had the consequence of Byleth having extremely little emotion until the goddess started to reawaken around the start of the game.[8] Jeralt, seeing the infant's oddities and fearing Rhea's plans for them, took advantage of a fire to fake both their deaths and fled the monastery. The two spent the next twenty years wandering Fódlan as part of a mercenary troop.
One day, Jeralt's aid is requisitioned by three young nobles under attack by bandits: Princess Edelgard von Hresvelg of the Adrestian Empire, Prince Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and Lord Claude von Riegan of the Leicester Alliance. During the battle, Byleth sacrifices themselves to save Edelgard from an attack; this awakens Sothis' consciousness within them, and she grants them the power of Divine Pulse to rewind time. Afterwards, the Knights of Seiros reunite with Jeralt and convince him to return to the Church, where Rhea offers Byleth a teaching position at the Officers Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery. Byleth chooses one of three academic houses to lead: Edelgard's Black Eagles, Dimitri's Blue Lions, or Claude's Golden Deer, and spends the next year teaching them and fighting alongside them. During this time, a masked individual calling themselves the Flame Emperor and a cult known only as "those who slither in the dark" launch attacks on the Church. During a raid on the Church's Holy Mausoleum, Byleth discovers the Sword of the Creator and learns they possess the Crest of Flames, the Crest borne by the King of Liberation Nemesis in ancient history. Rhea entrusts the sword to them. Eventually, the assassin Kronya murders Jeralt; Byleth pursues her into the Sealed Forest outside Garreg Mach, falls into a trap, and is banished into a realm of darkness. Sothis sacrifices her individuality to grant Byleth the full extent of her power, allowing them to escape. In the aftermath, Rhea takes them to the Holy Tomb far underneath Garreg Mach to receive a divine revelation. The Flame Emperor interrupts the ritual to raid the Tomb, and in the ensuing battle is revealed to be Edelgard. If Byleth is a Black Eagle and attended her coronation as emperor earlier that month, they can defect to the Empire; otherwise, they remain allied with the Church. Edelgard, who views the Church as corrupt due to propagating the worship of Crests which led to the deaths of her siblings, declares war on the Church and attacks Garreg Mach. The Empire wins the battle, and Byleth is severely injured and falls into a coma for the next five years.
What happens after the five year time skip depends on which class Byleth chose to teach upon arriving at Garreg Mach Monastery.
If Byleth chose to lead the Blue Lions, they awaken to Fódlan being conquered nearly in its entirety by Edelgard and the Adrestian Empire. Faerghus has been divided between the loyalists and an Adrestian puppet state known as the Faerghus Dukedom. Returning to the Monastery, they find a disheveled and ruthless Dimitri in the Tower of the Goddess. The pair are tracked down by Gilbert and the rest of the Blue Lions, as they set up Garreg Mach as a staging ground for their resistance against Adrestia. Byleth and the Blue Lions petition Judith von Daphnel of the Leicester Alliance for reinforcements. After bringing Dimitri back to his senses, the Blue Lions march into and liberate Fhirdiad, the capital of Faerghus. Afterwards, after saving the Leicester Alliance from an Imperial assault, they head into Adrestian held territory, conquering Fort Merceus and continuing to the capital of Enbarr. Edelgard is killed, and Dimitri unites Fódlan under the flag of Faerghus, with Byleth at his side.
If Byleth chose to lead the Golden Deer, they awaken to Fódlan being almost entirely conquered by the Adrestian Empire. After reuniting with Claude and defending the Golden Deer's newly set up base at Garreg Mach, the Leicester Alliance is reunited and the Golden Deer invade and defeat Adrestia, killing Edelgard in the process. Edelgard's retainer Hubert sends Byleth and Claude a letter post mortem revealing that the Empire's actions were influenced by those who slither in the dark. Armed with this information, the Golden Deer assault the underground city of Shambhala and defeat their leader Thales. However, the King of Liberation, Nemesis is revived and cuts a swathe through Alliance territory. Byleth and the Golden Deer confront Nemesis at the Caledonian Plateau and defeat him. After the war, Claude unites Fódlan under the Leicester Alliance and dissapears.
If Byleth chose to lead the Black Eagles, the route they take depends on whether they chose to side or oppose Edelgard during the conflict in the Holy tomb. This decision can be unlocked by having Byleth attain a C+-rank support with Edelgard and speak with her during exploration in Chapter 11. If this is not achieved, the player will be automatically put on the Silver Snow route.
If Byleth sides with the Church, the Silver Snow route is played. Byleth awakens to find that the Kingdom has been reduced to a puppet state, Dimitri is presumed dead, the Alliance has fractured into pro-Church and pro-Empire factions, Claude has been struggling to maintain a facade of neutrality, Rhea has been captured by the Empire, the Knights of Seiros have scattered to the four winds to find her and Byleth, and the Empire is on the verge of conquering Fódlan. Byleth rallies an army to combat the Empire, with the exact details varying depending on the route. After a massive three-way battle between the Empire, Kingdom, and Alliance known as the Battle at Gronder, Byleth directly invades Adrestia and conquers Fort Merceus, a critical stronghold on the path to the Imperial capital of Enbarr. They then launch a direct invasion of Enbarr itself, and kill Edelgard. On the Azure Moon route, the war ends here; Dimitri and the Kingdom unite Fódlan under the former's rule, and Byleth becomes archbishop of the Church after Rhea retires. On the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes, Hubert posthumously warns them about those who slither in the dark, and Byleth besieges their stronghold Shambhala and kills their leader Thales. After defeating either Rhea after she suffers a draconic degeneration-induced mental breakdown due to injuries sustained in Shambhala (Silver Snow) or Nemesis after he is resurrected by those who slither in the dark as a last act of spite against Fódlan (Verdant Wind), Byleth unites the continent as the first ruler of the United Kingdom of Fódlan.
If Byleth sides with the Empire, the Crimson Flower route is played. They awaken to find that Dimitri has granted Rhea asylum and sided with the Church, and the two of them have fought the Empire to a stalemate while Claude and the Alliance remain nominally neutral. Byleth and Edelgard launch a renewed offensive, conquer and annex the Alliance, and either kill or exile Claude. After beating back a counterattack by the Church and assassinating a high-ranking member of those who slither in the dark, Byleth launches a direct invasion of Faerghus. Dimitri and Rhea intercept them at the Tailtean Plains, but the Empire emerges victorious, Dimitri is slain, and Rhea is forced to retreat to the Kingdom capital of Fhirdiad. Rhea orders Fhirdiad to be burned to the ground to slow the Imperial advance, but Byleth nevertheless defeats her and brings an end to the war. In the aftermath, Rhea's death causes the Crest Stone implanted in Byleth's heart to disintegrate, allowing their heart to start beating normally for the first time. Edelgard and the Empire unite the continent under the former's rule, and Byleth takes up arms against those who slither in the dark as their shadow war begins.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Role
Byleth is the avatar unit of Three Houses. They also function as a lord character, and their death is grounds for an immediate game over at all times. While Byleth is the primary protagonist of the game, they are a silent protagonist, unlike Kris and Corrin before them; however, they share this distinction somewhat with Robin in the Japanese version of Awakening, as that game offered a "silent protagonist" voice option for its avatar which was removed from the localization. As Byleth interacts with characters, the player is given options on how Byleth will respond to dialogue, which may change the reactions of the character they are speaking to. Each response may increase support points for a correct response depending on the partner's interests, or even decrease the partner's support points if the wrong answer was given.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Byleth is the main character of the game, and is a rather interesting unit overall. They start with solid bases overall, in particular an excellent base 13 strength, tied for highest in the game with Edelgard, and generally above-average stats in most other areas. While their charm base isn't exactly stellar, the consistent boosts from Tea Time on birthdays will prove to be quite the boon. Byleth will likely maintain this stat lead, as they have fairly solid growth rates all around and receive extra experience thanks to their personal ability, Professor's Guidance. At the start of the game, Byleth will be one of the player's strongest units, having better survivability than most of the students thanks to solid HP, speed, and defenses, while also boasting decent attack speed as well as solid single-hit damage via Wrath Strike when used with the Steel Sword that is obtained fairly early on.
Byleth has no outstanding weaknesses in either stats or weapon proficiencies, allowing them to take on whatever role the player desires. In addition, they gain a personal weapon in Chapter 4, the Sword of the Creator; this grants them a decent 1-2 range option, as well as a very powerful single-hit, anti-dragon attack, Ruptured Heaven. In addition to strong overall combat, the abilities and combat arts they gain from their skill proficiencies can also provide some interesting options. Battalion Vantage and Battalion Desperation can offer the effects of certain class mastery abilities without needing to spend time in those classes, while also having safer activation conditions than their regular counterparts. In addition, they can also learn the elusive Windsweep, which can allow them to safely damage some of the most offensively dangerous enemies without fear of retaliation.
Byleth possesses the Crest of Flames; this grants them a 20% chance of restoring HP equal to 30% of the damage they deal, improving their survivability on the front lines somewhat. If this effect activates, then there is a secondary 25% chance for their Crest to also allow them to deny enemy counterattacks and grant 5 extra might for the attack; since this is ultimately a 5% chance overall, however, it is not something that one can reliably form strategies around. In addition to these effects and the ability to wield the Sword of the Creator at full power, Byleth's Crest also ensures that they will not take recoil damage from any of the other Heroes' Relics, which can also be decently effective in their hands due to their aforementioned high natural strength.
Byleth's biggest weakness as a unit is how their unit growth interacts with the game's mechanics. Unlike their students, who can be tutored 4-5 times a weekend, stamina permitting, in any subject of the player's choice, Byleth starts off only able to be tutored 3 times a weekend, is limited to whatever faculty is available on hand, and also draws on the same pool of activity points to do other things such as cooking meals or participating in tournaments. The overall effect is that Byleth's growth is actually weaker than their students throughout Part I. Fortunately, they automatically receive the Enlightened One class at the end of Chapter 10. The Enlightened One serves as an excellent fall-back option for Byleth at the end of Part I and in general, as it possesses solid stats all around and the ability to use both brawling and magic, making Byleth a generalist who has an option for every situation. It can be particularly helpful for magic-oriented builds as, though it has lower raw magic and lacks the "faire" abilities of classes such as Warlock, it has a significant movement advantage over most other magic classes.
Recruiting other units in Three Houses is generally tied to Byleth's stats. If one intends to recruit all possible units, then at bare minimum, assuming they get B supports with everyone save Ferdinand and Caspar, they need D Lances, Bows, Reason, and Riding and D+ Faith and Authority on all routes, D Heavy Armor as a Black Eagle, D Axes as a Church-aligned Black Eagle or Blue Lion, D+ Swords and E+ Flying as a Black Eagle or Golden Deer, and C Brawling and Heavy Armor as a Blue Lion or Golden Deer in order to do so. While each threshold seems doable when taken individually, attempting to recruit absolutely everyone can prove to be a significant time investment, and can result in stunting Byleth's own growth through Part I due to a lack of focus in any skill.
Once Part II rolls around, things start looking up for Byleth. With more options to develop their strengths thanks to being able to take advanced drills from students, Byleth's strengths as a unit can grow much faster depending on the desired build. Byleth's well-rounded stats and lack of banes allows them to take on nearly any role in the army you want. For pure physical power and mobility, Wyvern Lord is an excellent option. However, female Byleth can choose the slightly weaker Falconknight class to dodge-tank better while still maintaining high mobility and Canto. Gremory is an excellent magical option, except that it is only available to female Byleth.
Fire Emblem Engage

There are nine different variations of Byleth available to Heroes—four male, five female—eight based on their appearances in Three Houses and one based on their appearance in Warriors: Three Hopes. The normal variation of female Byleth became available for summoning by players on July 22, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the Cohort of the Dead update; the normal variation of male Byleth was announced for release on or after July 26, 2019 to coincide with the release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, where players who purchased Three Houses on or before June 29, 2020 were be able to receive a free copy of the normal variation of male Byleth, and was first made available for regular summoning during the Mythic Hero Sothis banner, although he himself was not the Mythic Hero in question. A summer variation of female Byleth was made available on July 8, 2020 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Overseas Memories update, with this variation being a Duo Hero paired up with Rhea. A legendary variation of male Byleth, featuring him as an Enlightened One, was first made available to players on June 30, 2021 as the game's twenty-ninth Legendary Hero, while a legendary variation of female Byleth, also featuring her as an Enlightened One, was first made available to players on December 24, 2021 as the game's thirty-third Legendary Hero. A brave variation of female Byleth, dressed in the Sothis regalia from the Three Houses Expansion Pass, was made available on August 17, 2022 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the God of Openness update. A Khadein-themed variation of male Byleth was first made available to summon on January 9, 2023 as part of the Sage of Khadein? update. A fallen variation of female Byleth, based on her appearance when possessed by Sothis in the aftermath of Jeralt's death in Warriors: Three Hopes, was first made available to summon on May 9, 2023 as part of the Within Wheels update; notably, Cassandra Lee Morris voices this variation of Byleth instead of Jeannie Tirado, to represent Sothis having full control of Byleth's body. A winter variation of Byleth was added to the game and was first available to summon from December 14, 2023 to January 14, 2024; this version is a duo hero led by male Byleth and partnered with female Byleth.

Personality
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Byleth is often shown to lack emotions, particularly towards the start of Three Houses. As the player progresses through the story, some characters will point out that they are smiling more often. Byleth will also display other emotions, such as anger or disappointment, during story progression. Their personality is ultimately dependent upon the player's actions and dialogue choices; Byleth can be quite caring or indifferent, though rarely malicious.
Befitting of their status as the player avatar unit, the above serves to make Byleth a blank slate the player can easily project themselves unto and deepen the connection between them and the unfolding narrative.

Byleth/ Super Smash Bros. series
On January 16, 2020, Byleth, both male and female, were revealed to be the final fighter in the first Fighters Pass for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unlike the other Fire Emblem characters, Byleth uses both the Sword of the Creator and the Heroes' Relics: Areadbhar is used in their forward smash, forward and back aerials, and side special; Aymr is used for their down smash, down aerial, and down special; and Failnaught is used in their neutral aerial and special. Initially considered to be a low-tier character, Byleth received buffs in several patches afterward. Once MKLeo stated using Byleth, they climbed up the rankings to top tier. After a brief few months in that spotlight, MKLeo dropped Byleth in favor of Joker. Byleth now sits comfortably in mid to high tier, depending on who is asked.
Fire Emblem Cipher
Byleth is featured on sixteen cards in Fire Emblem Cipher, seven depicting the default male and nine depicting the default female. Unlike other characters who can be either male or female depending on the player's choice, such as Corrin or Morgan, Byleth's cards do not include (男) or (女) indicators next to their name, because Byleth's name is slightly different depending on gender. However, since the English version of Fire Emblem: Three Houses does not distinguish Byleth's two forms by name, (Male) and (Female) are included here for the convenience of readers, in the same fashion as characters such as the aforementioned Corrin and Morgan.
"New Teacher of the Officers Academy, Byleth (male)" is the card with the most different printings in Cipher to date, with six different printings across the eighteenth booster series and five promotional cards.

Byleth is the daughter of Jeralt, the former captain of the Knights of Seiros. She and her father wandered the continent of Fódlan during her early childhood. It seems that eventually she joined her father on the battlefield as a mercenary. | After an "unexpected incident," Byleth was brought to a monastery in central Fódlan—where she was offered a position as a teacher at the Officers Academy. | Byleth wields a legendary weapon called the Sword of the Creator. The legends said that only heroes of old could draw out its power, but apparently, Byleth can too! How strange! | Byleth isn't the chatty type, but her shrewd judgment and combat prowess have more than won her students' respect. Maybe she'll have a few lessons to share with the Order of Heroes! | ||

Trivia
- In Heroes, the male version of Byleth is the first hero to be introduced on a Legendary or Mythic banner without actually being a Legendary or Mythic Hero.
- Chris Niosi was the original English voice actor for male Byleth before being replaced by Zach Aguilar in both Three Houses and Heroes via updates as a result of Niosi's violations of non-disclosure agreements.[9] His voice clips from Heroes as portrayed by Niosi are still available online here.
- Through using Renown to purchase previously unlocked mastery skills, Byleth is the only character in Three Houses who can have both male and female-exclusive skills at the same time.
- On the skill purchase menu, Byleth uses the Commoner map sprite to represent any classes that they cannot access due to their gender.
- Byleth is tied with Ashe on the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes for changing factions the most times in Three Houses, with 3. They are part of the Mercenaries faction in the prologue, switch to the Church of Seiros throughout the rest of Part I, and finally switch to the Resistance Army/Holy Kingdom of Faerghus/Leicester Alliance/Adrestian Empire for Part II.
- In Warriors: Three Hopes, the player is prompted to enter Byleth's name. If the Nintendo Switch has save data for Three Houses, Byleth's name from the most recent playthrough will be used, unless this name was already used by Shez.

- ↑ "Rhea: I...created you. And within you is the Crest Stone of the progenitor god... I hid the Crest Stone within your heart in order to revive her. Sweet child... I am sorry. I wanted to see her...see my mother...even if it meant doing that which is forbidden.
Byleth: What does it all mean?
Rhea: I thought that I could regain all I had lost, if only I could revive my mother... And so I tried to bring her back by creating a body, and then burying a Crest Stone within it. A young woman I created...my twelfth try after much heartache...was a failure. She grew up lacking the conscience of the progenitor god and fell in love with the captain of the Knights of Seiros. In time, she became pregnant...but she and the child were not able to survive the birth. The child she bore was not breathing, and she herself was in grave danger. The new mother pleaded with me to take the Crest Stone of the progenitor god from her own body and place it within the baby. If I had done nothing, both mother and child would have died. And so I granted her final wish. As she had hoped, the baby started breathing again... The new life was saved. Your life, sweet child.
Byleth: ...
Rhea: Well before that, I had saved Jeralt's life using the power of my blood. That means you are the child of a mother born of the progenitor god's Crest Stone and a father who carried my own blood. I knew, deep in my heart, that you would be capable of housing the conscience of the progenitor god. I was right... And yet, she merely gifted her power to you and then disappeared once more. My dearest wish did not come true...but here you are. You alone wield the power of the progenitor god." — Conversation between Rhea and Byleth in Chapter 21 of Silver Snow, Fire Emblem: Three Houses - ↑ "Do you recall your father's diary?
