Karla (Japanese: カアラ Karla) is a playable Swordmaster in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. She is the sister of Karel, wife of Bartre, and mother of Fir.

Karla began training in swordsmanship to get closer to her brother. Karel had become obsessed with swordplay, and murdered their entire family in order to keep the secrets of their sword technique to himself; only Karla was spared due to refusing to wield "a skill that could only be used to kill". Karla went on a journey to track down her brother. During her travels in the Western Isles, she was challenged by Bartre and knocked him out in a single blow.

Eventually, Karla travels to Ostia at the same time Eliwood and Hector prepare for their final confrontation with Nergal. Bartre, now a member of their party, may challenge her to a rematch; if the battle ends inconclusively, Karla joins the group upon learning their objective, as her brother gravitates towards strong warriors.

After Nergal's defeat, she marries Bartre and has a daughter, Fir, who inherits her sword skills. Karla eventually dies of an illness some time before the Disturbance of Bern.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Karla appears in Chapter 31x of Hector Mode as a playable character, one of two exclusive to Hector Mode (the other being Farina).

Analysis

Karla is arguably the worst unit in The Blazing Blade, for several different reasons.

• Firstly, she provides nothing new: by this point, there are several sword fighting units who can do everything she can do just as competently. Lyn, Marcus, Jaffar, Harken, and Isadora are but a few examples of this, and a good few of them bring more to the table than just killing things.
• Second, her movement is average, and the upcoming chapters are very large and require lots of movement. Victory or Death, the chapter after she joins, is extremely big in particular, but there are a lot of dangerous areas in Light and mobility to rush in or out is vital to success.
• Third, because she uses swords, her options for 1–2 range (which is necessary for good enemy phase combat) are extremely limited, and the only 2 range attacks she can do are the magic swords Runesword, Light Brand, and Wind Sword (which requires the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! bonus disc), which negate the Swordmasters' critical bonus when attacking at range (or for the Runesword, at all).
• Fourth, her recruitment is extremely late into the game, and has several failure conditions, including if Bartre is killed, not trained, or not deployed. There is a lot of effort needed to get Bartre at an appropriate level throughout the game due to his terrible speed and overall shaky start, which only gets worse in Hector Hard Mode.
• Lastly, due to her late recruitment, she can only contribute for a few chapters before Athos and even Renault show her up in combat. Both of them hit resistance, which most enemies have less of than defense, and provide staff utility, which Karla cannot replicate.

Nevertheless, if you absolutely dedicate yourself to using her, she will still not do much other units cannot accomplish. Besides her supports, she has nothing of value that cannot be replicated, unless your army is in dire need of her services for some reason (such as a massacre of your units).

As a positive point towards Karla, she joins with another Wo Dao, which can be useful for one aiming towards the Funds ranking.

Overall, Karla serves as an easter egg character at best, and a horrible unit at worst.

Fire Emblem Heroes

There are three different variations of Karla that have appeared in Heroes. The normal Karla is one of the characters that was added to the game in the The King's Demise update, and became available for summoning by players on June 8, 2018. A desert-themed variation of Karla was made available to summon between January 17, 2022 through February 17, 2022, with the Of Lost Kingdoms summoning event. A spring-themed variation of Karla was added in the Spring Eternal update, and was first available to be summoned on March 6, 2023.

Karla is naive, emotionally distant and cool-natured. Although Karla has mastered the art of swordplay, she generally does not like fighting and often finds peaceful methods of resolving conflict, such as fighting in arenas mostly in hopes of finding her brother, Karel. Still, due to not being influenced by the other tribes, leading to an ignorant outlook of the world, and even after Karla finds out the truth about what Karel did to their family, she strives to redeem him, or die trying.

Karla, Sword Vassal
After the conflict, Karla became involved with a warrior she met. She died of an illness several years later.

Karla and Bartre
Karla and Bartre were reunited in Ostia. During the battle, they became friends. That friendship deepened into love, and they were wed. Later, Karla died of illness. Bartre took their daughter to her uncle and joined Karla.

Karla is an unrivalled swordswoman. She's never been beaten at the arena, where she bewitched the crowds with her beauty while dazzling her foes with unmatched swordplay!	Karla dedicated herself to the sword so she could find her brother, Karel, the fearsome Sword Demon. She thought that by proving herself as a swordmaster, she might one day find a lead on her missing brother's whereabouts.	And so Karla has spent years focused solely on honing her technique, and I suppose she's a little naive to the ways of the world because of it. But it worked out for her, because she managed to find love on the battlefield in Bartre, a man who was once her challenger in the arena! Trivia

• Karla's paired ending with Bartre can be read to imply that Bartre committed suicide after Karla's death; however, Bartre appears alive in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade after her death. Bartre "joining" Karla is not said or implied in the Japanese version and is a translation error.^[3]
