Owain (Japanese: ウード Eudes), also known as Odin (Japanese: オーディン Odin), is a playable character in Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates. He is a prince of Ylisse and the son of Lissa, who allied with his cousin Lucina in her resistance against the fell dragon Grima. He travelled back in time along with Lucina and her allies to assist his uncle, Chrom, in preventing Grima's rise to power. Some time after this, he served the kingdom of Nohr as a retainer of its prince Leo during its war with Hoshido.
Biography
The future past
Owain originated in another timeline, where he was born to Lissa and an unidentified man at some point; unlike his mother, he developed the Brand of the Exalt on his upper arm, like Chrom's, and he would later recall that Lissa was overjoyed at this since the Brand never appeared on her.[1]
Over the course of a decade, this timeline's human race and the rest of the world fell to Grima and his hordes of Risen, and Owain allied with his cousin Lucina to fight back and protect the survivors of humanity; at some point, Owain's father died protecting him from an attack from a normal Risen when Owain had his guard down, which always haunted him.[2] At some point, he assisted his friends with a plan to try and restore the Fire Emblem in a bid to use its power against Grima, only to be unable to find the last of its gemstones at all.[3] As a last recourse, he and his friends conferred with Naga and had her enact a ritual to send them back in time to prevent Grima's rise to power in the first place. During their journey through time, however, Owain was separated from Lucina and her ten other companions.[4]
Serving Chrom
Owain arrived in the past alone and travelled around looking for his friends. He eventually started searching for Mystletainn, the ancient regalia blade from Jugdral, and came to the Sage's Hamlet on rumors that it was there. He attempted to confront a ruffian band led by Gecko which was hunting for a treasure hidden there as well, and fortunately was aided by the arrival of Chrom and his army, who assisted him in driving off the bandits. He introduced himself to Chrom and Lissa, and joined their party in order to reunite with Lucina and fulfill his mission. He fought with the Shepherds for the rest of the war with Valm and beyond, until Grima's defeat.
Travels to Nohr

Some time after the events of Awakening, Owain travelled to the land of Nohr alongside Inigo and Severa. The three took on new names and served under different members of the Nohrian royal family; Owain took on the name "Odin", and served under Prince Leo.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Odin is a Dark Mage that joins in Chapter 8 of Conquest, and in Chapter 17 of Revelation. He is a rather unconventional "jack of all trades" magic user with an unusual stat spread and balanced growth rates: he has decent, but not exceptional magic, which compounded by his below-average speed give him a less impressive damage output compared to other mages. To compensate, his high skill and luck give him reliable hit rates, and he has slightly above-average defenses. These factors turn Odin into more of an all-rounder than an archetypical glass cannon mage. This may make him seem like an overall mediocre unit; however, his access to certain skills from the Samurai class line can make him become very powerful.
His other personal traits are similarly eccentric. His personal skill, Aching Blood, requires a forged weapon in order to activate, but it works well with his high skill, giving him respectable crit rates. Odin makes a surprisingly good user of Nosferatu, and it will often be a straight upgrade to Thunder for him in the early game, as his traits will mitigate its intended downsides. Its inability to double is less of a penalty as Odin is typically not fast enough to double in the first place, his bulk allows him to take good advantage of its self-sustaining powers, and his high skill, luck, and Heartseeker will typically be enough to make up for Nosferatu's lower accuracy. Combined with proper use of tonics, this can allow him to choke points rather well. Later on, he will likely want to supplement this with tomes such as Mjölnir, which takes further advantage of his high crit potential. However, his critical chances will only go up to roughly 60%, which can be somewhat unreliable, but a decent low-cost build for Odin.
Both promotion options for him offer interesting choices that can boost either his utility or his raw power. Dark Knight further enhances his already solid bulk, and grants a sizable bonus to his above-average strength, though Odin will likely still prefer using tomes over swords anyways. Its higher mobility will also allow him to reach points more quickly, or ferry other units as well. Sorcerer aims to improve his raw offense, as its speed and magic boost give him a more reliable damage output. Its innate crit bonus stacks with his personal skill and high skill stat, allowing him to pull of crit builds as well. In addition, it can also continue to use Nosferatu, unlike Dark Knight. While promoting Odin to Dark Knight is a safe option, Sorcerer is a far better option if Odin is invested properly.
His access to the Samurai tree offers several unique options in regards to skills, such as Vantage and Life and Death. Swordmaster additionally maximizes his doubling ability and can perform similar high crit builds to Sorcerer, however it lacks its useful ranged capabilities, and is generally worse for Odin than his other options. As a Sorcerer, Odin can take advantage of powerful tomes like the Calamity Gate found in Ophelia's paralogue which allows him to take on Ninjas in the notorious Chapter 17.
In Conquest's early game, Odin's proficiency with Nosferatu can make him a helpful choke point holder, especially with a Wyvern Rider Elise pair-up to ferry him around and give stat boosts, allowing him to hold back the Oni Savages of Chapter 10 well. He can also perform well against Archers and Apothecaries thanks to his bulk and weapon triangle advantage; this gives him a niche in the Archer room in Chapter 11, as well as in holding back the reinforcements of Chapter 12. He can also be useful in Chapter 13, as his magic can deal significant damage to the large number of high-defense, low-resistance units in the chapter. These chapters can give him good amounts of experience, allowing him to get his promotion as early as Chapter 14. Odin's best build by far in the late-game is taking advantage of Vantage and Life and Death, allowing him to reach one-shot thresholds even on lunatic mode and sweep maps. His access to Adventurer via Niles can also allow him to swap that defense bonus for a speed bonus. Without much investment via experience and reclassing for skills, Odin's Nosferatu tanking will fall off due to the increase of enemy speed, which makes it more difficult for him to tank, as well as the greater presence of Ninjas and Master Ninjas, who are fast, have particularly high resistance, as well as weapon triangle advantage against tomes.
Revelation, sadly, is not kind to the dark hero. Though he is higher level, high enough to promote in fact, the stat boosts he receives in comparison to Conquest are not nearly enough to allow him to keep up with the high stats of Revelation's enemies—in fact, several enemies in his join chapter will outright ORKO him while he does pitiful damage in return. As a result, Odin will need immense favoritism and level grinding to become functional, let alone a good unit, on this route, and is most often not worth the time.
While Odin himself is only useful if properly invested in, it may be worth using him in the short-term or long-term as he is the father of Ophelia. Her general stat spread is much more akin to a traditional mage, with impressive offensive potential, while also having similar crit-stacking abilities to her father's. Her paralogue also offers several tomes, scrolls, and items that can be valuable to either her or other mages the player may field, such as Leo; two of these, Calamity Gate and Horse Spirit, cannot be acquired anywhere else in Conquest. Good support options for Odin include Elise and Nyx; both will boost his magic significantly, which improves both his attack power and his self-healing with Nosferatu, while also maximizing Ophelia's own speed and magic power. Elise is Ophelia's best mother since it maximizes her magic base magic growth, and magic cap, allowing her to reach one-shotting thresholds with Vantage and Life and Death her father may struggle to reach, allowing both to be some of your best units on the enemy phase. However, supporting her with Odin can either be very easy or very challenging. If Elise is reclassed to a wyvern rider, they can build their supports faster thanks to dual strikes, and possibly get their S-support by Chapter 15; otherwise, it might be time-consuming for troubadour Elise to get an S-support with Odin. Nyx offers less, passing along Outlaw, which is already available to Odin via Niles but can possibly be easier for Odin to support with. On Revelation, Orochi could be a slightly better pick with passing Diviner to both Odin and Ophelia, which the promotion to Onmyoji gives Tomefaire for a boost of five attack to tomes/scrolls, and she even passes a slightly higher magic growth to Ophelia at the cost of less to other stats, but is okay if the player wants to only invest in Ophelia's magic.

Fire Emblem Warriors
Role
Owain first appears during Chapter 2: Woodlands Encounter. He appears in the middle of the sparring match that Frederick devised to measure the trustworthiness of Rowan and Lianna. He protects Lissa from some of her opponents after theatrically jumping down a cliff to her aid. After this Owain accompanies Aytolis's forces, though only as an NPC unit.
Despite his presence in the base game, Owain only becomes a playable character if the Awakening downloadable content pack is purchased.

Personality
Owain is a hot-blooded youth with a passion for legendary heroes and, more importantly, their legendary weapons. He almost constantly speaks in a theatrical manner, concocting extensive narratives about himself as a chosen hero cursed with an uncontrollable sword hand which thirsts for the blood of his enemies. He is aware, however, that people find this behavior of his unusual and that his mother disapproves of doing so, which sometimes causes him to drop the act when talking to certain people.[5]
Owain has a particularly strong passion for weaponry and the mythology which comes to surround it. He loves naming weapons himself, claiming it to be a means of granting a soul to the instruments. In particular, he seeks the Mystletainn of Jugdral for his own use, and in his eagerness ended up mistaking a common generic sword for it. For all his obsession over the myths and names surrounding, Owain is actually highly competent at weapon maintenance, citing it as a personal hobby.[6][7]
His personality remains relatively the same in Fates, declaring himself to be the chosen protector of Leo. [8] Tying in with his new class as Dark Mage, Odin now declares himself as being cursed with aching blood.

Warriors | A hero from the world of Fire Emblem
Awakening. He's Lissa's son from the future and a bit of a show-off, but he's an earnest man at his core. His speech borders on the overdramatic at times, like he's acting in a one-man stage play for which nobody bought a ticket. He specializes in quick, powerful, and uniquely named sword techniques. His hidden power manifests as an aura of lightning that engulfs his legendary blade. |

Trivia
- As with the other children characters of Awakening, Owain's birthday matches the Japanese release date of a Fire Emblem series game: July 15th was the release date of Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem in 2010.
- In his conversations with other characters, Owain frequently makes reference to earlier games in the Fire Emblem series, both using their titles as war cries (e.g. "RADIANT...DAAAAAAWN") or by citing individual characters in exclamations (e.g. "by the ghost of Ike!" or "Shinon Strike").
- Of the three Awakening children characters who appear in the Fates storyline, Owain/Odin is the only one whose Fates initial class is different from his Awakening initial class.
- He is also the only one of the three whose Nohr-originated class in his Fates class set does not appear in his default Awakening class set.
- Owain's Myrmidon map sprite in Awakening is unique in that he is in his trademark pose, his hand being over his face. This pose is carried over in Heroes, when Owain activates a special skill in battle.
- In Fire Emblem 64, there was a character named "Owain". However, this is coincidental, as the Awakening Owain's Japanese name is Eudes.

- ↑ "Lissa: ...No, I mean, HOLY CROW, LOOK AT THAT THING ON YOUR ARM!
Owain: Oh, right! Sorry. Guess I should have shown you before. It's my Brand. The one carried by House Ylisse. So no more need to worry, eh?
Lissa: Th-then you know? That I don't...
Owain: That your Brand never surfaced? Yes, you told me as such. You said it always weighed on you... You should have seen how happy you were the day mine appeared! You were sobbing and laughing for an hour without pause!
Lissa: I was kind of hoping to grow out of the crying thing...
Owain: Yes, well. No more worrying. It was by chance alone your Brand never surfaced. We're all family, linked by blood. You really are Chrom's sister. My Brand proves our lineage." — Lissa and Owain, Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "Owain: Good. I don't know what I'd do if...if I got you killed again.
Frederick: Ah, so that's what this was about... I die protecting you in the future?
Owain: ...It was just a normal Risen, but somehow I didn't see it coming. You had no business dying when I was the one too stupid to watch his own back!
Frederick: At least it sounds like I died with no regrets.
Owain: So yes, that's why when I saw you took a hit for me, I...I lost control. All those feelings of guilt and shame returned. I just couldn't stand it.
Frederick: I'm sorry to have dredged up those painful memories, Owain. But more than that, I'm sorry I left you by yourself in the future..." — Owain and Frederick (all other father options for Owain have the same conversation), Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "In my future, one of the Gemstones had been lost forever. There was no way to perform the Awakening or restore Falchion's power." — Lucina, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "Naga, the divine dragon, feared mankind would face Grima again. In preparation for that day, she devised a ritual. It allows one to return to the past and alter events already written. I made the journey together with others, but...we became separated." — Lucina, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "Lucina: But... Why are you speaking so strangely today? That is, so strangely...normal. You're typically much more, er, colorful. Making up stories and yelling and the like. Are you feeling all right?
Owain: Y–yeah, I'm fine. It's just... You're a princess, Lucina. I figured it wasn't exactly appropriate for addressing royals. Plus, Mom would tan my hide if she ever found out.
Lucina: Lissa would object to you spinning yarns for royalty?
Owain: Not just royalty! Anybody! She gets really upset whenever I do it. Heh, actually, I suppose most everyone does. They think I'm a bit batty." — Lucina and Owain, Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "Aw, this is easy. I've even got the tools I need with me. I'll take care of it right now." — Owain, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "Eh, taking care of weapons is kind of a hobby of mine." — Owain, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "I am the keeper of darkness, chosen protector of the youngest Nohrian prince!" — Odin, Fire Emblem Fates
