...Consider your trust reciprocated then. That's the way of the Isaachian warrior. For now I consecrate my sword to thee.
— Ayra, to Sigurd

Ayra (Japanese: アイラ Ira) was a princess of Isaach, a descendant of the crusader Od, the daughter of King Mananan and the younger half-sister of Crown Prince Mariccle. At the height of Isaach's war with Grannvale, Ayra was tasked by Mariccle to flee Isaach with his young son Shannan, to ensure his survival and the future of the Isaach royal family. Their travels eventually took them to Verdane, where Ayra was eventually left with no choice but to work as a mercenary for Prince Cimbaeth, who imprisoned Shannan as leverage to ensure Ayra's full cooperation. With the death of Cimbaeth and the rescue of Shannan by Sigurd's forces, Ayra allied with Sigurd – if with reservations given the war between their countries – and spent the next few years serving in his forces until the Battle of Belhalla, in which she disappeared.

Biography

When Cimbaeth departed Castle Genoa to attempt to retake Castle Evans to the north, he placed Ayra in charge of Genoa's defense, with only a small defense force serving under her. Determined to ensure Shannan's safety from both Cimbaeth and the impending army led by Sigurd – her enemy, being of Grannvale – Ayra actively and relentlessly engaged Sigurd's forces in combat. Sigurd got around her and seized Genoa, then freed Shannan from his imprisonment and, with his freedom, convinced Ayra to stand down and ally with his army. Ayra agreed, for Shannan's benefit, but reminded Sigurd that her country was still at war with Grannvale, that as such he was still technically her enemy, and that should the need one day arise she would not hesitate to treat him as such.

During the war, if she married, Ayra gave birth to twin children: Larcei and Scáthach. Following the defeat of Lombard and Sigurd's capture of Castle Lubeck, the two were sent away along with the infant Seliph to the outskirts of Isaach, under the protection of Shannan and Oifey; though Sigurd wanted her to go with them, she stayed with his forces, telling him that she intends to finish the war and that Shannan can now look after himself.[2]

Ayra was present at the Battle of Belhalla, in which Sigurd's army was executed by the mages of Velthomer, but her ultimate fate in its aftermath—whereas other female members of Sigurd's army survived it, if temporarily—remains unknown, both in-universe and otherwise. Larcei, for her part, firmly believed that Ayra was still alive seventeen years later, and fiercely rebuked Scáthach for suggesting otherwise.[3]

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Role

Ayra appears as a Verdane affiliated enemy unit in Chapter 1, near Genoa castle. Once Genoa castle is seized, she can be recruited by being talked to by Sigurd. She is available up until the end of Chapter 5. If she is married and alive at the end of Chapter 5, Scáthach and Larcei will be available in the second generation. Otherwise, Dalvin and Creidne will replace them.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

As a unit

Ayra has strong combat at base. She has very high speed and skill, decent strength, and Follow-Up, allowing her to deal significant damage to—potentially one-rounding—many enemies; additionally, she has a very useful personal skill, Astra, which gives her a 16% chance (at base) to attack up to five times, greatly boosting her combat. Ayra has a strong chance to clear each arena she fights in thanks to her speed and Astra. Due to her high speed, her avoid is also decent. However, Ayra's combat outside the arena, though strong, is less impressive; while she will still out-speed and deal high damage to many enemies, Astra is less reliable as she has significantly fewer opportunities to activate it. Her low defense and HP limit her consistent use, and though her avoid can be boosted through terrain, that may not always be available, and the lance-users prevalent after Chapter 1 limit her avoid. Furthermore, Ayra lacks a mount, and thus cannot keep up with mounted units, limiting her contributions.

Ayra's best contributions are during the forest section of her joining chapter. As a foot unit, she will have better movement than any unpromoted mounted unit, and she can bait out Jamke without having to risk a critical hit.

Ayra has Nihil as a personal skill. Ayra does not greatly benefit from Nihil, as she never faces bonus damage, and enemies capable of dealing critical hits or bearing sword skills are rare.

Once Ayra promotes, she gets great stat buffs, allowing her to perform a little better on the battlefield. Even though she doesn't get extra movement on promotion, she can still pack a punch if she enters combat during the map. She also gains Adept on promotion. This will allow her to potentially attack more times than usual, potentially killing enemies she otherwise wouldn't be capable of, and helping her clear a path for Sigurd and others to advance.

Ayra can benefit from the Leg Ring and the Knight Ring to improve her mobility and allow her to match that of mounted units; however, these items are highly competitive—Silvia especially may utilize both items better, as increasing her mobility can increase the contributions of any unit, including Ayra. Ayra may also benefit from the Shield Ring—a less competitive item than the Leg or Knight Rings—to improve her defense. She also gains the Brave Sword through an event during Chapter 3, but it is better given to a mounted unit who can gain more kills on it.

As a mother

If Ayra is alive and married at the end of Chapter 5, she will have two children: Larcei and Scáthach. Both are Sword Fighters who will inherit Astra and Nihil from Ayra; Larcei will inherit Ayra's items, while Scáthach will inherit his father's. Ayra's most notable pairings are with Lex, Chulainn, and Naoise. Lex provides Vantage and Paragon to her children as well as significantly improved bulk. However, Lex is a strong husband for several other women, and may be wanted for children who have a harder time clearing the Arena. Naoise grants Ayra's children additional combat skills (Critical and Accost), making them more powerful. Both of these husbands have much better movement than Ayra, meaning it can be difficult to pair them quickly without limiting their usefulness. Chulainn, another strong father, does not have this issue, as he and Ayra are both infantry. Chulainn grants the children high skill, increasing their skill activation rates, and Luna. Furthermore, this pairing allows Ayra's children to obtain and use Balmung through a glitch, but this has limited practicality as all three units who can wield it have the same movement. Both Naoise and Chulainn can use swords, thus allowing them to purchase swords to pass to Scáthach, which Lex cannot; however, both Naoise and Chulainn provide chance-based skills that—even with Chulainn's increased skill—are not considerably reliable, whereas Lex's Vantage and Paragon are consistent. Ayra can receive the Brave Sword in Chapter 3 by talking to either Lex or Chulainn if she does not have a lover, providing love points between the chosen pair; this event can pose a problem if Ayra is intended to be paired with someone else, as it increases the competition between Ayra's intended husband and Lex or Chulainn while creating an opportunity cost if she is paired too soon.

Fire Emblem Awakening

"I am Ayra. I'm a swordfighter from Isaach."

Ayra is playable as a SpotPass bonus character, released in the Genealogy of the Holy War first-generation character set. Along with Innes of The Sacred Stones and Clair of Gaiden, Ayra was one of the first three characters to be revealed to a "returning character" on March 14th, 2012, in a video released by Nintendo on the Wii's Nintendo Channel service which they later also placed on the official Japanese website for Awakening. This video confirmed the game's use of SpotPass functionality to deliver bonus playable characters returning from earlier games in the Fire Emblem series.[4]

Ayra also appears as an enemy unit in two DLC episodes – Lost Bloodlines 1 and 3 – and as a NPC in Lost Bloodlines 2.

Ayra is a princess of Isaach and a descendant of the crusader Od. She's also the only surviving master of Od's style of swordsmanship! When Isaach was on the verge of destruction, Ayra's older brother entrusted her with the safety of his son, Shannan, and had them flee the country. From then on, Ayra fought to protect Shannan. They say that the flash of her sword was like a shooting star… I guess they must have seen her using Astra! Sigurd: I don't believe this... If you're not going, how are you supposed to protect Shannan?
Ayra: Ah, of course. My pledge to my late brother... Shannan has grown into a strong young man, capable of leading his own life. My work is done. He no longer needs my protection.
    Sigurd: But-
Ayra: Once I've seen this war through, I'll return to his side in Isaach. Until then, Sigurd, I won't run away. For better or worse, I'm with you.
" — Sigurd and Ayra in Chapter 5, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  3. "Scáthach: It was Oifey who took us with him when he fled to Isaach with Seliph. We waited and waited, but Mom never followed... I guess she didn't make it out of the Battle of Belhalla alive...
Larcei: Scáthach! You swore you'd never say awful things like that! Mom is alive! ALIVE! I'm sure of it! Don't you dare say otherwise ever again!
" — Scáthach and Larcei in Chapter 6, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
