Appearance(s)

I'm not a princess to be coddled and kept safe behind the vanguard, Elincia. I am a knight of Crimea, and I will be one until I die. As long as I live, as long as I am able to walk, and as long as I draw breath, I shall fight. It is my duty.
— Renning

Renning (Japanese: レニング Lening) is the brother of the late Crimean king Ramon, uncle of the Crimean queen Elincia, and a playable character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

During the Mad King's War, Renning was captured by Daein and given the same drug as the Feral Ones. Under the identity of Bertram (Japanese: ベウフォレス Beuforres), he served as one of the Four Riders of Daein.

Biography

Renning was the crown prince of Crimea. He was defeated in the Daein invasion of Crimea and presumed dead; however, Renning survived, and was given the drug used to create Feral Ones, which broke his mind but increased his strength.[1] He became a general of Daein under the name Bertram. He was stationed to guard Fort Pinell, but was defeated by the Crimean army under the leadership of General Ike.

After Bertram was defeated, Bastian secretly took him into his castle, but was unable to cure Renning. He hired Volke, who discovered Izuka was behind Renning's current condition, and kidnapped him; Izuka offered to create an antidote in exchange for his freedom, but Bastian refused, as he did not want to allow Izuka to roam free, and because the galdr of rebirth was a more reliable method.[2] Reyson sang the galdr of rebirth, which he was able to do because of Ashera's awakening,[3] and this cured Renning. Afterwards, Renning took up his sword, armor, and steed once more, and joined Ike's forces for the final assault against Ashera.

Today, I'll be introducing you to Bertram! He's a member of the Four Riders, a group made up of the strongest generals in Daein's army! Despite his prestigious rank, Bertram is a man of mystery, and no one has seen what he looks like under the mask. I've even heard spooky rumors that he's actually an animated suit of armor controlled by a vengeful ghost, or that he's a monster from another world! One thing's for sure, though: when he shows up on the battlefield, he means business! He'll keep swinging without a shred of hesitation until all his foes have been felled. You could almost say he goes completely feral… Bertram doesn't show a shred of emotion, but apparently there was one time when he reacted in rather a strange way to Princess Elincia. I wonder what kind of connection they have? If anyone has any juicy details to share, you know who to come to!

Like Bertram, he is one of Daein's Four Riders. An enigmatic knight encased in pitch-black armor. Like Bertram, she is one of Daein's Four Riders. Wields the Flame Lance with a callous disdain for those around her. The princess of Crimea, whose existence was concealed. Cares for her kingdom and people. An encounter with her on the battlefield provoked a strange reaction from the normally emotionless Bertram. {{{Related_blurb4}}} {{{Related_blurb5}}}

  1. "Duke Renning was apparently killed three years ago... But as you can see, he is still alive. Duke Renning was one of the strongest warriors in Crimea, and while Daein tried to kill him, he survived. When the Mad King heard of his skill, he had Renning kidnapped and gave him the drug that creates Feral Ones. This drug made Duke Renning even stronger, but shattered his mind. He became Bertram, one of Ashnard's infamous Four Riders." — Bastian, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  2. "Bastian: After Her Majesty and company defeated him, I had him taken back to my castle. I hoped to find a cure, but I didn't want to raise false hope, Your Majesty, so I kept the secret. However, his mind continued to deteriorate, and there were no signs of improvement. As a last resort, I hired Volke to investigate a way to cure him. Volke quickly discovered that Duke Renning's transformation was engineered by a man called Izuka. This man had made himself an aide to the new king of Daein and was not difficult to locate. Feeling that Renning was running out of time, we kidnapped Izuka to learn more of the condition. Returning to Fayre Castle, we interrogated Izuka at length and discovered more about his experiments. Perhaps unsurprisingly, beorc are affected differently by the drug than laguz. Izuka then offered to create an antidote in exchange for his freedom.
    Geoffrey: Did you agree to it?!
    Bastian: We refused without a second thought. Such a monster cannot be allowed to roam free. Besides, we know a more certain way to cure Lord Renning.
    Lucia: The galdr of rebirth!
    " — Bastian, Geoffrey, and Lucia, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  3. "Tibarn: Are you sure about this? I thought the galdr of rebirth was too powerful and complex for a single heron to perform.
    Reyson: Usually, that's true. Right now, however, Ashera's awakening has infused the world with order; I've never felt stronger. What's more, Lord Renning's condition seems less severe than a true Feral One. I think I can do this.
