Ashe Ubert (pronounced /æʃ/[key]; Japanese: アッシュ=デュラン Ashe Durand) is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a student at the Officers Academy and a member of the Blue Lions.
Biography
Ashe is the adoptive son of Lord Lonato of Gaspard. When his parents perished, Ashe turned into a life of thievery in order to sustain himself and his siblings, and it was during one of his heists he was discovered by Lonato, who chose to adopt him alongside his brother and sister on the spot as an act of kindness. He enrolls into Garreg Mach Monastery in 1180, joining the Blue Lions House, whom he studies and fights with. Lonato does not inform him of his plans to rebel against the Church of Seiros, and is eventually struck down during his time in the monastery, possibly by the Blue Lions and himself should Byleth be their teacher, leaving Ashe heartbroken.
After the timeskip, on the Azure Moon route and if recruited on the Crimson Flower route, he returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies Byleth throughout the war. On the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes, Ashe joins House Rowe after they pledge loyalty to the Adrestian Empire and become part of the Faerghus Dukedom, as a way to avenge Lonato's death at the hands of the Church. As a result, Ashe and the House Rowe soldiers eventually ambush Byleth and their chosen faction in Ailell as they are waiting for Judith's reinforcements. If he was recruited to Byleth's class during Part I, he can be spared and convinced to defect to the Resistance/Alliance forces. If not recruited on the Crimson Flower route, Ashe joins forces with the Church of Seiros to fight against the Black Eagle Strike Force in a burning Fhirdiad, as a last attempt to defeat the invading army once and for all. As an enemy on all routes, he can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Role
Ashe is a starting playable character for the Blue Lions route and Cindered Shadows, a recruitable unit on the Black Eagles and Golden Deer routes and a recurring enemy should he not be recruited during Part I. On the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes, he will always desert your party after Chapter 12. Should he have been recruited in Part I, he can be re-recruited in Chapter 15 after defeating him in combat with any ally and choosing the 'Persuade' option.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
At first glance, Ashe appears to be a unit that is at worst on par with the other Blue Lions, however, as the game progresses, Ashe proves to be relatively unimpressive in that he has little to distinguish him from his classmates, unimpressive base stats as well as unideal growths, subpar combat arts, as well as in being overshadowed by several easy recruits into the Blue Lions. Initially, Ashe has the benefit of having Curved Shot at base, making him useful for Chapter 1, especially on maddening mode; however, essentially every other member of the Blue Lions can get Curved Shot by the next chapter meaning the others quickly encroach on his niche. Once the other Blue Lions get Curved Shot, Ashe struggles to stand out since he lacks an impressive combat art, something especially troublesome for Ashe when comparing him to potential recruits from other houses. Shatter Slash is potentially helpful in the early game when debuff options are limited, but ultimately proves to be an inferior version of Break Shot in being locked to melee range. Deadeye has amazing range but is laughably inaccurate at max range, essentially invalidating its main perk, not to mention that bow-specializing classes already have skills which increase bow-range. Last of all, while Waning Shot has utility in lowering an enemy's Strength by five and their AS by one it is only helpful in setting up kills for other units and is overshadowed by defensive gambits later in the game such as Sacred Shield, Impregnable Wall, and Blessing. None of Ashe's combat arts beyond the generic Tempest Lance help him secure a kill, a weakness only compounded by growth rates that favor dexterity and speed over strength, HP, and defense which make him unideal for the frontlines. Additionally, Ashe's charm is also low, and he is saddled with the 2nd-worst cap in the game at 36; enemies will not only consistently out-scale his charm and thus cripple his Gambit accuracy, unlike most other low-charm units, his cap is actually so low that even when maxed, he will struggle to Gambit generic enemies with battalions with charm stats in the 40s. Overall, Ashe's biggest downfall is being average in a game full of amazing, busted units and consequently being outclassed in every possible role he could fulfill. Nearly every other unit in the Blue Lions is much more worth serious investment having unique support utility, better stats at base, and just simply being better at combat. Not to mention that many easy recruits for the Blue Lions are far better than Ashe at many of his main roles; Leonie has Break Shot and Point-Blank Volley, Ignatz has Break Shot and inherent Hit +20, Shamir has base access to Sniper for early Hunter's Volley, and Cyril has Point-Blank Volley, Vengeance, and better growths. Due to a sheer lack of combat prowess and unique support utility, Ashe is best off supporting allies through use of support gambits such as Stride, Retribution, and Dance of the Goddess; becoming a Brawler to become a guard adjutant for a unit better at combat; or opening chests with his personal skill of Lockpick.
Ashe's best class path depends on whether you want him to be a serious combat unit or a purely support-oriented gambit-spamming bot. If you want Ashe to contribute in terms of combat, follow the path of Fighter, Brigand, then, after mastering the class for Death Blow, you can make Ashe a Sniper so he gets Hunter's Volley or proceed to Wyvern Rider then Wyvern Lord to raise his general combat prowess outside of spamming one good combat art. The Sniper build in particular makes him an acceptable low-maintenance kill-bot for Chapter 13, at which point he can be retired for better units. If you only plan to make Ashe a gambit-bot, aim for Paladin so he can use Canto to keep up after using a gambit or reposition himself after using Lockpick and so he has access to all battalions in the game. Alternatively you can make Ashe a Brawler to use him as a guard adjutant for the rest of the game.
Out-of House Performance
Ashe is an unideal recruitment for the Golden Deer as he is simply worse than many of the units in house already. As mentioned above, Ignatz and Leonie both get Break Shot, which is objectively better than Shatter Slash in having 2-3 range, not to mention that Ignatz has inherent Hit +20 and Leonie also gets Point-Blank Volley, one of the best combat arts in the game. Moreover, Claude does everything Ashe does but better by virtue of having a Crest, better base stats, and better combat arts in Encloser, Fallen Star, and Wind God. When it comes to the Black Eagles though, Ashe is actually a desirable recruitment in that he's the only recruitable character that unlocks a paralogue that gives Shoes of the Wind, the only stat boosting item that permanently increases a unit's movement outside of DLC items, as a reward for clearing it. However, in Golden Deer, Catherine is far more ideal for recruitment for unlocking the paralogue in being easier to recruit, simply better in every way, and in coming with Thunderbrand, a brave weapon accessible as early as seven chapters before brave weapons are even available to purchase in the shop.

Endings
Ashe, Arrow of Justice (single ending)
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. His warm, sincere attitude toward his subjects was praised all over Fódlan, and Ashe was finally recognized as the ideal knight he'd always hoped to be. His deeds live on in countless tales.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Ashe, Arrow of Justice (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
When Byleth ascended the throne of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Ashe served the new leader faithfully—first as a knight aide, and later as a husband. The queen, with help from the Church of Seiros, put much toward the rebuilding effort with particular attention paid to relief for orphans in the form of food, beds, and even schooling. It is said that these compassionate deeds were all Ashe's suggestions, but the modest knight always gave the credit to his beloved wife.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Ashe, Arrow of Justice (Azure Moon)
When Byleth became the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Ashe served her faithfully—first as a knight and aide, and later as a husband. With help from Faerghus, the archbishop put much toward the rebuilding effort with particular attention paid to relief for orphans in the form of food, beds, and even schooling. It is said that these compassionate deeds were all Ashe's suggestions, bet the modest knight always gave the credit to his beloved wife.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Ashe, Arrow of Justice (Crimson Flower)
Byleth and Ashe, after seeing the war through to its end, continued the fight against those who slither in the dark. Supporting one another through that long, hard fight grew their love until they became totally inseparable. When the fight was finally done, they departed together on a journey to heal the world, one person at a time. No records exist of their journey, but the legend of this loving and charitable couple lives on in folktales.
Caspar, Roaming Instigator & Ashe, Arrow of Justice
After the war, Caspar and Ashe embarked on a carefree journey around the world. They traveled to every corner of Fódlan, and even ventured abroad now and again, with the sole purpose of punishing those who preyed upon the helpless. Though Caspar seemed to get into trouble at every turn, Ashe was always there to get him out of it, and Caspar's bravery and strength returned the favor more than once. Though opposites in many ways, they shared the same view of justice, and their abilities complemented one another nicely. The stories of their adventures lived on as exciting and amusing folktales.
Petra, Queen of Brigid & Ashe, Arrow of Justice
Petra took Ashe with her to her homeland of Brigid, where she inherited the throne from her grandfather. With Ashe's guidance, she established an order of knights, and used that order to declare independence from Fódlan and renegotiate diplomatic ties on more equal terms. Over years of work reforming diplomatic and military policy together, Petra and Ashe fell in love and eventually were married. The people of Brigid warmly embraced the union. It is said that the name of the knightly order, the Blue Sun, was born of their mutual love of swimming in the sea.
Dedue, Taciturn Devotee & Ashe, Arrow of Justice
Though the innocence of the Duscur people was proven, prejudice against them still lingered in the Kingdom capital. For this reason, Ashe refused a knighthood when it was offered to him, and chose instead to open an inn that specialized in Duscur cuisine. Dedue began to frequent the place on breaks from his duty as the king's vassal, and over time, imparted to Ashe his culinary wisdom. As the inn gained popularity, the people of the Kingdom began finally to see the Duscur people in a positive light. This led to a reconciliation between the two cultures that came rather more quickly than expected.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing. Though he was famously tenacious and never lost heart, it was perhaps only due to the constant counsel of his wife, Mercedes, that he managed to overcome all obstacles. When not busy governing their territory, the couple lifted one another's spirits by baking delicious sweets for each other. The tradition was so heartwarming that it became popular for husbands and wives in that region to do the same for generations.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. He married Annette, and the couple's combined tenacity, intelligence, and courage proved more than a match for the many difficulties they faced in governing. Together they helped Gaspard territory flourish more than it ever had before. From his lowly origins as an orphan, Ashe grew to become a splendid knight, much beloved by his people. After he passed, his story was immortalized in a book that was authored by his beloved wife.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind, Crimson Flower)
When Galatea territory was seized, Ingrid argued strongly for the preservation of its borders. Her request was granted and she was appointed to rule, but because she had previously abandoned her noble house, she was not well accepted by the people at first. It was thanks to the help of Ashe, who arrived to serve House Galatea, that she was able to soften the view the people had toward her by restoring the territory and improving its agriculture. As Galatea's prosperity grew, so too did the love between Ingrid and Ashe. Their wedding ceremony was intended to be a simple one, but lavish blessings from the citizenry made it a lively event.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight (Azure Moon)
When the new king was crowned in Faerghus, both Ashe and Ingrid left their homes to travel to Fhirdiad and pledge themselves to the royal family as knights. They each swore to defend the king, come what may, no matter the cost, and to that end they fought side by side in many battles together. They were both praised for their endless devotion and boundless courage, and their names went down in history as peerless knights. Many tales were told of their valor, and how they became indispensable to each other over the years. A handful of those stories went so far as to suggest that they fell in love and became husband and wife, but this may have been an embellishment.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted, and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing, until his court was blessed with a new adviser in Marianne. Using skills imparted to her by her adoptive father, Marianne helped Ashe to solidify his position. As the prosperity of Gaspard territory grew, so did a love between them, and soon Margrave Edmund saw fit to bless the couple's happy marriage. Years later, Ashe asked Marianne what made her choose to help him in the first place. She simply smiled and said that she decided to make supporting him her dream.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
When Rhea resigned her position of archbishop and left the Church of Seiros, Catherine followed, and the pair began a life of seclusion in the Red Canyon. Years later, they began to hear rumors of a wise young man who had been knighted and appointed lord of House Gaspard. Soon they were approached by that lord, Ashe, who came to the Red Canyon to kneel before Catherine and ask her to be his wife. With Rhea's encouragement, Catherine was persuaded to accept. She left the Red Canyon with him, and the two began their journey together.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. He asked Catherine, who had left the Knights of Seiros, to marry him, but she declined, convinced that the people of Gaspard territory would never accept it. Refusing to set his love for Catherine aside, Ashe worked diligently along with the Church of Seiros to expose the full truth of the Western Church's plot. With great persistence, he convinced the people of this truth, and then persuaded Catherine finally to reconsider. The people received her reluctantly at first, but over time, they recognized her virtue and came to accept her.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Cyril, Limitless Potential
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing, until his court was blessed with a new adviser in Cyril. Using skills he learned during his time as a student at the Officers Academy, Cyril offered Ashe the advice he needed to grow into a worthy lord. Over time, Ashe gained the respect of his people, and Gaspard territory prospered. The pair swore always to be there to help one another, and remained best friends for the whole of their lives.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Hapi, Freed Spirit
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. He soon married Hapi, whose competence lent much reliability to the governance of their territory. The ruling couple developed a frank and earnest relationship with their people, and the territory prospered. They were also blessed with many children, and their home was always so busy and full of merriment that there was never an occasion to sigh. It is said that Hapi took such delight in recounting Ashe's stories to their children that it became hard to believe she had ever despised knights.

Trivia
- Ashe has a personalized class sprite in the game's files depicting him in the Bow Knight class, which would have been used during Part II; it is left unused for unknown reasons.
- As an enemy, Ashe has access to the Seal Movement and Defiant Avoid abilities, which he cannot obtain as a playable unit. The latter in particular is obtained after mastering the Falcon Knight class, which is gender-locked to female units.
- Ashe is the only student to be fought in an Intermediate Class in Part II.
- On the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes, Ashe is tied with Byleth for changing factions the most times in Three Houses, with 3. He is part of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus in Part I, switches to the Old Faerghus Territories as an enemy in Chapter 15, and finally switches to the Resistance Army/Leicester Alliance after rejoining the player in Part II.
- Ashe's S support illustration depicted the decoration on his sleeves in an incorrect position in the initial release of Three Houses; this was fixed in version 1.0.2.
