Caeda
| ||||||||||||||
|
“ | How the princess has grown, though! Sharp as a tack, that one. Such a change from when she was—...Now what am I saying? Caeda has always been clever. Even as a wee girl she knew how to wrap her elders about her little finger. | ” | — Lorenz to Marth, on Caeda |
---|
Caeda (pronounced /ˈsidə/[key];[1] Japanese: シーダ Sheeda) is the princess of Talys, daughter of its first king Mostyn. She befriended Marth of Altea during his two-year exile to Talys in the War of Shadows, calling upon him when the Galder pirates launch an assault on the nation, and subsequently joining his forces when he departs to raise an army against the Dolhr oppression. After the war, she and Marth become engaged, and she moves to Altea to live with him and assist in the restoration of the nation. When the army of Archanea comes to conquer Altea, Marth's sister Elice convinces Caeda to flee in order to find and alert Marth as to Altea's fate, and assists him throughout the rest of the War of Heroes.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Caeda was the princess of the Talys while Marth was in exile there. She fled from Talys Castle and informed Marth that pirates had taken over the castle and were holding her father King Mostyn captive. She fought alongside Marth and his Altean knights to retake the castle. After they retook the castle and saved the king, she accompanied him for the rest of the War of Shadows. After the war, she agreed to return to Altea with Marth.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Caeda joins at the start of Chapter 1 and never leaves the army. Her strength base and growth are very low, but her speed base and growth are very high, which allows Caeda to double enemies throughout the game. Her base weapon level is high enough to wield Jagen's Silver Lance, which mitigates her low strength. Caeda has a unique niche as the only flier in the early chapters, since she can move across terrain unimpeded and granting her greater flexibility than any other unit in the early-game.
Caeda has relatively poor durability, and bows will likely one-shot her, as they are effective against her; however, her base defense is decent at 7, and she can survive a hit from most other enemies. Her promotion to Dracoknight improves her durability; while she remains weak to arrows, her defense increases to 14, her HP to 22, and her movement increases by 2. Additionally, her promotion raises her strength to 9 from the base 3. A promotion to Dracoknight greatly strengthens Caeda, but the earliest Skydrake Whip is available in Chapter 19, fairly late into the game.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Caeda is among the strongest units in Shadow Dragon. She joins in Chapter 1 with a remarkable base Speed stat that allows her to double attack most standard enemies. As a flying unit, she also stands out for her ability to cross over water and mountain peaks that your other units cannot. Her low base Strength and growth will leave her weighed down by most lances, but her 85% Speed growth will soon allow her to double attack even with heavier weapons, such as Steel Lances and Javelins. She is notable as one of the only units that will consistently double attack even on the hardest difficulty levels.
Caeda's promotion to Dracoknight is a huge improvement, giving her enormous boosts to her main statistical weaknesses, Strength and Defense, plus 2 extra Movement, in exchange for a negligible loss in Resistance. Caeda is also a good candidate for the Seraph Robe in Chapter 6 to allow her to survive an extra hit, and is very helpful alongside her promoted Defense stat. Promoting Caeda before Chapter 11 is recommended, because with the extra Movement, she can safely recruit Jake. Otherwise, the player must expend a Warp staff use to perform the recruitment.
The biggest contributor to Caeda's success is her exclusive Wing Spear, a lightweight but powerful lance that deals bonus damage to cavaliers, paladins, knights, generals, and horsemen. These unit types make up a majority of the bosses in Shadow Dragon, making Caeda one of the best boss killers available. The Wing Spear can be forged with extra Mt to improve her damage output even further, to the point where she can kill cavaliers and knights in a single hit (saving Wing Spear uses), and even the most durable generals will not survive a round of combat against her. Extra Wing Spears can be found in Chapters 8, 16, 17x, and 22, so there is no need to be extra-stingy when using it.
Depending on how you see it, Caeda also has utility outside of combat as a unit responsible for the most recruitments in the game after Marth. Without Caeda, it is impossible to recruit several characters.
Caeda may struggle in the early chapters due to her low durability, the plethora of axe-wielding enemies, and the lack of enemy types that the Wing Spear is effective against. Caeda's flaws are worth putting up with; once she is able to take advantage of her strong points, she will prove to be a unit with near-unmatched versatility on any difficulty level.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Caeda is among the strongest characters in the Prologue, being able to double almost every enemy in it, while also providing useful flying utility. Her durability is subpar, but most units in the early game share this flaw.
Caeda rejoins the army at the start of Chapter 5, when her flying utility is no longer exclusive. Caeda's speed is still high compared to enemies, allowing her to double most enemies, however her low strength limits the damage she can do. Her personal weapon, the Wing Spear, has decently high might and is effective against a number of strong enemies, which improves her damage output.
Caeda has the option to promote into Dracoknight with a Master Seal or Falcoknight with an Elysian Whip. Dracoknight gives Caeda access to axes, which can help mitigate her low strength, and grants her more physical durability. However, Falcon Knight gives Caeda a higher speed cap of 26, which she will most likely meet; with the Starsphere, Caeda can double most enemies in the game as a Falcoknight, which she cannot with Dracoknight's speed cap of 23. In addition, Falcon Knight's higher resistance is useful against strong magic-based enemies. Caeda alternately performs well as an Archer or Myrmidon, thanks to her high speed, but will need to use forged weapons to mitigate her poor strength; Caeda can also contribute as a Paladin in chapters with multiple counters to fliers.

Fire Emblem Warriors
Role
During the main story Caeda, with Marth, Tiki, and Navarre, abruptly appears during the ending of Chapter 14 to assist Rowan and Lianna in retreating from the area. Caeda's companions receive the shortest amount of spotlight before joining, having virtually none, compared to the other recruited characters from Awakening and Fates. It is unclear how she and her companions were informed that the twins needed rescue and neither the main story or her supports with any characters appear to ever elaborate on it.
Caeda accompanies Aytolis's forces for the rest of the story and aids in the defeat of Velezark. Upon Velezark's defeat the portals to other worlds begin closing and Caeda, along with all the other heroes, are forcibly returned to their home worlds.

Personality
Caeda comes across as jovial and friendly, but can be serious and decisive if the situation demands it. In New Mystery of the Emblem, both sides of Caeda are shown during the training session in the Prologue. She asks the recruits to approach and fight her without fear, despite their hesitation, but she also has some fun while training, displaying her more childish and relaxed side.[2][3] She treats the recruits as friends and companions, instead of establishing a clear hierarchy, showing that she tends to befriend people instead of trying to command them.[4]
Caeda is protective of her homeland and the people she cares about, as shown in Chapter 1, when she requests Marth to aid Talys in Gazzak's pirate attack.[5] This includes the people of Talys, as well as the individuals she knows personally. Even though Ogma refuses to accept her help when he is wounded in battle, Caeda insists on helping him.[6] She is also caring and ready to help people in need, as shown in Castor's recruitment in Chapter 2 of Shadow Dragon, where she offers him gold to buy medicine for his sick mother.[7] Other people consider her kind and beautiful, which gives her a good reputation.[8] Marth himself falls in love with her because of her beauty and courage, as he admits in the epilogue of Shadow Dragon.[9]
However, Caeda also has manipulative tendencies. While she is definitely loyal to Marth, she uses her skills in persuasion to sway enemies to join Marth's side. This is most visible in Roger's recruitment, where she asks him if he believes in love, luring him into switching loyalties.[10] Shades of this behavior are present in all the recruitment conversations she is responsible for. There is a reason she recruits the largest number of characters after Marth. She is charming, persuasive, and easily wins over people's hearts. With Roger, she is so successful that he falls in love with her at first sight, as admitted by the man himself during his later conversation with Marth.[11] That said, despite her success with charming people, she does not want them to risk life and limb for her. When Elice gives herself up to allow Caeda to warn Marth about the imperial army's attack on Altea, Caeda feels very guilty about leaving Marth's sister behind, and Marth has to comfort her.[12]
Caeda is brave and does not hesitate to risk her life, whether in battle or during recruitment conversations when she meets the enemy directly. In her recruitment conversation with Navarre, she requests him to turn his sword against her if he will not join Marth's cause, which is an example of her manipulative behavior, but also shows her courage.[13] She is ready and willing to take risks for the army, and wants to help Marth as much as possible by removing enemies from his way.
That said, despite her courage, Caeda still feels weak and needs protection from others. She is insecure about her strength and seeks to find it in other people, so that she may learn how to be strong. She reveals this insecurity in Heroes.[14] In Heroes, Caeda also admits that she grew close to Marth because he made her feel safe, and that her urge to support him was a selfish wish.[15] Yet, despite Caeda's need for protection, she wants to protect others, too. She would feel too guilty otherwise. This sentiment is expressed in her base conversation with Ogma in New Mystery.[16]
Caeda truly believes in Marth's cause and will do much to support him. If she dies in battle, her last words are about Prince Marth, and she requests him to stay strong before she expires.[17] Her protective attitude toward Marth is especially visible in New Mystery of the Emblem. She is insecure about her ability to protect Marth from danger, and in the final section of the prologue of New Mystery, she requests Kris to do it in her stead while she is absent.[18]
In many ways, Caeda is still similar to the way she was as a child. According to Lorenz, she was manipulative and charming even as a child, and used it to good effect.[19] However, in comparison to when she was a child, she does not get into as much trouble anymore.[20] In her base conversation with Kris in New Mystery, she reveals that she used to be a tomboy.[21] She is also surprisingly good at cooking.[22]
Caeda has grown to be intelligent and politically savvy, which especially shows in her recruitment conversation with Lorenz. Her father was a large influence in teaching her and inspired her outlook on things like kingship.[23] This helps her find the right arguments to recruit Lorenz to Marth's cause.[24]
As the queen of Archanea, Caeda wishes to prevent war and guarantee harmony for everyone.[25] She believes competition breeds unnecessary conflict,[26] and she would prefer people to treat each other with love and respect.[27] Caeda believes her role as queen is to bring others hope and comfort, so long as her people trust her.[28] While Caeda is still getting used to her new role, she understands how Marth must have felt and intends to do her best to succeed.[29][30]

Caeda plays a prominent role in the Fire Emblem anime adaptation, here referred to as Sheda. Much of the first episode is devoted to her relationship with Marth during his days in exile on Talys, and her efforts to try to get him to relax and stop worrying about the duties he will eventually assume as Falchion's heir. When Marth seems to show interest in other girls, even by accident, Caeda is prone to fits of jealousy.
During the fight against the Galder pirates, she attempts to stop Gazzak from hurting her father, but is captured, forcing Marth to surrender; she is saved by the timely arrival of Ogma and his group. Later, she breaks up the fight between Ogma and Navarre, convincing the latter to stand down and ally with Marth.

English |
• Caeda |
• Used in the NTSC release of Shadow Dragon. Possibly derived from caedum, a conjugated form of caedō, meaning "I strike", "I defeat", or "I murder". Could also be derived from the latin word caelum, meaning "sky" or "heaven", which could related to the fact she is a flying unit. |
English (Europe) |
• Shiida |
• Used in Shadow Dragon and Awakening. Straight romanization of the Japanese name. Chosen so the PAL release of Shadow Dragon maintains consistency with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, something the NTSC localization team decided against from the beginning.[31] |

シーダ |
Officially Romanized as Sheeda. May be derived from the Persian name Sheida, meaning "infatuation". |

- ↑ "Fear won't help you; approach with confidence and the intent to fight." — Caeda to recruits whenever they attack her, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "You're a mercenary, aren't you...? Tee hee. This looks promising. Come, show me what you can do with your sword!
An armored knight... I'll be at a disadvantage with the way that I fight. But I won't lose so easily! Come, show me what you've got!
Kris, you're an archer!? The bane of us pegasus knights... B-but I will not sit idly by and lose to you! Show me everything you have!" — Some of Caeda's lines toward Kris when attacked by them, depending on Kris's class, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "Caeda: That was a thrilling fight. You are the first squires to have bested me in combat. Promise me that you'll become knights worthy of helping Marth.
Kris: Of course, Princess Caeda.
Caeda: If you ever need help during the practical training, do call on me. And I'll fight, but as your companion." — Caeda and Kris, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "Marth, come quickly! It's the castle... Galder's pirates attacked from out of nowhere. They stormed the gates and cut down everyone in their path! I fear for my father's life..." — Caeda to Marth, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "Ogma: Please raise your head. My life is yours. You needn't concern yourself with my wounds.
Caeda: Ogma...
Ogma: Please give that vulnerary to Marth. I have no need for it.
Caeda: No! I had this vulnerary concocted especially for you. I want you to use it!
Ogma: ...Very well. Then, I shall gladly accept it." — Caeda and Ogma, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "So you agreed to fight for the pirates in exchange for coin... All right then. If it's gold you need, take mine. Here, this is all I have. Take it, and go to your mother's side." — Caeda to Castor, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "Castor: Prince Marth, I am Castor of Talys. I wish to add my bow to your strength.
Marth: Of course. Caeda told me about you.
Castor: You know, she's always been very kind to me, sire, even before I left Talys. And look how I've repaid her...
Marth: Castor, you can still show her your heart is true. Let the battles to come be what defines you!" — Marth and Castor, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "As you said, we have not spoken much since Talys. With you, I felt I never had to say a word. If the battle started to take its toll, you were always there... close by... I would see you there, so beaut—ahem, so brave... and I would, um,... derive! Yes, derive great strength! Derive... ...Ugh, why is this so difficult?!" — Marth to Caeda, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "Caeda: Good day, sir.
Roger: Ack!
Caeda: Peace, I've no wish to fight you. My name is Caeda. I hail from Talys.
Roger: Wh-what are you talking to me for?! This is a battlefield!
Caeda: Might I trouble you by asking your name, good sir?
Roger: M-my name? That's—It's Roger... Why?
Caeda: Hee hee, forgive me, Roger, it's just you looked sweet and kind. I just had to stop and talk to you. Tell me: do you believe in love? Oh, listen to me. I'm sure you already have a sweetheart back in Grust.
Roger: What?! No, no! I... mean, er, I'm quite unattached at the moment.
Caeda: Roger, think of the children—the poor women and children who shed tears every day this war drags on. I joined the Archaneian League to put an end to it, but I just... just... *Sniff* Oh, Roger, doesn't it break your heart?
Roger: Aye, miss. There, there. I, too, wish nothing more than for this needless war to end.
Caeda: Then... would you consider fighting with us to end it?
Roger: What? Oh heavens, no... I'm sorry, but I could never betray my kingdom.
'Caeda: Ah, yes, I see. You must have family back in Grust who are counting on you.
Roger: No, not especially. My parents are dead, and it's not as if I've a girl to call my own. But Grust is my home—always has been. I won't betray her.
Caeda: And I cannot convince you to change your mind?
Roger: I'm afraid not, miss.
Caeda: All right, sorry to bother you. But I'm glad we had this chance to talk, Roger. You're every bit the man I thought you were. Goodbye, then...
Roger: Wait—you're leaving?!
Caeda: Well, yes, Roger, I must! Every moment I stay here, I put you at risk. What if your comrades thought you were conspiring with the enemy? No, I must go...
Roger: ...You're very kind, Caeda. Dare I say, we don't have girls quite like you back in Grust. Um, perhaps... I suppose I could... Aw, heck, I'm going with you!" — Caeda and Roger, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "Roger: Prince Marth? I'm Roger, a Grustian soldier. Well, at least I was. I'm through fighting against you. Let me join your League.
Marth: Well, certainly. We need all the strong allies we can get. But why the sudden change of heart?
Roger: Well, er... There's this fetching girl named Caeda who asked me to, and, uh... What can I say? I think I'm in love. Try saying no to a girl who comes racing up to you in the heat of battle just to ask if you believe in love! Whew! I must've turned red as a strawberry! Heh heh..." — Roger and Marth, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "Elice, she... She gave herself up in order to let me escape with this message. Marth... I'm so sorry. She wanted me to warn you, no matter what... Sniff... " — Caeda to Marth, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "Caeda: Navarre! Since when does a swordsman of your caliber fall in with thieves and cutthroats?
Navarre: What? Who are you? Fly away, girl, before someone decides to swat you.
Caeda: Please, Navarre. Why fight for nothing when you can fight for something? Leave this rabble. Lend your sword to our cause. Or, if you will not, then turn it on me now instead." — Caeda and Navarre, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "Your strength has always impressed me. I've always felt weak, needing protection from others. I was envious of your strength, but I think I've got it figured out now... Your strength comes from your belief in your allies. My "weakness" could be your strength. I would like to stay with you longer and learn more from you and your strength, if that's OK." — Caeda's 5* level 40 conversation, Fire Emblem Heroes
- ↑ "I'm sorry, where was I? Oh right... When I met Marth, I wanted to help and support him however I could. But in reality, it was a selfish wish. I wanted to be near to someone like him, who made me feel safe. He was gentle, noble, and adored by all—and he believed in me. So, I gave everything I am to help his cause. That is how I gave him my love." — Caeda: Beloved Queen's level 40 conversation, Fire Emblem Heroes
- ↑ "Please don't forget, Ogma. As you protect us, we too shall protect you. You are not alone." — Caeda to Ogma, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "Goodbye, Marth... Stay strong... for me... " — Caeda's death quote, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "Caeda: Kris, thank you... for keeping Marth safe. But, I... I still feel uneasy. I just can't shake the feeling that Marth will only be in more danger from now on... I want to protect Marth, but I can't do even that, and it troubles me greatly...
Kris: Please don't worry, Princess. I'm certain Prince Marth will be safe. I will protect the prince in my lady's stead, without fail.
Caeda: Thank you, Kris. Yes, if you are there, then surely... My apologies, Kris. Marth and I only ever ask favors of you. But if you are with him, then I know... Yes, Marth and I believe that you'll manage. Kris, from this moment I ask that you always stay by Marth's side... and help him... " — Caeda and Kris, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "How the princess has grown, though! Sharp as a tack, that one. Such a change from when she was—Now what am I saying? Caeda has always been clever. Even as a wee girl she knew how to wrap her elders about her little finger." — Lorenz to Marth, about Caeda, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "Marth: You knew Caeda when she was little?
Lorenz: Oh, yes. The mischief she got into! Well, those are stories for another day. First, we've a battle to finish!" — Lorenz to Marth, about Caeda, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "Well, I may be a princess, but my motherland Talys is just a small island nation surrounded by the sea. I played around outside a lot during my childhood days. I hear they often called me a tomboy." — Caeda to Kris, base conversation, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "Kris: Hmm? What is this? It smells heavenly...
Caeda: Oh my, Chris. What good timing. I tried to make stew with some leftovers. Would you like to try some?
Kris: Princess Caeda, you've been cooking?
Caeda: Yes. I do hope Marth enjoys what I've made.
Kris: Oh, that is nice of you. Then, if you'll allow me... Ah! It's amazing! It tastes really good.
Caeda: I'm glad you like it. Do you think Marth will like it too?
Kris: Without a shadow of a doubt. It's delicious, after all. Though you're the princess of Talys, you're awfully skilled at cooking." — Caeda and Kris, base conversation, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "Caeda: My father has a saying: "A kingless country is a country still; but a king without subjects rules naught but hills." If you disobey your king to ensure his subjects' safety, how is that a betrayal? You are protecting his reign.
Lorenz: Protecting his reign? ...Aha ha ha, ha ha! Ahh, that mad logic! I feel as though I've shed twenty years and I'm talking to your father again. You win, Princess. I yield! I will join you, in the interests of king and country. Har!" — Caeda and Lorenz, recruitment conversation, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "Caeda: General Lorenz! My name is Caeda. I hail from Talys. My father has told me quite a bit about you.
Lorenz: Princess Caeda! My, look what a lovely young woman you've grown into. Your father was a good friend to me, many years ago.
Caeda: General, I heard you opposed Grust forming an alliance with Dolhr. Why didn't you try to stop it?
Dolhr: You think I did not try, Princess? Our king is meek; in the end, Dolhr proved better at cowing him than I did.
Caeda: But sir, surely you know that Dolhr intends to use Manaketes to conquer humankind! You must act now—for Grust's sake, if not the world's! Join us, General Lorenz. We can put an end to this battle right now.
Lorenz: Hmm... What you say makes sense enough, but I serve Grust. I cannot simply betray my country.
Caeda: Ah, but what makes a country?
Lorenz: Pardon?
Caeda: Is it one man—your king? Or is it the countless innocent people who make their home here?
Lorenz: Well, that's—Hmm..." — Caeda and Lorenz, recruitment conversation, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - ↑ "Archanea saw continuous wars that spread a dreary sadness across the land... I hope this world, too, can escape that fate." — Caeda: Beloved Queen at the castle, Fire Emblem Heroes
