“ | Honestly, I really don't care one way or another about the kingdom. I don't have the kind of direction you do. It's more like I just have a nagging desire to do SOMETHING. So I thought if I joined the Deliverance, I might figure out what that is. | ” | — Gray |

Gray (Japanese: グレイ Gray) is a Zofian villager appearing in Fire Emblem Gaiden. He is from Ram and is one of the first people to accompany Alm.
Fire Emblem Gaiden
Role
Gray is one of the first characters recruited in Gaiden. He does not have any story presence aside from the start of the game, where he agrees to preemptively attack Desaix before Ram became a target.[2]

Promotion stat gains
Soldier Cavalier Mage Archer Mercenary
- In Gaiden, promotion gains consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class' base stats. If the character's stats are higher than their promoted class' base stats, they will not receive any bonus; however, if all stats are higher, then they will receive +1 to HP.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
Gray reprises his role in the remake, where he is recruited automatically and has a much larger role interacting with Alm. He's willing to join Alm from the get-go, wanting to do something bigger with his life. He remains by Alm's side as his trusting friend, and frequently comments on the ongoing events, either with Alm himself, or Tobin.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gray is one of the four villagers that can be recruited in Act 1. He comes at level 5, so he does not need any levels to promote, with fairly decent bases for a villager and the highest base attack among them at 9, along with solid growths in most areas. Gray's biggest shortcoming is that the other two villagers, Tobin and Kliff, both have better resistance and speed (though he will have better short-term speed than Kliff) and thus compete with him for his best classes.
The Cavalier class boosts his speed and significantly improves his movement, but the lack of strong lances in Act 1 limits his initial performance. Gray will perform better in Act 3, as he can use the Ridersbane against a large number of enemy cavalry, but it can be used just as well or better by Clive, whose stats are on average better than Gray's, and his prospects are just as bad when compared to Mathilda in Act 3 and Zeke and Mycen later on.
Promoting to Soldier slightly improves Gray's attack and defense. However, Gray's base speed will fall off quickly, especially on Hard Mode, and his 20% speed growth in the Soldier class line will do him no favors. Tobin and Forsyth will have better speed and the same attack as a Soldier, Kliff is only one point behind and quickly closes the gap, and Lukas shares the same speed problem. Promoting to Knight and Baron greatly improves Gray's attack and defense late-game, but does not improve his low speed or resistance, while other members of the class can appreciate the attack and defense bonuses as well without being as affected by the low speed.
Promoting to Mercenary boosts Gray's speed to 10, making him the best user of the Lightning Sword in Act 1, which deals excellent damage against the majority of enemies, completely dominating Act 1 alongside a Mage. However, any Mercenary will be just as effective, as they will all have the same speed and damage with the Lightning Sword. As the game goes along, the Lightning Sword becomes too weak to be a good weapon and Gray will need a forged sword in order to fight enemies well. His high attack enables him to deal high damage often, but his low speed growth limits his effectiveness against the faster enemies that become more common through the game; both these points become less noticeable when he has just promoted as his attack is close to the class base and his speed will catch up with a promotion. Additionally, Gray's low resistance outside of Dread Fighter limits his usefulness against enemy magic users in Acts 1 and 3 and as a Dread looped Archer, and even as a Dread Fighter he takes more damage per enemy magic user he faces which can become significant when facing large groups. While Mercenary is Gray's best class in a vacuum, it is also Kliff's and arguably Tobin's best class in a vacuum, and having multiple Mercenaries is not recommended as there is only one Lightning Sword.
Gray eclipses all of the bases of an Archer, so he gets no stat bonuses, and he will deal little damage and have low accuracy in Act 1. Once forging becomes available, Gray will have access to the Killer Bow, which grants the Hunter's Volley combat art, greatly increasing his power on player phase, especially when paired with his good attack stat. However, any Archer can use the Killer Bow, and getting more than one is expensive; Gray has worse speed and resistance than Kliff and Python and is therefore worse at fighting Mages, and the latter even shares the same attack growth.
As a Mage, Gray has the best potential damage at the start of Act 1 and above-average damage through the rest of Act 1 and most of Act 3, as enemies have low resistance, and strong weapons for physical attackers are rare prior. Additionally, as Mages don't need weapons there is less redundancy with multiple mages, as the only way they hurt each other is by competing for shields and rings. However, it takes Gray until level 9 to learn his first spell other than Fire—Saggitae—by which point Gray's speed will be too low for him to double most enemies, and enemy resistance will have increased to the point where his single-hit damage is greatly reduced. He can effectively defeat Knights and Barons if given the Speed Ring thanks to his high damage with Saggitae, but the weaknesses of the mage class will hold him back long-term.

Personality
In Gaiden, Gray seems to be fairly laid back, even saying "let's go beat up that Desaix or whatever first", seemingly not being entirely familiar with who Desaix is. If Tobin dies, Gray turns to alcoholism, indicating that he may not be good at handling loss. As with nearly every character in Gaiden, there is not much characterization due to limited dialogue.
Shadows of Valentia adds more depth to his personality. Apart from being easygoing, chatty, and sometimes aloof, Gray is shown to have more knowledge of the world outside the village than his friends, as he comes from a merchant family.[3] He is confident in his abilities as shown in battle.

Endings
Gaiden
If both Tobin and Clair survived
He fought with Tobin over Clair, and won her heart splendidly.
"For a man, it's not the face that matters, but the heart!" Or so he declared.
If Tobin died
Due to his grief over Tobin's death in battle, he drowns himself in alcohol every day.
When will a smile ever return to his face...?
If Clair died
Having lost the one he loved, never to meet her again, he set off on a journey by himself.
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
If both Tobin and Clair survived
As a member of the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights, Gray worked diligently at restoring the continent. He applied himself equally to winning Clair's heart, and beat Tobin out in the end. As he was heard to say, "Pick the guy with the big heart, not the pretty face."
If Tobin died
Devastated by Tobin's death, Gray was nearly lost to the demon drink until Clair convinced him to clean up. After declining knighthoods in the One Kingdom, the two married and lived out quiet lives. Gray was especially fond of his son, whom he named after his friend.
If Clair died
Having lost the woman he loved, Gray surprised even himself by embracing the life of a vagabond and setting off for parts unknown. His friends spared no effort in attempting to track him down, but it was to no avail.

Fire Emblem Cipher
Gray is featured on three cards in Fire Emblem Cipher. These cards and other Japanese Cipher parlance denote his name as (グレイ(バレンシア) Gray (Valentia)) in order to differentiate him from Asugi, who has the same Japanese name; English-language fandom parlance has no need to make such a distinction.
