Ryan
| ||||||||||||
|
Ryan (Japanese: ライアン Raian) is the younger brother of Gordin and a fresh recruit into the 7th Platoon of the Altean knights, inspired to join by his brother's stories of the War of Shadows.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 2
Role
Ryan is part of the retinue of knights who accompanied Marth on his initial expedition to Grust, and remained in the forces for the rest of the war.

- In Mystery of the Emblem, promotion gains for HP and weapon level consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the x value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base value. If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.
Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Sniper is a class that has some unique advantages in this game: in a game where mounted units are forced to dismount down to 6 movement in indoor maps, Sniper's 7 movement coupled with their access to ranged attacks makes them solid deploys for such maps, and their ability to cross rivers and streams is useful in some maps such as chapters 10 and 13.
Unfortunately, Ryan is a rather questionable unit to fill the role compared to his main competition in Gordin and Jeorge. Firstly, while Sniper is a solid promoted class, Archer is easily one of the worst classes in the game with low base stats, low movement, and harsher terrain penalties compared to other foot classes. Because of this, archers will want to leave this stage as soon as possible, however, Ryan joins at level 1, four levels lower than Gordin. Gordin also has a +2 or +3 lead over Ryan in every base stat. While he does have better growths than Gordin, the only significant lead he has is in skill, a stat Gordin does not struggle in due to all Bows having 90-100 hit and Snipers gaining 5 skill upon promotion. He also lags behind in weapon level over Gordin, which means he will need more levels to use the Parthia. The Parthia is a very important weapon as it not only has 20 might but also doubles the wielder's experience gain, which pairs very well with the astral shards.
The promotion to Sniper grants very good bonuses, giving him a solid boost to his strength, a huge boost to his speed and skill, and bumps his weapon level up to 10 if he is below said number. While this is enough to wield strong bows such as a Silver Bow, he would still need to grow his weapon level 2 more times to gain access to Parthia, and due to his 40% weapon level growth he will need on average 5 levels to do so. The player might want to invest a Manual on Ryan to get to Parthia immediately after promotion for this reason.
Regardless of whether he is going to be used long-term, the early game gives him chances to contribute while getting EXP. Chapters 2 and 3 feature a good number of strong Dracoknights which are very hard to take down without bows or magic, making him a good unit to help defeat them. The first Orion's Bolt of the game is also available early and since the promotion bonuses are strong, he can benefit from a promotion at level 10 if the player wishes to use him.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
One year after the War of Shadows, Ryan joined the Altean army to begin training as a knight, following Gordin's path. He was assigned to the 7th Platoon, with other cadets like Roderick, Luke, Katarina and another recruit. Near the end of their training, Ryan and the 7th platoon helped protect Marth from an assassination attempt by Reese.
A year later, as in Mystery of the Emblem, Ryan was part of the retinue of knights who accompanied Marth on his initial expedition to Grust, and remained in the army for the rest of the War of Heroes.
As with a number of other characters in New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Ryan available through Everyone's Conditions: Ryan's Bow.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ryan's near perfect availability and solid growths all around make him a reliable character to consider for a spot in the player's team. He's one of the few characters with access to ranged attacks during the prologue, with one of the other two that are available (Gordin) being optional for the prologue. Being able to attack from range is particularly important in Maniac and Lunatic to avoid taking counterattacks. His great availability also gives him time to build his bow rank up to C before reclassing becomes available and other options can be explored. Beyond the prologue, early chapters offer not only additional scenarios where avoiding counters is appreciated but they also throw promoted Dracoknights at the player, which are weak to bows. If the player forges an Iron or Steel Bow up to the might of a Silver Bow using the funds available, Ryan can OHKO Dracoknights, even in Lunatic (using a bow with 12 might, Ryan would need 1 strength proc and C bows or 2 strength procs with D bows for exact damage). Before promotion, reclassing him to a Hunter is a good idea to get extra movement and boosted offensive stats while keeping his bow rank. Looking at his personal growths, Ryan has good strength, skill and HP, solid defense and passable speed and luck.
Ryan is a bit limited in terms of which classes are good for him since the main reason why his default speed growth is good to begin with is his class; the Archer classline is one of the faster ones in the game at 30% speed growth in addition to a solid base speed for Snipers. Most other classes will lower his speed to variably lower levels. One of the best options to consider for Ryan for endgame is Horseman since it is a high-movement class that makes use of his bow rank while also giving him the option to use swords for added coverage against, for example, endgame dragons and grants him a speed cap of 30 which can actually come into play in Lunatic mode. He does require some investment to fully take advantage of the class, however. While alternating between the Archer and Hunter classlines, his speed growth also alternates between 50 and 45%. His chances of capping speed as a Horseman even at level 20/20 are low, which makes Speedwings an advisable investment in the higher difficulty modes where enemies eventually cap their speed or come close to it. To make use of the fact that Horsemen can use swords, Ryan would require either two Arms Scrolls or to train his sword rank to D plus one Arms Scroll to reach C, which unlocks effective weaponry (Wyrmslayer, Armorslayer). As a Sniper he performs similarly, albeit with lower movement, without access to swords and with a speed cap of 29. Again, Speedwings are advisable in higher difficulty modes. A less orthodox but effective option to consider is the Pirate classline. While he will need to build his axe rank from scratch, this is a potent class that fits his growths well. As a Pirate and Berserker, Ryan will develop great strength and HP with a solid 50% speed growth to go along with those stats. His high personal skill growth complements the shaky accuracy of axes pretty well, too. Sadly, this build forgoes his bow rank but he can always reclass back to a bow-wielding class if his utility with bows is required. Reclassing to Warrior is an option to use both axes and bows in chapters where the player deems this combination to provide an advantage. Overall, Ryan is a good growth unit to consider in New Mystery.
