“ | Sometimes I have to dance for disgusting men, but that's a part of my job! We do what we do to survive! | ” | — Laylea |
---|
Laylea (Japanese: レイリア Laylea) is a travelling Jugdrali dancer and the elder sister of Charlot, Hannibal's adopted son. While working in the city of Dahna, she became close with Ares, the prince of Agustria, and later accompanied him in fighting for Seliph's liberation army against the Grannvale Empire.
Laylea is Lene's substitute character, filling her role in the story and gameplay if Silvia died or failed to be married in the course of the first generation.
Biography
Little is known of Laylea's origins or upbringing, save that she likely grew up in an orphanage like Charlot did before Hannibal adopted him. She took to dancing as a way to earn money to survive.
Her work as a dancer eventually took her to Dahna around Grann 777, where she met Ares, who was there with Javarro's mercenaries serving a job with the city's Count Bramsel. The two quickly established a friendship, and when Bramsel made a lecherous advance at her, Ares stepped in to force him to back down from his solicitations. However, the two soon fought over Ares needing to go fight Seliph's army at Melgen. After he left, Bramsel attempted to approach her again, and Leaylea's resistance to his actions led to her imprisonment in the Dahna dungeons. Following Seliph's capture of Dahna, she was freed from imprisonment by one of his soldiers, and upon meeting Ares - now with Seliph's army - she joined him in the army, wishing to stay close to him in future.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Laylea is a level 3 Dancer who joins in Chapter 7 of Genealogy of the Holy War, the second chapter of its second generation; she is recruited instead of Lene if Silvia is dead or unmarried at the end of Chapter 5. As Laylea has low strength, defense and HP, is limited to C-level swords, and has no access to Follow-Up without the Follow-Up Ring, she cannot excel in combat. However, like Silvia and Lene, Laylea has unique utility in her ability to dance; she can refresh up to four adjacent units, allowing each to take another turn, which can be used to attack, move, heal, etc.
Laylea greatly benefits from the Knight Ring and Leg Ring; the Knight Ring grants its user Canto—allowing them to move after most actions, thus granting increased flexibility—while the Leg Ring increases its user's movement by 3. With both items, Laylea can keep up with the high-move mounted units and grant them additional actions over multiple turns. The Knight Ring is a somewhat competitive item, but Laylea makes the best use of it. The Leg Ring, however, is highly competitive, as every unit benefits from additional movement; Seliph in particular is often the strongest user of the Leg Ring, as he is already among the strongest units available, and the Leg Ring allows him to clear Chapter 6 faster. Seliph does not need the Leg Ring as much after he has promoted, but Laylea has to purchase it from the pawn shop in order to use it—if no one inherits it, Julius will drop the Leg Ring in Chapter 10, but Laylea is incapable of dealing more than 1 damage to him without a critical hit, and requires a very dedicated setup to defeat him.
As a substitute rather than a child unit, Laylea has a major disadvantage compared to Lene: she cannot receive any inheritance; though any skills or Holy Blood are of minor impact, Lene can inherit the Knight Ring and the Leg Ring—Laylea cannot. While Laylea can buy both items, it costs a total of 60,000 gold to purchase both; as Laylea struggles in the arena, she cannot easily obtain gold, nor can she inherit any gold or the Bargain skill or Bargain Band to reduce the price of the items—the Bargain Band will half the cost of the Leg and Knight Rings, but purchasing it costs 40,000 gold, increasing the total cost to 70,000. Laylea can gather gold herself by visiting villages, but this can often take her away from units that would benefit from her dance; alternately, she can receive gold given by a Thief, but that requires multiple transfers of large amounts of gold, something especially constraining when concerned for the experience rank which requires many units to obtain gold for the Paragon Ring.
Laylea does have one advantage over Lene: Charm. Lene will always inherit Miracle and Adept from Silvia, skills which she has limited use for; Laylea always has Charm as a personal skill, increasing the hit rate and avoid of allies within three spaces by 10%. However, Charm requires Laylea to be close to combat, and she is not safe when in range of enemies; she can safely boost allies against immobile bosses, but is in danger around mobile enemies or ones with long-range attacks. Additionally, Laylea's lower movement without the Leg Ring makes it difficult to reach allies that would be aided by Charm, and she cannot provide a boost with Charm while also moving out of enemy range with the Knight Ring.
Personality
Laylea tends to be flirtatious, particularly liking to tease those who are embarrassed and flustered.[1] Because of the demands of her own job as a dancer, Laylea believes that holding grudges based on somebody's job, no matter what it led to, is foolish.[2] She was very attached to Ares, and was outright angry when he needed to leave to fight for Javarro, even blaming him for the fact that she felt Javarro was using him.[3]
