Toadette (キノピコ Kinopiko?, , lit. Kid Toad) is a female Toad who appears as a playable character in various spin-off games throughout the Mario series. Since her first appearance in Mario Kart: Double Dash, Toadette has usually been paired with the Toad character in spin-off games.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Toadette, Mario Party 8

Toadette's artwork for Mario Party 8, showing her typical appearance

Toadette is seen wearing a sleeveless pink dress with a thin white line near the lower portion (except in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door). Layered on top of the dress is a bright red vest with a yellow trim lining. Underneath this, she wears white pants and brown, padded shoes. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Toadette's artwork depicts her as having a scarlet red dress and maroon vest, although her in-game model shows her with a pink dress and bright red vest.

Toadette has the same body and facial structure as other Toads; she has the same round head and skin tone most other members of her species share. Her eyes are small, dark, and oval-shaped. Like most Toads, she has the appearance of a child, even in terms of her voice, making her sound like a young girl.

Toadette has a pink cap with white spots, same as Small Blue Toad's blue cap with white spots in Super Mario 3D World. She has a unique set of braid-like plaits, each with two pink plaits and a third plait pink with white spots, that match the design of her Toad cap; they flow freely and tend to bounce around when she is in the middle of any activities.

Toadette also has her own form named Peachette, giving her a resemblance to Princess Peach. However, there are differences, such as the notably different dress, Toad cap-like crown, gray pupils, hairtails, and Toad-like shoes. This Peach-like form makes its debut in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

In her builder form in Super Mario Maker 2, Toadette wears a pink hardhat on her head and a belt around her waist.

Personality[]

Toadette happy MPDS

An example of Toadette's happiness, as seen in Mario Party DS

Although Toadette is usually considered as being a happy, spunky, and sometimes sensitive person, when she is upset or reality starts to kick in, she can become childish, timid, and stubborn.

Toadette was emotional when Punio stopped visiting the Rogueport Sewers. If players change the GameCube clock time, Lucky who runs the lottery, says the lottery numbers are screwed up because of the clock change. When he tells Toadette, she cried her little eyes out. The final time this was shown was when the final tutorial session is finished, Toadette runs off crying knowing that she would not see Mario for the rest of the game.

In Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, Toadette is pushy because she forced Mario and Toad to fix their hotel. In Mario Super Sluggers, Toadette was shown to be very determined and stubborn when she claimed that the team needed her, and she would not take no for an answer.

Relationships[]

Mario[]

Toadette and Mario are shown to be good friends. Toadette provides help, assistance, and activities to him. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, she speaks to him with hearts often in her speech bubbles, and whenever he leaves, she expresses concern for his safety.

Luigi[]

Toadette has rarely been in speaking terms with Luigi, but during the events of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the two have interacted more frequently. Toadette has built Papercraft machines that can be used in battle, and in return, Luigi and Mario find Paper Toads scattered throughout the Mushroom Kingdom to give to Toadette, so she can build stronger, more resilient papercraft. When Toadette's Papercrafts are destroyed by Bowser, Luigi tried to console her, though Toadette reveals that she already had an idea for how the trio could defeat Bowser.

Toad[]

Toadette and Toad are best friends with each other, and not to mention working partners, too. In Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, an image of Toad and Toadette both holding flowers can be seen in Yoshi Park 2. The ending photo in Mario Kart Wii shows the two Toads holding hands with each other. The opening of Super Mario Galaxy shows the two of them sitting in the grassy plain watching the shooting stars.

Peach[]

Toadette has been considered to be best friends with Peach. When Toadette first made her debut in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Peach examined Toadette and considered her a "rare Toad". Toadette had aspirations to team up with Peach during one cup but went with Daisy instead. In Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers, Peach formed a baseball team known as the Peach Monarchs, with Toadette being on the team. Toadette has good chemistry with Peach in both games. Toadette also expressed concern for Peach's safety in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle when the Rabbids begin "renovating" the Mushroom Kingdom.

Daisy[]

Toadette has been considered to be best friends with Daisy. When Toadette first made her debut in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, she was not all that familiar with the other characters except for her default partner Toad. But when Toadette met Daisy for the first time, the two seemed to get along very well when they teamed up. The two would be on the Peach Monarchs baseball team in both Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers respectively. Even though their chemistry was only neutral in both baseball games, the two were still great friends. During the Ocean Tour event of Mario Kart Tour, both Toadette and Daisy were entrusted Sailor uniforms. Daisy and Toadette are also seen talking to each other in the opening scenes of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]

Toadette and her default partner, Toad, are unlockable characters. Both she and Toad can be unlocked by completing Special Cup on 100cc. Both Toadette and Toad are both lightweight characters, and their Special Item is the Golden Dash Mushroom. Toadette has her own personal kart, Toadette Kart.

Mario Kart Arcade GP 2[]

Toadette makes a cameo in Yoshi Park 2, where large paper cut-out structures of herself, Toad, and Toadsworth can be seen within the Trick House section.

Mario Kart Wii[]

MKWii Toadette

Toadette in Mario Kart Wii.

Toadette is an unlockable playable character. She can be unlocked by either playing all thirty-two courses in Time Trials or playing 2,550 races. Prior to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection's discontinuation, it was also possible to unlock Toadette by winning 1,000 WFC races.

Toadette is once again a lightweight character, so she can use any small-sized kart or bike. Toadette's color scheme for her vehicles are white and magenta. Toadette is the only lightweight to have an off-road bonus, which is rivaled by that of Dry Bowser. She also has a minor speed bonus, which is rivaled by that of Rosalina, Baby Peach, and the player's Mii.

In the Mario Kart Wii Prima guide, it is said that Toadette got permission from Peach to race, making her excited.

Mario Kart 8[]

Following an absence from Mario Kart 7, Toadette appears as a playable character in both versions. In Mario Kart 8, Toadette is an unlockable character, and like most characters, she is unlocked at random when completing a Cup. However, Toadette is the only character in the E3 2013 build to be unlockable, and she appears on the loading screen. Toadette is also the Normal Staff Ghost for Toad Harbor.

Toadette is one of the heavier lightweights, like with Toad, Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Lakitu, Larry, Wendy, and Isabelle. The characters are each heavier than Lemmy Koopa and the baby characters, but are still lighter than Peach, Daisy, and Yoshi.

Toadette, along with Rosalina and Wendy, appears on two out of four Women of Racing Organization posters in N64 Royal Raceway.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Toadette is now available from the start, but her stats are now only shared with Wendy and Isabelle. Toadette is also the 200cc Staff Ghost for N64 Toad's Turnpike.

Mario Kart Tour[]

Toadette is one of the starter characters, but if the player chooses a different starter character, Toadette instead becomes an unlockable character. Toadette is classified as a Super driver, and her special skill is the Triple Mushrooms. Toadette was also a team representative in the Toad vs. Toadette Tour.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Toadette

Toadette in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Toadette appears whenever Mario discovers a new hammer upgrade or a new pair of Boots. She hosts a tutorial session with Mario and explains how to use the new ability, and whenever Mario uses a new item on the first try correctly, Toadette blushes. During her last tutorial with Mario, Toadette runs off in tears of emotions, knowing she will not see Mario for the rest of his adventure. After Punio returns to Boggly Woods, Toadette leaves a message on the notice board in Rogueport, as she wondered where Mario was. If Mario is caught trying to fix the Happy Lucky Lottery, Lucky mentions that he had to tell Toadette that she is not able to play, which he said caused Toadette to "burst into tears."

The German and Spanish versions incorrectly refer to Toadette as Vanna T., due to both sharing a Japanese name.

In Mario Tennis series[]

Mario Power Tennis[]

During the introduction cinematic, Toadette makes a cameo appearance on the scoreboard showing both herself and Toad.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash[]

This is Toadette's first playable appearance in a Mario Tennis game. Toadette is an unlockable, and she can be unlocked by either participating in 10 Mega Battles or by purchasing her for 5,000 coins. Toadette is a Tricky type, meaning her shots curve. Because of her small body frame, Toadette has lower reach than average, but she has a quick and long-ranged lunge.

Mario Tennis Aces[]

MTA Toadette alt

Toadette returns as a playable character, this time being classified as Technical. Toadette's Trick Shots are Cutesy Turn for forward and Cheerful Skip for sideways, and her Special Shot is the Hop Skip Jump. Toadette has an alternate costume in which she wears a proper tennis outfit.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party 6[]

Toadette is an unlockable playable character, and the player can unlock her by paying thirty Stars at the Star Bank.

Mario Party Advance[]

Toadette co-hosts Party Land alongside Toad and the sole host of Challenge Land. Toadette also hosts Duel Dash.

Mario Party 7[]

Toadette MP7 artwork

Toadette's artwork for Mario Party 7

Toadette is now available from the start. Toad and Toadette share the same special orb, the Triple 'Shroom Orb, and using it allows her and Toad to roll two Dice Blocks for three turns.

Mario Party 8[]

Toadette returns as a default playable character. Like in Mario Party 7, Toadette's default partner is Toad.

Mario Party DS[]

Toadette hosts the board Toadette's Music Room, being one of five Board Hosts.

In Story mode, when the playable characters reach Toadette's Music Room, Toadette needs the heroes' help because Toadsworth was going to conduct her music recital, but a Hammer Bro came along and ruined their plans by wrecking Toadette's Music Room and breaking many of Toadette's instruments.

When Mario and the gang defeat the Hammer Bro, Toadette thanked them and then gave them the second Sky Crystal. Toadette also keeps the music stand from her would-be recital in her room afterward, along with two Metronomes that only Toadsworth knows the secrets of.

Toadette is featured as a type of target in the minigame Hot Shots, although shooting at it takes away thirty points from the player's score.

Mario Party 10[]

Toadette is an unlockable playable character, the first time in a Mario Party game since Mario Party 6. The player can unlock Toadette by purchasing her for 600 Party Points, similarly to Mario Party 6. Toadette can be used in any mode except amiibo Party.

Mario Party: Star Rush[]

Toadette MP Star Rush artwork

Mario Party: Star Rush artwork of Toadette

Toadette is an unlockable playable character. She can be unlocked once enough party points have been earned to reach level 4.

When players recruit Toadette in the Toad Scramble mode, she can make flowers bloom to release coins, like with Peach and Daisy. Toadette's Dice Block is the Cutie Dice Block, which rolls only 3's and 4's. Toadette is the only playable character to not have an amiibo.

Mario Party: The Top 100[]

Toadette is a non-playable character. She is one of the game's co-hosts alongside Toad, similarly to Mario Party Advance. Toadette in particular hosts the Championship Battles mode.

Toadette appears in the returning Mario Party 6 minigame, Rocky Road, where both her and Toad replace the Shy Guys from the minigame's original iteration.

Super Mario Party[]

SMP Toadette

Super Mario Party artwork of Toadette

Toadette and Toad once against appear as non-playable characters, specifically as co-hosts. The two of them first appear in the opening cutscene. In it, when the characters argue over who gets to claim the Super Star title, Mario suggests that they hold a party to determine who becomes the Super Star, and Toad and Toadette agree to serve as judges of the competition.

Toadette in particular hosts for Stars, and after a character obtains a Star, Toadette moves to another space. If the player refuses to gain the Star for the first time, she is shocked and assumes that the player does not need it; she asks why the player does not want the Star. If the player refuses for the second time, Toadette says that she hopes the player does not regret it. If the player refuses again, Toadette allows the player to pass. In their mind, she thinks the player is "weird" or using a "strange strategy."

Sometimes, if Toadette is talked to in the Party Plaza, she mentions that she should start playing for a change.

Mario Party Superstars[]

Like in Super Mario Party, Toadette is at the Star Space, where she gives a Star to whoever pays her 20 coins. A difference is that when Toadette changes spaces, she flies off-screen and then descend back down to the new Star Space, instead of float directly to the next spot. Toadette also operates the Friend House in Village Square.

In Yakuman DS[]

Toadette is a default opponent, being of the normal/hard difficulty. Toadette is speedy and can win the hand faster.

In Mario Baseball series[]

Mario Superstar Baseball[]

Toadette is an unlockable playable character, this being her first playable appearance in a sports game. Toadette is a speed type character who has excellent speed, but her batting abilities are subpar, and her pitching and fielding are mediocre. In Challenge mode, Toadette starts off as a member of Peach Monarchs, and she can be unlocked after completing the mode with Peach as the team captain. Toadette has good chemistry with Toad, Peach, Toadsworth, and Daisy. She has bad chemistry with Bowser, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser Jr., Goomba, and Paragoomba. She is tied with Yoshi for being the best runner.

Mario Super Sluggers[]

Toadette Sluggers screenshot

Toadette reprises her role as a playable character, having the same stats as in Mario Superstar Baseball. In Challenge mode, Toadette is seen guarding a hedge maze near the outskirts of Peach Ice Garden. Toadette explains that the hedge was sabotaged by Bowser Jr. and his minions, who have started a war at the Baseball Kingdom. After the player reverts the hedge, Toadette is unlocked and joins the team. Toadette also expresses concern for the flowers in the garden that are slow to grow. After defeating Bowser's team in Story Mode, Toadette is seen in the cinematic celebrating with the other characters and gazing towards the sunset at the entrance of the Baseball Kingdom before the lights turn on for the night. In the last cinematic, Toadette is seen walking alongside with Daisy, marching with other characters toward the Daisy Cruiser. They have desserts until a display of fireworks storm the night sky.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Toadette makes a cameo on the second page of the opening storybook montage, alongside Toad. An oddity is that the second-to-last pages shows two Toadettes, even though she is a character and not a species.

Super Mario Run[]

Toadette is the referee of the Toad Rally and in addition, she is the only playable character who can collect every colored Toad from her opponent in Toad Rally.

Playing as Toadette starts the level with an additional 100 seconds on the time limit than normal, although this does not occur in multiplayer if both Toadette and Nabbit are present. Because of these gameplay advantages, Toadette was given the label "Easier," or "Easy" in European and Australian versions.

Toadette appears in the opening cutscene, the ending cutscene and the credits, replacing Blue Toad from the original New Super Mario Bros. U, although Blue Toad still remains a playable character. She was thrown out of Princess Peach's Castle when Bowser and the Koopalings' airships invaded it, so Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad and Toadette ran to save her.

Toadette appears in World 2-1, in which she runs a seaside hotel. It was unintentionally turned into a corkscrew by the S.S. Brass, which the cyclone jettisoned into as Mario/Luigi and Toad were on their way to acquiring the second Music Key. Toadette accused them of vandalizing her hotel, and demands them to fix it. At the request of Toadette, Mario/Luigi, Toad, the guests, and Toadette herself use the power of dancing to restore her hotel to its original state.

Once Toadette's hotel is repaired, Toadette rewards Mario/Luigi and Toad with a ship and directs them to where they can find the next Music Key. However, Toadette soon becomes upset when she notices that the heroes had left while she was still talking.

Behind the scenes[]

Etymology[]

Her name is a portmanteau of the word "toad" (which she is a member of the species), and the word ‘ette’ which can be used to make words more feminine or can be used to refer to smaller words (such as kitchenette).

Trivia[]

  • It is widely assumed that Toad and Toadette are boyfriend and girlfriend. However, the official guides for Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe state that they're brother and sister. Despite this, other sources have been ambiguous about their relationship, but a large number of them say that they’re only friends.
  • Toadette and Amy Rose share the same voice actress, Taeko Kawata.
  • With her appearance in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Toadette is the only character in the series to go from debuting in a spin-off (Mario Kart: Double Dash!!) to eventually becoming playable in a main series game.
