Donkey Kong Super Mario Mario Party Paper Mario Mario & Luigi
This article is about the item. For other subjects named Hammer, see Hammer (disambiguation).

Hammers are a recurring item and weapon in the Mario franchise. They made their overall debut within the Donkey Kong arcade game before making their Mario debut in Super Mario Bros.

Hammers are usually thrown by the Hammer Bros., but have also been used by Mario and Luigi effectively, the latter especially in the Mario & Luigi series. In the role-playing games, using a hammer is often the traditional way of attacking a spiked enemy, as their spikes protect them from any jumping attacks.

In Donkey Kong franchise[]

Donkey Kong[]

The Hammer is a temporary power-up that Mario can acquire to destroy any barrels thrown by Donkey Kong as well as Fireballs.

In the Atari 2600 version, due to the system's limited palette, the Hammer sprites show a purple head, or blue head in the game's equivalent of the 100m stage.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[]

Hammers are based on their appearance from the Donkey Kong arcade game, but have had their role expanded upon, mainly from how Mario now has the ability to throw a hammer upwards. There are several points in which Mario has to do this, then quickly climb the ladder onto the next platform above to pick it up again. If the Hammer touches a floor, it disappears instantly.

Hammers received a stronger variation, the Super Hammer, which can break brick walls.

In Wrecking Crew series[]

VS. Wrecking Crew[]

Hammers are used by Mario and Luigi to demolish objects on screen or to competitively knock each other to the bottom of the stage.

Wrecking Crew[]

This is the debut appearance of Foreman Spike, who also uses hammers. There is also the powerful Golden Hammer, which can destroy objects with a single hit.

Wrecking Crew '98[]

Characters use hammers to destroy panels that are then sent to their opponent.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros.[]

Hammers are instead obstacles thrown by Hammer Bros., and Mario or Luigi have to avoid them. A few of the later False Bowsers as well as Bowser himself throw hammers as one of their attacks.

Super Mario Bros. Special[]

Hammers are temporary items that function similarly as in Donkey Kong, except Mario can now jump while using it. Mario can still keep the hammer even after taking damage.

In the ending, their name is misspelled Hummer.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Aside from returning as objects thrown by Hammer Bros., Mario or Luigi can now throw hammers while in their Hammer form, as wearing the Hammer Suit gives them this ability.

There are also Hammer overworld items that can be obtained from defeating certain Hammer Bros. encountered on the world map. These Hammers are single-use items that can break a rock on the world map, opening a path that had previously been blocked. In most cases, using a Hammer on the world map just opens up a quicker route, but in some cases, it is the only way to access a part of a map. In the original Nintendo Entertainment System version, these Hammers have a very subtle difference with their palette when shown on the Hammer Bro stages and on the inventory screen.

Super Mario World[]

In a cutscene shown after Mario or Luigi defeat Lemmy Koopa, they are seen destroying Lemmy's Castle with a hammer. Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers also throw relatively wide hammers as they swing back and forth on their Flying Platforms.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Hammers return as objects thrown by Hammer Bros. Just as before, Mario or Luigi take damage from touching one.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Hammers retain their role of being objects thrown by Hammer Bros. In addition, a Yoshi can now eat a Hammer Bro's hammers and spit them out to attack Hammer Bros. and other enemies.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Like with the Yoshi species in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Yoshi character can eat a hammer and spit it out.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Regular hammers return as objects thrown by Hammer Bros. Aside from this, Morton Koopa Jr. uses a magical hammer in his battle to send Big Pokey segments toward Mario and other playable characters.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

In the opening cutscene, Mario and Luigi are shown to wield hammers and wrenches when fixing the Clear Pipe. Similarly, some Sprixie Princesses use hammers when building Clear Pipes after being rescued, although some use wrenches instead. As usual, Hammer Bros. throw hammers to try and attack the playable characters.

Super Mario Run[]

Hammers are used to clear Thwomps in Kingdom Builder.

The Hammer is Mario's weapon of choice. It is acquired by defeating the Hammer Bros. guarding the entrance to Mushroom Kingdom. Equipping it increases Mario's attack power by 10. Stronger variations of the Hammer appear later on, with the Masher being the strongest of them.

There is another Hammer that can Mario can buy from a shop in Seaside Town for 123 coins after his party has defeated Yaridovich. The only difference this hammer has is that, when equipped, it has the effect of giving a Lucky Bonus Flower if Mario defeats an enemy with a Timed Hit.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party[]

Bash 'n' Cash

The three characters go after the solo character with their hammers in the Mario Party minigame Bash 'n' Cash

Hammers are used as melee weapons in the minigames Bash 'n' Cash and Coin Block Bash. In the former, the team members are given squeaky hammers, which are used to attack the solo character in the Bowser Suit to cause them to drop Coin Bags or coins. In the latter, a heavy hammer made of wood and metal is given to the solo character, who can use them to break Brick Blocks in a single strike or to stun opposing characters by either squashing them or to knock them away. It is possible for the hammer to be knocked away from the solo character for a different character to use.

Hammers thrown by Hammer Bros. also appear in minigames where they appear, namely Hammer Drop and Mario Bandstand. In the former, a Hammer Bro occasionally throws hammers from the cloud, while in the latter, failing a beat might cause a hammer to be thrown to whoever performed a beat incorrectly.

Mario Party 2[]

A hammer is used in the minigame Lights Out, which the solo character has to use to knock out the team members, each wielding a light bulb. There is a heavier hammer used in the Item minigame Hammer Slammer, which appears exclusively in Space Land, and it is used to knock a lever so that the shuttle is sprung upwards to an item that the player's character can obtain.

Mario Party 3[]

Toad uses a hammer as his weapon when he is a partner.

Hammers are used as melee weapons in Pipe Cleaners and Swing 'n' Swipe. In the former, each player uses a squeaky hammer to knock the Baby Bowsers emerging from any of the four pipes. In the latter, the single player uses a squeaky hammer to hit one of the Baby Bowsers to win the item that the target is holding.

Hammers that are thrown by Hammer Bros. appear in the minigames Parasol Plummet, Puddle Paddle, and Awful Tower, where Hammer Bros. themselves appear. In the former two, Hammer Bros. may throw coins alongside hammers, but in the latter, they only throw hammers.

In Messy Memory, a hammer is one of ten items that players have to memorize the placement of before putting it back onto the shelf.

Mario Party 4[]

A type of hammer called the MiniMega Hammer appears as an item, and it provides the same effect on its target as a Mini Mushroom or Mega Mushroom, depending on timing.

Mario Party 7[]

Hammers appear in a variety of minigames. They most prominently appear in the 8-player minigame Hammer Spammer, set on a large, hammer-shaped platform, where the characters have to avoid hammers thrown by Hammer Bros. On occasion, two giant hammers, which give off a shadow to project their landing spot, can smash characters. In another 8-player minigame, Duct & Cover, each character wields a hammer that is used to cover any leaks in a pipe. The battle minigame Monty's Revenge involves Monty Moles wielding hammers, and as the characters pop up from the holes, they have to avoid being hit by a Monty Mole's hammer. In the 4-player minigame Pokey Pummel, each character uses a hammer to knock away every segment of their own Pokey, with each segment requiring five hits to knock away.

Mario Party 9[]

Hammers return in the minigame Spike Strike, where players have to defeat Spike by using hammers to deflect his Spiked Balls back at him. One golden hammer appears each round, and it is worth three points if used, instead of one point like with regular hammers.

The Hammer is an item frequently used by Mario. It is found in Goomba Village, in Jr. Troopa's Playground. The item is used to break large yellow blocks and can break bricked blocks. It is then replaced by the Super Hammer and Ultra Hammer. Mario can use the hammer in battle as well. The hammer has many badges used for it.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Hammer sticker PMSS

The Hammer returns in Paper Mario: Sticker Star as one of Mario's main means of attack. Early in the game, a Toad gives it to Mario after he has peeled one of the Toads. Mario can use his hammer outside of battle to knock over bushes, hit blocks, and get First Strikes against enemies. However, in battle, Mario can only use his Hammer if he has any Hammer-related stickers present. It is learned that in Rustle Burrow after Mario temporary loses his Hammer, he cannot use any Hammer-related stickers.

Aside from the regular Hammer, there are several variations, including the Worn-Out Hammer, Eekhammer, Slaphammer, Hurlhammer, Baahammer, Chillhammer, and Burnhammer. Hammers also have Shiny, Flashy, Big Shiny, and Megaflash ranks, all of which differ in power and rarity.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]

The Hammer is again the weapon of choice for both Mario and Luigi. It is forged from a Hoohoo Block by the Hammerhead Bros.. Eventually, the Hammer is succeeded by the Super Hammer and Ultra Hammer. The Hammer is used in battle for both solo attacks and Bros. Attacks. Hammers are also used to counter spiked enemies or enemies from above, but timing needs to be very precise as Mario and/or Luigi drop their hammers if they hold it for too long, due to the weight of the hammers, therefore giving the enemy an open advantage to attack them.

In the remake, Hammers function mostly the same, except Mario and Luigi do not drop their hammer if they hold it out for too long.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]

In this game, only Baby Mario and Baby Luigi can use hammers. The hammers are given to the babies after they defeat the brainwashed Hammer Bros. Not only can they use the hammers for defense, but they can also use the Baby Drill ability to dig underground.

Hammers have the same use as in previous games but unlike the predecessors and as of this game, the bros no longer drop their Hammers during a counterattack if held for too long.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

The hammers function as they normally do in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Paper Mario's hammer move is different from Mario and Luigi's as each copy of his can strike an enemy. However, like Mario and Luigi's hammers, he cannot hammer flying enemies.
