Paper Mario

Frozen is a recurring status ailment in the Paper Mario series. It first appears in Paper Mario.

Description[]

Whenever Mario or another character has this ailment, they are frozen for a set number of turns, and only certain items can heal them.

History[]

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario[]

The Frozen ailment is mainly caused by Frost Piranhas. The Crystal King's Ice Beam attack is infamous for freezing Mario for set amount of turns and when Mario is frozen, he is left wide open to attacks while only his partner can attack until he unfreezes.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Just as before, the Frozen aliment is mainly caused by Frost Piranhas and Ice Puffs. Also, sometimes, the stage itself will fire freezing mist at Mario causing him to freeze on contact. The stage also has the chance to freeze the partner, enemies, or even certain bosses. The Ice Storm item also has a chance to inflict the Frozen aliment on opponents and Mario must be wary of enemies that may be holding the item as well as the item cannot be guarded against.

Super Paper Mario[]

The Frozen ailment is mainly caused by Bonechill and his army. Whenever Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Bowser are frozen, the player must shake the Wii Remote until that character breaks from the ice.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

The Frozen ailment is actually only seen in the battle with Mizzter Blizzard in his Bowser's Snow Statue form. If Mario gets frozen by his Ice Breath attack, Mario cannot attack for a set amount of turns leaving himself open to attacks. Certain Thing Stickers such as the Shaved Ice Thing freeze all the enemies for a set amount of turns.

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership[]

The status effect makes its official Mario & Luigi franchise debut in this game, where it can be inflected if Mario and Luigi attack an enemy with the Jump or Hammer attack with the appropriate Battle Plug. This time, Frozen functions like "dizzy," but will be instantly cured if an attack strikes the target, although the target takes more damage than normal. A Mix Tornado with more cryokinetic balls can bestow this effect on enemies.

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, the status effect is called "Kōri" (written こおり in Hiragana and コオリ in Katakana), which means "Ice." In Spanish, it is called Congelado ("Frozen") in the original Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Super Paper Mario, although in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, its name is changed to Congelación, which refers to the process of freezing.
