Super Mario Mario & Luigi Mario Kart Yoshi Donkey Kong

Water Geysers, alternatively named Water Jets, Water Pillars, Water Springs, are springs of Water that occur from the water whether it be briefly or continuous. Water Geysers can be useful as the amount of water at the top of the spring is so insurmountable that it appears to be solid allowing Mario, Luigi, and others to walk across them. If jumped into, one will be able to swim in it until being pushed to the top of the spout by it's force. They are similar to both Sand Geysers and the hazardous Lava Plumes.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Princess Peach[]

Peach At Wavy Beach

Peach and Perry near a Water Geyser.

Water Geysers are first seen in Super Princess Peach. In this game, they are seen in some levels of Wavy Beach. In this game, they act as a forcefield, when landed on, Peach will be sprung to the top and won't be able to go beyond the Water Geyser. The spouting height of the Water Geyser can be temporarily lowered with the use of Peach's Cyclone powers allowing access to hidden collectables or the path forward however over time, the spouting level will rise back to it's original height.

Super Mario 3D Land[]

Waterspout Heights

Mario guiding an Arrow Platform to a Water Geyser.

Water Geysers appear again in Super Mario 3D Land in this game, they are less common mainly appearing in levels that feature Arrow Platforms. They will occasionally spring from the water below when an Arrow Platform is driven onto the Water Geyser, it will be sprung into the air. From here, it can be maneuvered onto the higher tracks which can be used to obtain Star Medals and other collectibles. Unlike most games, Water Geysers will not spring Mario (or Luigi) upward and the plumbers will instead phase right through them. Water Geysers are also seen in Special 2-3 despite the chasms of that level being composed mostly of lava.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Waterspout Paradise

Mario jumps across the Water Geysers to obtain some Coins and a Star Coin.

Water Geysers appear again in New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. In these games, Water Geysers are commonly found in various levels of Sparkling Waters most notably Water Geyser Beach. They are similar to Sand Geysers as they spring from the water and Mario and friends can walk across them. A Water Geyser can also be jumped in to be carried to the top of the Spout. Whenever jumping Cheep-Cheeps make contact with a Water Geyser, they will slide along the spout before descending. If Yoshi is hit by an enemy and runs into a Water Geyser, he will stop running after being hoisted to the Spout's top. Water Geysers are also seen during the boss fight with Larry Koopa, Larry typically uses them to his advantage during the battle.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Seaside Kingdom Paradise

The Water Geysers seen springing from the fountains in the Seaside Kingdom.

Water Geysers are seen yet again in Super Mario Odyssey In this game, they can be seen in the Seaside Kingdom. When one of the corks on each side of the Glass Tower of Bubblaine is pulled, a Water Geyser will begin to spring from the fountain hole. These Water Geysers are shown to decorate the Kingdom, they can also be used as a way to replenish the water for a Gushen while having captured one.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Paper Waterspout

A Water Geyser holding up a Comet Piece.

A Water Geyser is seen in Paper Mario: Sticker Star in Water's Edge Way. When Mario arrives at the Bowser Waterfall, a Water Geyser can be seen springing from the leftmost hole holding up the Comet Piece scrap (which was previously tossed by Kamek). Upon finding and spinning the Faucet (named "Tap" in the PAL Versions), the Bowser waterfall will stop releasing water and the Water Geyser (along with all the water levels) will recede allowing Mario to nab the Comet Piece scrap to restore the full Comet Piece. If Mario returns here after completing the level and using the Faucet, the Water Geyser will return but it won't hold anything. If Mario uses the Tap before obtaining the Comet Piece, the Water Geyser will be springing the Comet Piece again requiring Mario to turn off the Tap again.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]

Waterspout Airway

Water Geysers in the Airway.

Waterspout Airway DX

Water Geysers in the Airway as seen in the remake.

Water Geysers appear in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story as well as Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. In these games, they are primarily found in the Airway where they are seen holding up some of the platforms in the area. If Mario and Luigi jump on these platforms, the platform will fall causing the Water Geyser to sink under the plumbers' weight. Due to this, the Airway cannot be accessed properly for a large portion of the game. After Bowser defeats Blizzard Midbus, he can inhale some of his icy air which freezes up the Airway causing the Water Geysers to freeze solid allowing the plumbers to jump across the platforms without them sinking. Mario and Luigi will need to take advantage of both the platforms sinking and being frozen to traverse the Airway.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

Dreamy Waterspouts

Dreamy Luigi shining the area allowing Mario to utilize a Water Geyser.

Water Geysers are seen again in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team with a similar role to the previous game. This time, they are seen in various sections of Dreamy Mount Pajamaja however this time, they start out frozen solid rather than being active upon arrival. When Mario and Dreamy Luigi enter these rooms, they may sometimes need to use the platforms or change the level of the platforms to be able to cross the room. Dreamy Luigi can utilize the Luiginary Ice from the background and in the real world, Starlow can move Luigi's hand to the sauna button to heat up the area around Luigi to brighten the area removing it of the snow and ice, this causes the Water Geysers to activate, just as before, they sink upon standing on the platforms, Mario can either stand on the platforms to sink them or level them to reach higher platforms.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]

Waterspout Mania

Baby Mario and Baby Luigi approaching the last set of Water Geysers with Mario and Toadette not far behind, meanwhile, Yoshi and Bowser Jr. (along with Waluigi and Donkey Kong) maneuver around the Water Geysers in the Crystal Caves.

Water Geysers appear in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in the course Dino Dino Jungle. In this game, they can be found in the crystal caves and just before the finish line gushing from the ground in set patterns. If players make contact with a Water Geyser, they will be flipped high into the air (in the same way they would if hit by a Blue Spiny Shell or a Bob-omb). Water Geysers can only be avoided unless your under the effects of a Starman in which can you can phase right through them.

Mario Kart 7[]

Waterspout Jungle

Donkey Kong approaching the last set of Water Geysers.

In Mario Kart 7, Water Geysers appear in the returning Dino Dino Jungle. They function the same way they did previously (also with the same patterns) but players can also preform tricks from the busted earth where the Water Geysers gush from. Water Geysers once again flip players high into the air (unless they're under the effects of a Starman or Bullet Bill).

In Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]

Waterspout Waves

Yoshi crossing the Water Geysers.

Water Geysers are seen again in Yoshi's Woolly Woorld as well as Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. In these games, they commonly appear in beach-themed levels such as Hang Tongue!. They periodically spring up from the waters below allowing the Yoshis to cross to open seas. Enemies such as Shy Guys and Piranha Plants are also seen on the Water Geysers requiring Yoshi to beat them before progressing. In this game, Water Geysers also resemble Waves.

In Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D[]

Waterspout DK

DK and Diddy near several Water Geysers.

Water Geysers are seen in Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D in the new level Gushin' Geysers. In this game, Water Geysers will spring from the ground periodically springing Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong into the air when made contact with. Water Geysers can also hold up platforms. Some Water Geysers only pop up periodically, others tend to elevate their gushing levels and some are seen springing water at all times. The Fire Extinguishers in Music Madness also function slightly similarly to Water Geysers.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]

Waterspouts Wii U

Water Geysers as seen in Super Smash Bros..

Water Geysers are seen in the Mushroom Kingdom U stage of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, showing up randomly during a match. Players can jump on the Water Geysers to use as a high ground when up against opponents. In some cases, a Mega Urchin can be seen floating on a Water Geyser, these cannot be jumped on due to the large hazard.

Trivia[]

  • Water Geysers are among one of the few features/elements that change their role with games (in terms of being a hazard, platform, or simply a background element).
