For the Shy Guy variant, see Stretch (Shy Guy).

Stretches are recurring enemies in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Stretches are a variant of Boos attached to solid platforms. A Stretch can consist of either one or two Boos.

Behavior[]

Stretches commonly hide below flooring and poke their heads out periodically, damaging Mario or Luigi on contact. Stretches commonly appear as part of the ground, but can sometimes appear as a separate entity as well. Like regular Boos, Stretches are mostly invincible, and only a few attacks can defeat them.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Stretch SMB3 sprite

Stretches appear in several of the later fortress levels. Stretches pop their heads out periodically, and damage Mario or Luigi on contact. Stretches are normally invincible as they cannot be defeated using regular attacks, and only the effects of the Hammer Suit and the Starman can defeat them. Defeating a Stretch earns the player 100 points.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[]

Stretches appear in all three games. They can be created by placing a Boo just above a flooring or below a ceiling. This time, Stretches can only be defeated with the use of a Starman. Stretches have also been given modified looks for the Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U styles, in the latter two, they are also no longer attached to a white platform instead they appear to just be Boos that slide along the floor, Stretches are also less predictable than before as they pop their heads out more periodically. Giving a Super Mushroom to a Stretch will not enlarge it, instead, it will become a regular Big Boo. They are also simply referred to as "Boos" in all three of these games.

Super Mario Run[]

Stretches are enemies found in various Ghost House-themed levels. Their behavior is the same as it was in previous games and their design is based on their appearance in the New Super Mario Bros. U style in Super Mario Maker. Once again, the use of a Starman can destroy a Stretch.
