Spike Traps are a hazardous obstacle debuting in Super Mario Maker, they are orbs that have Spikes all around them, Spike Traps are typically found in large groups requiring some tactical manuevers to avoid. Spike Traps are also capable of floating as well in a similar fashion to Grinders. Just like regular Spikes, Spike Traps will power-down Mario if he touches them.

Spike Traps appear in Super Mario Maker as well as it's two sequels as placeable objects. Spike Traps can be placed in almost any theme of any style and act as obstacles to avoid (as a smaller alternative to the Grinders). Spike Traps can be placed along the ground or in the air, enemies can also walk along them however if Mario touches a Spike Trap, he powers-down or dies. Unlike most spiked hazards, Mario cannot safely Spin Jump on Spike Traps however Yoshi can walk along them safely. Mario however can only walk along them if he is under the effects of a Starman. In the underwater theme for the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, Spike Traps are replaced with Jelectros.

Spike Traps return in Super Mario Run this time being found in a few courses most notably in the Black Coin variations. Just as before, Spike Traps can be seen floating idly and will damage those who land on them or run into them from below or the sides, Spike Traps often guard Black Coins and other items and the use of a Star is often required to run along the Spike Traps, additionally, a Yoshi can easily run along the Spike Traps harmlessly (however the sides are still harmful to the Yoshis).
