Bony Beetles are a skeletal variant of Buzzy Beetle and a recurring enemy in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario World.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario World[]

Bony Beetles mostly appear in fortress and castle levels, with Vanilla Fortress being their level debut. Bony Beetles pace back and forth, occasionally ducking into their shells to expose their spikes. If Mario or Luigi jump on a Bony Beetle while its spikes are out, they take damage. If one of them jumps onto a Bony Beetle while its spikes are retracted, it breaks apart, only to quickly reform afterward, similarly to a Dry Bones. A Bony Beetle is not affected by Fire Mario's fireballs.
A Bony Beetle can be defeated by having Cape Mario or Luigi spin into it using their cape. Defeating a Bony Beetle earns the player 200 points.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Bony Beetles appear in the World-e levels Swinging Bars of Doom and Bowser's Last Stand. They look and act nearly the same way as in Super Mario World. However, their falling apart animation has been edited to no longer be exactly the same as the Super Mario World design of Dry Bones. Additionally, if it is on a block, it cannot be defeated by hitting it from below, unlike most enemies.
New Super Mario Bros. U[]
Bony Beetles reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U, except that they hide their spikes for only a short period of time. A while later, Bony Beetles then emerge from their shell.
In Paper Mario series[]
Paper Mario[]
Bony Beetles make a reappearance within the dark cave-like tunnels within the lower levels of Bowser's Castle. During battle, Bony Beetles bring out their spikes every time they are hit by a jump or hammer attack; the opposite if they already have their spikes out when hit.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]
Bony Beetles only appear in Rumble Volcano. They attack Mario with the Shell Toss move. They will always act like spiked enemies even sticking out their spikes as soon Mario makes a Jump attack. They must be taken down with any non-Jump stickers.
In Mario Party series[]
Mario Party: Island Tour[]
Bony Beetles appear on the Star-Crossed Skyway board. In the second and third Star Stages, a Bony Beetle gives out two Mini Ztars. When idle, Bony Beetle has its head out and its spines retracted, but when it first appears and when the character receives the Mini Ztars, it retracts its head into its shell and sticks out its spikes.
Super Mario Party[]
A Bony Beetle is among the enemy species to make a cameo in the minigame Absent Minded, where it is sometimes featured as a guess.
In Dr. Mario World[]
Bony Beetles appear as assistants.

"It's a Bony Beetle. They're bony Buzzy Beetles. ...Hence the name. Max HP: 8, Attack Power: 3, Defense Power: 4 It's tough to damage 'em. When their spikes are out, their attack power is 5. When they retract their spikes, take the opportunity to flip 'em over. After that, beating 'em will be a breeze." |
