Bayonetta (ベヨネッタ Beyonetta?, Bayonetta) (real name Cereza) is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series. She is the protagonist in the Bayonetta series.

Biography[]

Bayonetta was born in Vigrid from the forbidden union of a Lumen Sage called Father Balder and an Umbran Witch called Rosa: the Witch was imprisoned and the Sage exiled from his clan. Bayonetta's birth caused a rift between the formally peaceful clans and eventually led to them engaging in a war. Bayonetta became a black sheep among the Umbran Witches, and during the war, Jeanne, a former childhood friend and rival seals her away from the world while wiping her memory to protect her from those who would exploit her. For the next five hundred years, she is sealed in a coffin at the bottom of a lake. She is later rescued, at Father Balder's instructions. She goes in search of her forgotten past, heading for her old home of Vigrid while fighting the angelic forces of Paradiso on the way.

Appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. 4[]

Bayonetta appears in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable fighter and the last newcomer of the game. Her design is based on Bayonetta 2 and she has another design from Bayonetta.

According to Masahiro Sakurai, she was the winner of the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, being the highest-voted character in Europe and among the top 5 in North America, making her the overall #1 worldwide among realizable characters.

Bayonetta is currently placed 1st out of 55 characters on the tier list, putting her at the top of the S tier.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Bayonetta is a veteran in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She is classified as 63. Bayonetta was strongly nerfed from Super Smash Bros. 4.

Bayonetta appears in the World of Light cutscene. After Galeem unleashed its beams, Bayonetta successfully dodged the beams by performing Bat Within but returned into her normal form thus captured.

Trivia[]

  • Game developers planned Bayonetta alongside Palutena and Kirby to escape Galeem's light beams. However, they concluded it was contradictory that spirits with similar powers did not survive. Additionally, Bayonetta and Palutena were complex characters. Instead, Kirby escaped the light beams; he is available at the beginning of World of Light.
  • Bayonetta is the second Sega representative in the series, after Sonic the Hedgehog. The next is Joker.
  • Bayonetta is also the 2nd character to be featured in the Super Smash Bros series from a M-17 (Mature) rated game after Solid Snake and the next one being Joker.
  • She is the first third-party character to be female with the second being Kazooie.
  • In Bayonetta's titular series, she can wear two outfits based on Princess Peach and Daisy.
