A tell is a gameplay mechanic in every game of the Mario & Luigi series, first appearing in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Description[]

A tell is an indicator that enemies use when at least two Mario Bros. are in battle to relay which character they intend to attack during their turn. This way, the player can have the targeted Mario Bro react accordingly, by either dodging or doing a counterattack, depending on the move from the enemy. Because every enemy has a different tell, the player often has to figure it out themselves, except during a tutorial at the start of the game. Some enemies have a red or green color to indicate whether Mario or Luigi is the target, respectively, such as Noozes in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
