The Kings are a group of seven supporting characters who first appear and are mainly featured in Super Mario Bros. 3.

In the greater Mushroom World outside of the Mushroom Kingdom, there are seven Kings, each ruling one of the other kingdoms, accessed in order of Grass Land, Desert Land, Water Land, Giant Land, Sky Land, Ice Land, and lastly Pipe Land. The Koopa Troop of the Dark Land invaded these kingdoms, and each of the seven Koopalings stole a King's Magic Wand and turned them into a different creature.

To return a King back to normal, Mario or Luigi first have to enter his castle and the end of a world. Here, a distressed Toad states how it is really bad that the King had been transformed into a different creature and pleads Mario or Luigi to retrieve his Magic Wand. After hearing the Toad's message, Mario or Luigi have to do an airship level and defeat a Koopaling at the end to retrieve his Magic Wand.

In doing so, the King returns into his human shape, thanks Mario or Luigi for rescuing him, and delivers a letter from Princess Toadstool with a power-up item. The eighth and final world, Dark Land, is the only world to not feature a King, so the King in Pipe Land is the last one who must be returned to normal.

Transformations[]

The transformations differ from the original Super Mario Bros. 3 to both the Super Mario All-Stars remake and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. While most transformations in the original Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System versions are of a generic species, transformations in the remakes consist of a cameo appearance of a Mario character or species from a different game, a majority of which are from a different Super Mario series installment. Some of these transformations are the same species as its original iteration. Even upon being transformed, a King still has a crown on its head.

The Kings were made into standalone characters. Just as before, the Kings each rule over a kingdom, but not all of the kingdoms are retained from Super Mario Bros. 3:
