Bumpties, named Penguins in the Paper Mario games, are penguin-like creatures found in icy areas. They first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Bumpties in this game were blue, although they are also colored green and pink in Paper Mario.

In the Yoshi franchise[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Bumpties, being found in icy areas, most notably appear in World 5. Unlike most enemies, a Bumpty does not harm a Yoshi if it touches it but instead bounces him back, hence their name. Bumpties are one of the enemies that a Yoshi cannot swallow and convert into a Yoshi Egg.

Tetris Attack[]

In Tetris Attack, a Bumpty assists Dr. Freezegood in the Ice World, and he is the second ally whom Yoshi saves. Bumpty replaces Sharbet from the original Panel de Pon.

Yoshi Story[]

In Yoshi's Story, Bumpties act the same as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, although a difference is that a Yoshi is now able to eat one.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

In Yoshi's Island DS Bumpties once again appear in several of the icy levels, behaving similarly as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Baby Bowser can quickly defeat a Bumpty by spitting out a fireball at it.

Yoshi's Crafted World[]

Bumpty is an enemy in this game, first appearance in Chilly-Hot Isles. He also appears in Bert the Ball's boss fight, and one of the objectives is to throw one at Bert's back and make him fall.

In the Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario[]

Bumpties live in Shiver City, which is where Mario first encounters them. These Bumpties are allies to Mario. He meets a famous writer whose name is Herringway. At Peach's Castle, a small group of Bumpties is seen right before Bowser's arrival.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Bumpties are seen living in Poshley Heights. On the Excess Express, Mario meets a 'detective' named Pennington, who resides in the sixth room.

In Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Bumpties also appeared in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, exclusively in the World-e level Slip Slidin' Away. They act the same as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, from which their sprites are reused, albeit slightly brightened; their sprites are still slightly darker than in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.
