Bolts are an object which first appear in the arcade game Donkey Kong.

Bolts are objects that keep the platforms of 100m and similar locations intact.
In Donkey Kong[]
Bolts are objects that Mario has to destroy in 100m. There are eight orange bolts (six in the Game Boy version) that are worth 100 points each. Removing a bolt only requires Mario to either walk or jump across it. Removing a bolt also creates a gap that Fires cannot cross, and if a bolt is removed while a Fire is on top of it, the Fire becomes stuck over the gap. This allows Mario to safely jump over the Fire repeatedly to gain points.
Once Mario has walked over every bolt, the platforms supporting Donkey Kong collapse, ending the game.
In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis[]

On level B1 of DK's Hideout, Mini Marios have to remove bolts around the stage to defeat Donkey Kong, similarly to Mario in 100m. They do so by walking over, jumping across, or standing on top of a bolt, which then melts away and disappears.
