Yoshi
Not to be confused with Fangs, an attack in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Fangs are bats featured in the Yoshi platformers and Super Princess Peach, and their overall first appearance is in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

A Fang is a variant of a Swooper (as its Japanese name suggests) with a round body, usually dark purple or blue in color, pointed ears, and wings that are usually light-pink in color. In Yoshi's Crafted World, Fangs have purple wings.

Behavior[]

Fangs act almost identically to Swoopers. A Fang rests on the ceiling of a cave and then swoops at a Yoshi (or Princess Peach) as they approach. A Fang moves slowly, and its flight pattern involves it steadily flying up in a zigzag-like formation while traveling forward. Fangs leave a dashed line behind them as they fly along.

In Yoshi franchise[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]

Fang SMW2 sprite

Fangs are enemies, possibly serving as the replacement for Swoopers. They reside in the caves and swoop at Yoshi to try and knock Baby Mario off his back. Any attack can defeat them, be it a stomp, swallow, or an egg throw. They are first seen in What's Gusty Taste Like? in World 2 and appear commonly in cave levels from then.

Yoshi Touch & Go[]

Fang YT&G sprite

Fangs return as enemies, and unlike most appearances, Fangs are not just encountered in caves but also other environments such as jungles and fields. In cave areas, Fangs are found sleeping on the ceilings, but they otherwise always soar up and down in flight at varying intervals. If shot down with an egg or stomped, a Fang rewards two points, and encasing it in a bubble can yield a Blue Coin.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

Fang YIDS

Fangs are once again enemies commonly encountered in caves. They are very common in Six-Face Sal's Fort. Their behavior is essentially a combination of their behavior in the two previous games. Some Fangs are seen resting on the ceiling until Yoshi approaches and some are seen flying in the air as normal. Fangs are also in the Island Museum surprisingly placed in the Airborne Enemy Exhibit instead of the Subterranean Enemy Exhibit. Just as before, a Fang can be defeated from any attack.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Fangs return again as enemies which commonly appear in caves. Just as before, any attack can defeat them. Fangs were given a leader, Count Fang, which appears alongside his bodyguards, the Purple Fangs.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]

Fangs return as enemies, now being made out of wool. While flying, a Fang leaves long, purple dashed trails, similarly to a running stitch.

Yoshi's Crafted World[]

Fangs are enemies only encountered in two levels, Whistlestop Rails and Be Afraid of the Dark.

In Super Princess Peach[]

Fang SPP sprite

Fangs are enemies commonly encountered in Shriek Mansion, Fury Volcano, and Bowser's Villa. Fangs are first encountered in the level Shriek Mansion 3-4. Just as before, a Fang can be defeated from any attack. Fangs no longer rest on the ceilings, but rather just flying through the air as normal.

Fangs were given a Joy-imbued variant named Glad Fang, which has yellow wings.
