The Stomp^[1] (ストンピング, Sutonpingu^?, lit. "Stomping"), also known as Stomping^[2][3][4][5] (ストンピング^[6], Sutonpingu^?), is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a technique that involves the user performing a powerful stomp into the ground to destroy obstructions.

Description[]

When performing Stomp, the user goes into midair (either by jumping or running off a ledge), for then to slam directly downwards with one of their feet first, creating an aura field around them as they descend. Upon landing on the ground, the user releases a destructive shock-wave which causes damage to objects close to the user. The color of one's aura and the Stomp's shockwave depends on the user: Sonic's is blue, Shadow's is orange, the Avatar's is white, etc.

In gameplay, this move is useful for destroying enemies and obstacles such as Wooden Containers and weak bridges beneath the user, as well as pressing down on switches (both normal and oversized). It is also a useful tool if the player needs to reach the ground quickly.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Unleashed[]

The Stomp first appeared in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version and the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed as a part of Sonic the Hedgehog's moveset, which can only be used in the daytime levels. On both versions of the game, the move is referred to as Stomping^[2][3][4][5] (ストンピング^[6], Sutonpingu^?). For Sonic to perform the Stomp in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of the game, he has to possess the Stomping Shoes, obtained during his first visit to Holoska. Meanwhile, the Wii/PlayStation 2 version makes the move available immediately from the beginning, although Sonic will still receive a tutorial on how to do the Stomp upon entering Cool Edge.

The Stomp is especially effect against Mole Cannons, who can hide underground from most of Sonic's attacks. However, Egg Fighter: Shields can block the Stomp once and those equipped with Springs can even deflect it entirely. On the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, the Stomp is also essential when using giant switches which must be stomped on repeatedly in order to be activated and clearing obstacles.

To perform the Stomp in gameplay, the player must press the following buttons during a jump:

Sonic Colors[]

In both the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, the move is referred to as the Stomp for the first time.^[7][8] It also appears in the remaster, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, where it is referred to as the Stomp Attack. In every version of the game, the Stomp is one of Sonic's standard moves. On the Wii version and in Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the move is also used by Super Sonic and the Virtual Hedgehogs. It is also used by the Mii, but only in the Wii version.

In both versions of the original Sonic Colors and Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the Stomp creates bigger shockwaves than in Sonic Unleashed, and the move is often used to plow through stacks of Wooden Containers and Steel Containers. Also, should the player use the Stomp while underwater, the move can be cancelled by simply Double Jumping. Additionally, in the Sonic Simulator, the Stomp is useful for taking out shielded Egg Pawns with just one hit.

To perform the Stomp in gameplay, the player must press one of the following buttons while airborne:

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the move is referred to as the Stomp^[1] once more. On both versions of the game, the Stomp is only usable to Sonic. In the console/PC version of the game, Modern Super Sonic can use the move too. For Sonic to perform the Stomp in the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, he has to possess the Stomping Shoes, which he gains after defeating Biolizard. In the console/PC version of the game on the other hand, Modern Sonic can use the move from the beginning.

In the console/PC version of the game, the shockwaves the Stomp produces are virtually non-existent. However, if Modern Sonic is equipped with the Power Stomp Skill, the range of the shockwaves from the Stomp are increased, thus allowing Modern Sonic to damage enemies within a certain radius.

In the console/PC version, while the move is best used for dealing with obstacles such as breakable Containers, there are other gimmicks to use the move on, such as a weak bridge near the end of Green Hill Act 2 in order to access an alternate route, or on the magma footholds in Crisis City Act 2 to temporarily lower them and proceed through the Act. In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, the move is required in order to clear through the stacks of Containers that block certain routes in the remaining stages, Water Palace and Tropical Resort, but it can also be used on Springs and Spring Poles for a higher bounce.

In gameplay on the console/PC version of the game, the player has to press / while Modern Sonic is airborne to perform the Stomp. Noticeably, the Stomp cancels Modern Sonic's momentum, so even if the player still holds /, Sonic will not perform a Slide, which he did previously in Sonic Unleashed. In gameplay on the Nintendo 3DS version, on the other hand, the player has to press /Circle Pad down then while Modern Sonic is airborne to perform the Stomp.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the Stomp serves as one of Sonic's custom moves for the Homing Attack. When performing it, Sonic will curl up into a ball similar to a Bound Jump, but he will not home in on opponents and instead drop straight down. If used on an airborne opponent, the move will meteor smash them, potentially knocking them out if they are off the stage.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the move is referred to as the Stomp^[9] once more. In this game, the Stomp is a standard move used by Sonic, Super Sonic and the Avatar. Shadow is also able to perform it in the Episode Shadow DLC. Here, although the Stomp's shockwave is wider than it was in Sonic Generations, it adds nothing to the move's impact area. Therefore, the player should Stomp directly at the enemy in order to deal damage.

To perform the Stomp in gameplay, the player must press // while in midair.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, the Stomp^[10] makes an appearance as one of Sonic's basic moves.^[11][12] Much like in previous mainline games, the player can perform the move while in the mid-air by pressing //.^[10] A new addition to the move is that holding the button down will cause Sonic to on impact immediately jump into the air similarly to the bound jump but the height isn’t variable and will always go the length of a double jump, continuing to hold the button will repeat the move two more times ending like how the stomp normally does while blue energy is released that destroys objects and damages enemies close to Sonic.

The game also features separate Stomp Attack^[13][14] (ストンピングアタック^[15][16], Sutonpingu Atakku^?) as unlockable Skill. Pressing // during the combo will make Sonic perform the move like the regular Stomp, except it can strike down from above on to the enemy.^[13] Acquiring the Stomp Attack from Skills menu will cost 10 Skill Points for the player.^[14]

Sonic Dream Team[]

The Stomp was added into Sonic Dream Team in it's Powers update as an unlockable Power for all characters. It functions similarly to it's previous appearances. Acquiring the Stomp Power costs 90 Blue Coins and requires the player to reach Tier 4 in Tails' Challenges.

Card Stomp[]

The Card Stomp is a card-themed variation of the Stomp which can be performed by Amy Rose via using her Fortune Cards.

Heat Stomp[]

The Heat Stomp is a fire-themed variation of the Stomp which can be performed by Knuckles the Echidna.

Spike Stomp[]

The Spike Stomp is a variation of the Stomp which can be performed by Miles "Tails" Prower via transforming his blaster into a pile bunker.

Trivia[]

• In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Tails created the Stomping Shoes. He also mentions that the reason Sonic can stomp with them is because they are lighter than his normal shoes.
• In the early versions of Sonic Forces, at the start of Lost Valley, the player would originally suffer an instant defeat by using Stomp at the start. However, this glitch was patched in later versions.
• In Sonic Colors, Sonic uses a different animation for the Stomp (where a blue light engulfs Sonic) than in Sonic Unleashed.
• Super Sonic's Stomp color is blue in Sonic Colors, but in Sonic Generations his Stomp color is gold.
