Chikao Ōtsuka (大塚 周夫, Ōtsuka Chikao^?) was a veteran Japanese voice actor who did voice work for the Japanese version of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and its spin-offs. He is notable for being the Japanese voice of Dr. Eggman since Sonic Adventure up until his death.

History[]

Ōtsuka, from 2006 until his death, was represented by Aoni Production. He also had a son, Akio Ōtsuka, who is also a voice actor.

Ōtsuka died on 15 January 2015 due to an ischemic heart disease at the age of 85. He was succeeded by Kotaro Nakamura as Dr. Eggman's Japanese voice following his death, starting with Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, though archived recordings of Ōtsuka were still used for Eggman Nega's voice in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020). Additionally, Ōtsuka's portrayal of Eggman from Sonic Colors was used in the Japanese version of Sonic Colors: Ultimate, rather than recasting him with Nakamura.

• Coincidentally, Deem Bristow, who originally voiced Dr. Eggman in the English dub for the Sonic the Hedgehog series, died of a heart attack on the same day as Ōtsuka exactly ten years before.
