"What I'm Made of..." is a song by Crush 40, featured in Sonic Heroes during the final battle with Metal Overlord as Team Sonic. It was composed by Jun Senoue.

Legacy[]

The song received a remastering by Masahiro Fukuhara, labeled as 2007 Mix in True Blue: The Best of Sonic the Hedgehog. From this period on, this version is always featured in Crush 40's album.

The song was also used in Sonic and the Black Knight when the Medal of Sonic is equipped. It appears in Sonic Generations as an unlockable song. In Sonic Speed Simulator, the Neo Metal Sonic Boss Battle, along with its hardmode variant, uses it, and beating the boss after the Symphony Showdown event will unlock the song's Hidden Music Note for the music player. In Shadow Generations, a re-recorded version of this song is used for the new Metal Overlord boss fight.

Lyrics[]

I don’t care what you're thinkin' as you turn to me
'Cause what I have in my two hands
Is enough to set me free (set me free)
I can fight the feelin’ to resist it all the time
But when it's just too much to take
You sneak up from behind
Is it me
You say, you're looking for
Let me show you who I am and what I'm here for... (here for)
Heeeeeeeeeeeey!
Try to reach inside of me
Try to drain my energy
Let me show you just what I'm made of!
Simple curiosity, try to take a bite of me
Let me show you just what I'm made of now!
Like a million faces, I've recognized them all
And one by one they've all become
A number as they fall (as they fall)
In the face of reason, I can take no more
One by one they've all become
A black mark on the floor
Is it me (Is it me)
You say (You say), you're looking for
Let me show you who I am and what I have in store (in store)
Hey! Hey! Yeaaah!
Try to reach inside of me
Try to drain my energy
Let me show you just what I'm made of!
Simple curiosity, try to take a bite of me
Let me show you just what I'm made of now!
You can take another life long try
You can take another try
Hey!
[Guitar solo]
Yeaaah!
Try to reach inside of me
Try to drain my energy
Let me show you just what I'm made of!
Simple curiosity, try to take a bite of me
Let me show you just what I'm made of now...
Try to reach inside of me (Let me show you what I'm made of!)
Try to drain my energy (Let me show you what I'm made of!)
Let me show you just what I'm made of!

Connection to the boss/characters[]

The song can be interpreted from two perspectives. Sonic's and Metal Sonic's, conveying a double meaning.

  • I don't care what you're thinking as you turn to me - Sonic not caring about Metal Sonic and his reasons for fighting him.
  • Try to drain my energy! - Metal Sonic copying the "energy" of the other characters to make himself invincible.
  • You can take another life-long try - Sonic welcoming any future challenges from Metal Sonic.
  • But when it's just too much to take, you sneak up from behind - Metal Sonic being revealed as the true villain or Metal Sonic sneaking around, pretending to be Eggman to copy everyone else's data.
  • ’Cause what I have in my two hands is enough to set me free - Sonic has enough power to defeat Metal Sonic despite his copying abilities. On Metal Sonic's perspective, this line refers to him transforming himself with his very own two hands, into a monster as an attempt to set himself free from Sonic's shadow.
  • Let me show you just what I'm made of - Metal telling Team Sonic to try and fight him, as he is no longer afraid of anything anymore
  • Like a million faces, I've recognized them all - The numerous variety of enemies Sonic and his friends have fought.
  • Let me show you who I am and what I have in store - Metal taunting Team Sonic with his newfound abilities

Trivia[]

  • Johnny Gioeli said in an interview that "What I'm Made of..." was the song he had the most fun in performing. Jun Senoue has expressed similar feelings.[1]
  • An unused instrumental was found in Sonic Speed Simulator. In the Super Neo Metal Overlord event, the Neo Metal Sonic Boss Battle changed to this version, while the original vocal version began to be used for the then-new Super Neo Metal Sonic Boss Battle.
