The Spider (スパイダー Supaidā?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a spider-like Guardian that dwells on Chaos Island.

In The Final Horizon, an enhanced variant called Spider+ appears on Ouranos Island.

Appearance[]

The Spider closely matches its namesake in appearance, though with only four legs surrounding its central head-body rather than eight. Its whole black chassis is covered in red spikes.

History[]

Spider is one of many types of Guardians constructed by the Ancients of the Starfall Islands to fight against the Ancients' true enemy. The Ancients' civilization eventually collapsed, and the Spider was sealed away along with the other guardians.

Sonic Frontiers[]

Sonic the Hedgehog can first encounter the Spider on Chaos Island.

Powers and abilities[]

Spider[]

Most of the Spider's body is shielded from Sonic's attacks, including all of its vulnerable points on its legs and head. Its whole body is immensely strong, capable of breaking rocks away from the volcanic ground of Chaos Island with a single stomp, and a shake of its head can send Sonic rocketing into the sky.

Spider+[]

Spider+'s whole body is immensely strong, like its original counterpart. The only difference is that its legs are no longer vulnerable.

Weakness[]

A Cyloop (or Quick Cyloop) can disable the shields on the Spider's legs, allowing him to slow the creature down and access its head. Sonic can also remove its head shielding by skydiving through blue glowing rings.

Spider[]

Spider skydive

Sonic having been launched far above Chaos Island by the Spider.

When Sonic engages the Spider, it will move toward him and attempt to stomp on him with its powerful legs. After a stomp, its legs will briefly become stuck in the ground, allowing Sonic a chance to use the Cyloop to break its leg shields (Or just attack the legs directly with Quick Cyloop).

After the shielding on all four legs has been disabled, Sonic can attack the Spider's head. However, if the head is still shielded, the Spider will throw its head upwards, launching Sonic into the sky and initiating a skydive. While skydiving, Sonic must move through as many blue rings as possible while avoiding bombs, laser fields and Cyclones; if enough blue rings are collected, Sonic can then attack the Spider's head. If more blue rings are still needed, the Spider will once again launch Sonic into the air, forcing him to collect the additional rings.

Spider+[]

When the player engages the Spider+, unlike its original counterpart, Spider fires waves of spike-shaped missiles to attack, with some of them zero in on the player. During the battle Spike Bombs will also spawn around Spider.

To break the shield on the head, the player needs to use the Spike Bomb by performing Cyloop or other variants (except Quick Cyloop, as the bombs cannot be targeted) on those Bombs. Spike Bombs caught in the updraft will be launched towards Spider+'s head. Three bombs are required to break the shield, and after this Spider+ is down, with the head open for attack. Repeat the progress until Spider+ is defeated. Alternatively, when the head is vulnerable, the player can Cyloop the head three times allowing a one-hit kill with any damaging move.

Trivia[]

  • In Sonic Frontiers: Digital Art Book with Mini Digital Soundtrack, concept art for a "regular" Spider is featured (with a color scheme resembling that of the regular Soldiers), along with concept art for purple, red, white and gold variants, each with different arrangements of armor and spikes. Curiously, while the version of the Spider seen in-game has the red variant's coloration, it has the armor shape of the white variant.
    • Although the other variants of the Spider do not appear in the Sonic Frontiers base game, an unused version of Spider does appear in a CGI sequence in the game's Showdown Trailer, battling Sonic on Kronos Island
    • A white variant does finally appear in The Final Horizon as "Spider+", though it retains the exact same armor shape as the basic Spider.
