Ouranos Island

Ouranos Island (ウラノス島 Uranosu-tō?) is the fifth and final Open-Zone area in Sonic Frontiers. It is one of the four[1] Starfall Islands, featuring a similar appearance to Kronos Island. This island also serves as the main setting for the "Another Story" campaign.

Description[]

Ouranos Island is a large island which aesthetically looks identical to Kronos and Rhea Islands, sharing the green and sometimes rocky landscape. The island is also filled with ancient ruins, such as a temple which holds the White Chaos Emerald Vault and Portals which connect to Cyber Space. Some areas of Ouranos Island are also blocked by a Cyber-like barrier, similarly to how Kronos and Rhea are blocked by a similar looking wall from one another.

Akin to previous islands, the inhabitants of this island are the Kocos and the enemies, which include the six Guardian types.

History[]

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, after Sonic was saved by his friends from the Cyber corruption on Rhea Island, the hedgehog got teleported to Ouranos Island, in order to find the Chaos Emeralds once more. Across his journey for the Emeralds, Sonic encountered Sage, who informed him about the history of the Ancients, such as the origins of the Kocos or the role of the Chaos Emeralds in their society.

At some point, the two met near a giant statue, which Sage believed that by powering the statue using a starting device, Sonic would be able to progress. After unlocking and completing the puzzle accessed via the device, the statue created a bridge to the isolated island. While congratulating Sage, Sonic realized that he only recently learned her name, even though they fought many times since his arrival on the Starfall Islands. Sage told him that her name held no meaning, but Sonic disagreed, saying that Dr. Eggman gave her this name for a reason, and that the doctor cared about her in his own way.

Later, after claiming five of the Chaos Emeralds, the two found themselves needing to open an Ancient gate, since a Chaos Emerald Vault was located behind the door. After using his powers and completing another puzzle, Sonic would claim the White Chaos Emerald. With only one Emerald missing, the blue hedgehog was approached by Sage and Dr. Eggman, the latter having found the last Chaos Emerald. After turning into Super Sonic, he battled the last Titan, Supreme.

After the Titan was defeated, The End retreated into space to regain its true form. Having to leave the doctor, Sage took control of Supreme and fly with Super Sonic into the sky. In order to stop The End, Sage sacrificed herself, telling Sonic to look after her father. As Amy, Tails and Knuckles returned to the regular world, Super Sonic landed near them, relinquishing the Chaos Emeralds. Meanwhile, while watching the starfall, Dr. Eggman commemorated Sage.

The Final Horizon[]

In The Final Horizon, shortly after Sonic arrived on Ouranos Island, Sage interrupted Sonic's progress to inform him of an alternate plan that could potentially provide a better outcome. She told him that by returning the cyber corruption to his body, she could restore the physical forms of his friends, and then by subsequently challenging the five Trials of the Masters, Sonic could gain the ability to transform the cyber corruption into power. Sonic agreed to this plan, and Sage restored Amy, Tails and Knuckles while temporarily stabilizing Sonic's cyber corruption to prevent him from succumbing to its effects. Sonic informed his friends of the plan, and deployed them alongside Eggman to search for the Chaos Emeralds in his stead while he took on the Trials.

Amy, Tails and Knuckles spread out across the island to gather the Emeralds. However, they soon discovered that the Kocos had detected the imminent release of The End and secured the Emeralds with Ancient technology, meaning that the Chaos Emerald Vaults were now empty and the Emeralds had been sequestered to more remote locations. Amy and Knuckles split up to locate the Emeralds, while Tails hacked the Koco Devices guarding the Emeralds to release their protective shields. The trio managed to secure six of the seven Emeralds, but their bodies soon began to succumb to cyber corruption due to extended interaction with Cyber Space.

Meanwhile, Sonic climbed the five Trial Towers located throughout Ouranos Island, using Lookout Kocos to unlock them. Atop each of the first four Towers was a Master Koco housing the spirit of an Ancient who piloted one of the fallen Titans, who each challenged Sonic to a combat test to prove his worthiness. After Sonic proved himself to the four pilots, he ascended the fifth Tower and met the Master King Koco, who housed the spirit of the leader of the Ancients. The Master King Koco challenged Sonic to one last test by teaching him the Perfect Parry, and upon doing so, Sonic gained his blessing and the power to harness the cyber corruption.

Sonic, having overcome the corruption, reunited with his friends and Eggman, who gave him the seven Emeralds. Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and subsequently defeated Supreme. After The End was released from Supreme's body, The End hijacked the fallen Supreme, corrupting it and transforming it into its avatar. Sonic responded by invoking his new powers, transforming into the even stronger Super Sonic 2. Sonic weakened Supreme and used the Cyloop to steal its gun, which was subsequently commandeered by Eggman with Sage and Sonic's friends protecting him. After Sonic repelled Supreme and rendered The End vulnerable, Sonic and Eggman teamed up to deal the final blow, with Sonic overloading Super Sonic 2 while Eggman fired him at The End from Supreme's gun. Sonic successfully inflicted the final blow, destroying both Supreme and The End, but lost his Super Sonic 2 form. As Amy, Tails and Knuckles were restored to the real world, a beaten and battered Sonic descended from space and reversed his Super form, scattering the Emeralds once more. Dr. Eggman and Sage shared a moment together and decided to move forward to the future.

Gameplay[]

Ouranos Island has a rather different gameplay than the previous islands, having all Chaos Emeralds locked in Chaos Emerald Vaults, save for the purple one, which is unlocked via a cutscene after claiming the other six Emeralds. The number of Cyber Space stages and Guardians has also increased, from 7 to 9 stages, respectively from 4 to 6 Guardian models. The themes of the Cyber Space stages include Green Hill, Chemical Plant and Eternal Highway.

Similarly to Rhea Island, there is no character needed to be freed from Cyber Space, however, the player is still required to collect Memory Token in order to interact with Sage, and thus progressing through the story. The island includes three Island Mysteries, two of them being required to be completed in order to progress, and one optional Island Mystery. There is also no Story Quests.

Similarly to the first three Starfall Islands, in order to unlock the entire map, the player has to complete all Challenges. On this island, there are 26 Challenges, ranging from using the Target sphere, the Ancient light panels and the Mirrors, among many other Challenge types. Once a Challenge is completed, the player will be rewarded with a Seed, and once all 26 are completed, Fast travel to any Portal will be unlocked.

Overview[]

On Ouranos Island, the player has to collect Vault Keys from Cyber Space stages and/or Fishing Spots in order to unlock the blue, red, green, cyan and yellow Chaos Emerald Vaults. Though, it should be noted that the Green Chaos Emerald Vault is located on an isolated island, which the player can access only after completing the first Hacking Mission.

Once the player collected enough Memory Tokens and the five Chaos Emeralds, the second Hacking Mission will be unlocked, which, once completed, will open an Ancient gate, revealing the white Chaos Emerald Vault. After claiming the sixth Emerald, a cutscene will play, where Dr. Eggman will give Sonic the last Chaos Emerald, thus allowing him to transform into Super Sonic and take down Supreme, and, if playing on Hard Mode, The End.

Trivia[]

  • Ouranos Island was originally intended to be physically connected to Kronos and Rhea Island, but was separated due to playtesters deeming the combined map too large and boring.[2]
    • Because of this, Kronos and Rhea's outline can be seen in the water surrounding Ouranos if the player is at a high point of the island. Likewise, Ouranos' outline can be seen in the water on Kronos and Rhea.
    • In the files of the Nintendo Switch version of Sonic Frontiers, a height map is present for a version of Kronos and Rhea which is physically connected to Ouranos. This unused map is seen in the footage from Sonic Frontiers's announcement trailer.
    • Despite this, Egg Memo 7 still states that there are only three Starfall Islands, possibly a result of Ouranos still being considered part of Kronos and Rhea, or the line being recorded before the separation was made.
    • However, in The Final Horizon, Knuckles and Eggman state that there's four islands, instead of three, suggesting that Ouranos Island is, indeed, split from Kronos and Rhea.[3][1]
  • Ouranos Island is the only island to contain more than seven Cyber Space stages.
  • Ouranos Island has the most Guardians out of every island in the game.
  • At one point where Sonic is talking to Sage, he says "Let's do it to it!" which is his catchphrase that originated from the Sonic the Hedgehog television series, as well as the Archie comic series.
    • The catchphrase "Let's do it to it" would later be said again by him in Sonic Dream Team.
SonicFrontiers - Supreme Area (Battle Rush)

The area where Supreme is located.

  • Ouranos Island is the only island in which it is impossible to pass through an invisible barrier, since the barrier itself is dome-shaped, unlike Kronos Island and Rhea Island, where the barrier is a huge wall.
    • However, if the player decides to explore the same area in Battle Rush, the barrier is removed instead.
    • In The Final Horizon, the barrier is removed as well, allowing the player to explore the area.
