The Skill Piece[1] (スキルピース[2] Sukiru Pīsu?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are collectable items dropped by enemies that can grant Skill Points after collecting certain amount of them to acquire additional Skills.

Description[]

Skill Pieces are simple diamond shaped items with sharp edges and single vertical line going through the hole. Once being dropped by defeated enemy, they are seen floating on the ground's surface while rotating at one place. When moving quickly into the in-game HUD, they're shown leaving a trail of diamond patterns behind them. Depending on who the character the player choose, the Skill Pieces will match the color of them; Cyan for Sonic, pink for Amy, red for Knuckles, and yellow for Tails.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Skill Pieces are collectible items found in the Open Zone areas. When the player defeats an enemy each time, small group of five Skill Pieces are dropped to the ground to be collected. The player has to be close enough to obtain them, while some of Skill Pieces can be also collected in the mid-air right after defeating the enemy.

Small HUD on the bottom right corner displays the increasing gauge around the Skill Point number based on how many Skill Pieces has been obtained at that point. Each single Skill Piece is worth of 20 points on the gauge and for the first level up, it takes the amount of 600 points (30 Skill Pieces) to receive one Skill Point at a time.[1] As the player has enough of Skill Points, additional Skills in the Skills menu become available for the player to be acquired.[3] Each Skill is worth of different amount of Skill Points. When equipped with the Air Trick Skill, the player can earn extra Skill Pieces after successfully performing the move in the mid-air.[4] It is also possible to find groups of ten Skill Pieces placed inside Steel Containers, breakable objects or under the Open Zone's terrain in unexpected spots, which the player can reveal popping up by successfully performing the Cyloop.

The player can also buy piles of 50 Skill Pieces by trading Treasure Tokens or Gold Cards received in the Fishing Spot minigame hosted by Big the Cat. Each pile of Skill Pieces costs only one Treasure Token when chosen in the "Trade Tokens" store. If the player pre-ordered Standard Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition of the game with Adventurer's Treasure Box bonus, Sonic would automatically have 500 Skill Pieces at the start of the game.[5]

In The Final Horizon, Skill Pieces can be collected by Amy, Knuckles and Tails, with each their respective color. They can be given by a special type of Koco, known as the Skill Piece Koco. Additionally, they can also be found by breaking objects.

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

In Sonic Speed Simulator, the player can gain Skill Pieces by exchanging their level and speed through Rebirth. Skill Pieces are used to upgrade stats, such as gaining more Experience Points from Chaos Orbs, collecting more Rings for more currency, and dealing more damage at enemies and bosses.
