The Rhinoliner (リノライナー[1] Rinorainā?), also known as the Rhyno Liner[2] and Rhino Liner,[3] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, rhinoceros-based Badnik that was created by Dr. Eggman. During the Neo Metal Sonic incident, the Rhinoliners were stationed in the doctor's frontline base in Bullet Station and its outskirts.[1]

Appearance[]

Based on rhinoceroses, the Rhinoliners possess turquoise armor, making them look like the earlier Rhinotanks. They are bulky robot models, about as tall as Sonic, with motor engines and cannons on their backs, golden spikes and horn, cartoonish eyes with red pupils, and silver ears. At the bottom, they have two small wheels that allow them to grind on rails.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Heroes[]

In Sonic Heroes, the Rhinoliners are found in the following stages for the following teams:

Team Stage(s) Boss(es)
Sonic Rail Canyon Bullet Station Mystic Mansion Egg Albatross Robot Storm
Dark N/A
Rose N/A N/A
Chaotix

In gameplay, the Rhinoliners are sporadically found in grinding sections, always grinding on rails. Here, they can attack the player by dropping iron balls that can damage the characters. They can also perform the Grind Step to switch rails. Despite their intimidating size, the Rhinoliners are physically weak and can be destroyed with most attacks; in terms of specific attacks, it takes two Homing Attacks to be destroyed if the Speed character is at Level 0 (or one hit, if the Speed character has at least one blue Power Core), one Thunder Shoot (requires the Fly character needs at least two yellow Power Cores to destroy, otherwise Thunder Shoot does not actually damage the Rhinoliner but will disable it from moving temporarily), while any Power attack (whether the Power character has any red Power Cores or not) can destroy it in one hit. They will self-detonate as soon as they reach the end of the rail they are grinding on.

Sonic Rivals 2[]

In Sonic Rivals 2, the Rhinoliner appears on one of the collectible cards:

Shadow Generations[]

The Rhinoliners are featured as enemies in Shadow Generations, appearing in the grinding sections of both Act 1 and Act 2 of Rail Canyon. Here, most Rhinoliners encountered behave identically to their original counterparts from Sonic Heroes, though some of them can hurl iron balls to destroy Grind Rails. Just after the Doom Zone in Rail Canyon Act 1, one Rhinoliner can trigger a track switch to turn around and charge at the player in an attempt to damage them. In addition, the Rhinoliners now twirl around when jumping across to other rails. Like in their debut, the Rhinoliners are rather physically weak and can be easily destroyed by one Homing Attack.

Powers and abilities[]

The Rhinoliners can grind at incredibly high speeds. They can also drop iron balls, due to being equipped with a cannon on their back.

Trivia[]

  • When playing the Extra Missions of Team Dark's versions of Rail Canyon and Bullet Station, the self-detonations of the Rhinoliners also count as an enemy being defeated towards the mission's completion.
