Strider[1] (ストライダー[2] Sutoraidā?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a tall, tower-like Guardian that dwells on Ares Island.

Appearance[]

The Strider is a giant red and grey robot that towers over the surrounding landscape. It has four legs, that bare resemblance to a Water Strider, connected to a tall central tower. Under the center tower is a set of movable red and white monitors resembling eyeballs. Suspended in air just bellow the eyes are three grind rails. The tower has several metal shapes moving on it, similar to a garden wind spinner. The top of the tower has a several thin rectangular shapes spinning around what appears to be a power source. It has arrows on its two horizontal ends, similar to that of a weather vane.

History[]

Sonic Frontiers[]

The Strider was constructed by the Ancients as one of the many Guardians set to protect the Starfall Islands. Stationed in several spots on Ares Island, it remained functional thousands of years after its creators' demise, ready to attack any intruders who encounter it. Sonic the Hedgehog encountered two Strider units during his exploration of Ares Island, having the option of battling them for their Portal Gear.

Powers and abilities[]

The Strider can construct floating circular Grind Rails from red rings of energy it sends towards the player. It can also produce red bolts of electricity that it can move around itself in a circle over the rails. Furthermore, it can produce fiery energy balls that can track down the player on rails.

Weaknesses[]

The Strider is immobile and relies on intruders who can grind rails for it too eliminate them. Strider's weak spot is the core unit located at the bottom of its trunk.

Battle[]

Strider is an optional boss that can be fought in the Ares Island.[1]

Boss guide[]

When the battle begins, the player cannot reach the Strider directly. Instead, they must wait for it to unleash a series of red rings of electricity that when stabilize, turn into grinding rails. The player must jump into the closest rail to them once it stabilizes (as to avoid getting damaged by the electricity), and complete a circle over the rail. This process of completing a circle over the rail is illustrated by the rail turning light blue in Sonic's wake. When a full circle is completed, the rail turns white and the player will move up to the next rail above them and must repeat the same process. Once done, the player will move up to a series of adjacent rails forming a circle around the Strider.

There, the player must circle around the Strider on each of the adjacent rails in the same way as before. However, in order to turn each rail light blue and then white (when the circuit is completed), this time the player must start looping from a light blue strip located on each rail in order for the rail to turn blue in Sonic's wake. While doing so, the player must avoid getting in contact of the red bolt of electricity the Strider sends over a particular rail by jumping or Grind Stepping onto an adjacent rail. If the player leaves a rail that has not turned white (not circuit completed) yet, when the player returns to that rail, they will not be able to continue turning the rail blue unless they start from the blue section of the rail. When the player turns all the rails white, the Strider will open up a platform for the player to use in order to get near the Strider's body and attack it directly. Once on the platform, the Strider will charge up a laser attack, but the player has a plenty of time to attack its main body and disable its attack.

If the player does not manage to finish the Strider on the platform, the Strider will send the player back to the ground, then it follows this up by sending another series of gradually-higher grinding rails. The player must do the same process again and complete a circuit over each of these rails in order to advance up and finally reach the series of adjacent rails circling around the Strider again. The fight here is the same as before, but if the Health Gauge of the Strider is half or below, the Strider will use green, orange and purple fireballs to attack the player by following them on the rail instead of firing the bolt of electricity. The green fireballs are slow, while the orange and purple ones are faster. The purple one can also follow the player even when they switch rails. However, they all disappear after a while and the Strider must regenerate them again. Avoiding these obstacles and completing a circuit over each of the rails, will allow the player to fight the Strider directly again and destroy it.

Once the Strider is destroyed, it leaves a Portal Gear behind.
