The Type-W (タイプ-W Taipu-W?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Board-type Extreme Gear and Wave the Swallow's personal choice and her default Extreme Gear. It is one of the first Extreme Gear available in every game in the Sonic Riders series.

The Type-W is a part of the Babylon Rogues' own unique series of Extreme Gear that Wave has constructed and customized herself. The Type-W is an extremely exquisite piece of machinery and a prime example of Wave's skills as an Extreme Gear mechanic.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Riders series[]

Sonic Riders[]

Wave comes from a family of riders, so it's no surprise that she's a pro. When riding her special Type-W Board, created for Flight Type Babylon characters, Wave flies high above the competition.

The Type-W, from Sonic Riders.

The Type-W first appeared in Sonic Riders. According to its profile, it is a standard Extreme Gear for the Babylon Rogues. Wave specifically made it for the Flight Type. It is only useable to Wave in this game.

The Type-W in Sonic Riders is designed as a pink, board-shaped Extreme Gear with purple markings. It also has a tad of white in the back, a salmon-colored pad on the top, and two foot prints facing away from one another.

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders, the Type-W is well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics, an average rate of fuel-consumption and is suited for general riding.

Like most other character exclusive Extreme Gears, the Type-W does not possess any unique abilities of its own.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]

Wave's own hand-designed gear. Its ultra-compacted body stands as proof of her engineering genius.

Description, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

The Type-W made its return in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. According to its profile, it is hand-designed by Wave and possesses an ultra-compact body to contain more mechanical functions than a regular Extreme Gear. It is only useable to Wave in normal races, but is usable to all characters (except Dr. Eggman) in Survival Relay.

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, the Type-W received a noticeable redesign. In this game, its shape resembles very much that of an arrowhead, while keeping a distinct board shape, though, like most other Board types in the game, it is much thicker than the regular Board types in Sonic Riders. It is mostly colored white, with pink streaks running across it and has two light purple, circular foot pads on the top central surface. It also has what appears to be hover units at the mid-section where it turns inward.

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, the Type-W is well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics and is suited for general riding. Like most other character-exclusive Extreme Gears, the Type-W does not possess any unique abilities of its own.

Wave crafted this unique build exclusively for herself. Her high standards can be seen in its design and performance.

Description, Sonic Free Riders

The Type-W made another reappearance in Sonic Free Riders. According to its profile, Wave crafted it exclusively for herself, with its design and performance reflecting Wave's high standards for Extreme Gear mechanics. It is only useable to Wave in normal races, but is usable to all characters (except Dr. Eggman and Vector) in Relay Race.

In Sonic Free Riders, the Type-W received a new redesign. In this game, the Type-W returned to having a more board-like shape, like the one it had in Sonic Riders. It is mainly colored purple, with white accents on the front and rear and a smaller red recess on the front, along with yellow markings on the top surface.

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Free Riders, the Type-W is, like in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, well-balanced in its attributes with average stats and is suited for general riding.

Like in the previous titles, the Type-W possesses no unique abilities of its own, but it can be equipped to two Gear Parts.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle[]

In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Wave can be seen riding her Type-W during the game's races instead of running/flying like most other characters. In this game, the Type-W possesses its design from Sonic Free Riders.

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

The Type-W makes an apperance in Sonic Speed Simulator as Wave the Swallow's personal extreme gear - though it may be used by any character in the game. The Type-W currently has two types - the Type-W hoverboard which is based on the board's design from Sonic Free Riders, and the Classic Type-W which is based on its apperance from Sonic Riders.

The normal Type-W can be acquired as part of the "Wave Racing" event and requires the player to defeat Jet the Hawk five times in the Metal City Race. The Type-W has an in-game rarity of exotic.

The Classic Type-W can be acquired from the "Metal City" event and is obtained by gathering 750 Race Tickets. The Classic Type-W has an in game rarity of exotic.

in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Type-W appears as Wave the Swallow's personal Extreme Gear, which she always has with her. IDW Publishing[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, having targeted the Mineral Museum in Spiral Hill Village, which held valuable minerals, Wave used her Type-W to plunder the Mineral Museum and escape back to the blimp with the spoils.[1]

Having accepted the task of claiming Master Zik's Chaos Emerald, Wave rode the Type-W through a portal provided by Tails and Dr. Eggman's Multi-Portal Generator to Zik's location from Angel Island with her team. When Wave and her team confronted Zik though, the latter used his powers to take control of the Type-W and the team's other Extreme Gear. Zik proceeded to use the Type-W to attack the Babylon Rogues until Jet knocked him down.[2] The Type-W was subsequently lost to the incoming Zombot horde, leaving Wave stranded with her team.[3]

Merchandise[]

Jazwares produced a 3” Wave The Swallow faction figure with her Type-W Board.
