When approaching a wall, use Homing Attack with me as leader. Press the A Button while facing it to perform Triangle Jump. Use the Control Stick to adjust the jump angle.

Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes (Nintendo GameCube)

The Triangle Jump[1] (三角跳び Sankaku Tobi?) is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. When performing this move, the user jumps between adjacent walls.

Description[]

This move is similar to the Wall Jump maneuver, except that the user can only move horizontally across the walls. When approaching two walls that are close to one another, the user launches a Homing Attack at the wall to grab onto it. The user can then jump directly horizontally from one wall to another. Depending on the user's inherent abilities, the user can either continuously hang onto the wall or even run along it.

The Triangle Jump is primarily used to cross over large gaps or bottomless pits. By performing the Triangle Jump on closely placed adjacent walls above such gaps while moving forwards, the player can cross over them. However, it cannot be used on walls that are too far apart, and is as such restricted to exclusive areas designed for its usage.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Heroes[]

The Triangle Jump first appeared in Sonic Heroes, where it is a Speed Formation maneuver used by Sonic the Hedgehog on Team Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog on Team Dark, Amy Rose/Amy on Team Rose, and Espio the Chameleon on Team Chaotix. In this game, when Sonic and Shadow use the Triangle Jump, they can only cling to the wall they jump onto for a short time before falling off, while Espio can cling to the wall on for an unlimited amount of time.

To perform the Triangle Jump in gameplay, the selected team has to be in Speed Formation. The player then has to launch the Jump Dash toward the wall to grab onto it and press A/Cross/XboxA to jump between the walls. By moving forwards or backwards while jumping, the player can jump between the walls. If an enemy is touched while using the Triangle Jump, it receives the same amount of damage the speed character can deal without a Power Core, meaning that the damage dealt depends on the enemy.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

The Triangle Jump later reappeared in Shadow the Hedgehog, where it was only used by Shadow. In this game, while Shadow can only cling to the wall the player has used Triangle Jump on briefly, he is also able to move around on the wall he has grabbed onto, although only for a short time. Furthermore, upon reaching the end of two adjacent walls, the player will not Jump Dash straight to the other wall like in Sonic Heroes, but will launch themselves a short distance forwards.

Performing the Triangle Jump in gameplay in this game is the same as in Sonic Heroes, although to make Shadow walk on the walls he has jumped onto, the player has to use the movement controls.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Rumble[]

Within Sonic Rumble, the Triangle Jump is a move that is usable by all playable characters in Seaside Hill Run.

Trivia[]

  • During the development of Sonic Heroes, Amy Rose was originally able to perform the Triangle Jump. However, she had the move revoked from her skillset in the final game, although it still exists in the game's files. Since Amy does not have her own wall cling animation for the Triangle Jump, Amy will have her running animation loaded to prevent the game from crashing.
