The Cacophonic Conch, also known as the Cacophonous Conch,[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a very rare type of conch shell that acts as a natural inhibitor to Zeti powers.

Description[]

Appearance[]

As implied by its name, the Cacophonic Conch closely resembles a real-life musical instrument conch. It is very long, with long pointy spikes on the outer surface and is colored dark purple. Also, its opening glows red.

Powers and traits[]

When blown into, the Cacophonic Conch glows red and gives off a low-pitched sound, which allows the user to inhibit or neutralize the powers of nearby Zeti, including their ability to manipulate magnetic fields. The effect of the Cacophonic Conch is also very excruciating to Zeti, causing them great pain when hearing its sounds.

History[]

Sonic Lost World[]

In the Wii U version, PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, Dr. Eggman obtained a Cacophonic Conch. With it, he was able to force the Deadly Six into serving him.

When Dr. Eggman chided the Deadly Six for collecting "underwhelming" Animals, Zavok spoke up against him. In response, Dr. Eggman used the Cacophonic Conch to inflict pain on the Deadly Six as punishment. When later meeting the Deadly Six in Desert Ruins, Dr. Eggman expressed his disappointment for their failures despite his effort to help them and blew into the Cacophonic Conch, inflicting the Deadly Six with pain again.

However, Sonic and Tails arrived on the scene, with Sonic suspecting the shell was trouble. Ignoring Tails' warnings, Sonic knocked the conch out of Dr. Eggman's hands and into the horizon, never to be seen again. This was a terrible mistake, however, as the Deadly Six rebelled and took control of several Badniks before assaulting everyone present.

After the Deadly Six were dealt with, Dr. Eggman vowed to find another Cacophonic Conch to bring the Deadly Six under his control again.

While planning to recruit the Deadly Six to help him control the Zombots, Dr. Starline used the Warp Topaz to retrieve a Cacophonous Conch.[2] Later, After inviting the Deadly Six onto the Faceship, Starline used the Cacophonous Conch in an attempt to command the Zeti. However, the effects quickly wore off as soon as Starline stopped blowing but he was not aware of this. Seeing a window of opportunity, Zazz headbutted Starline, leaving Zeena to take the conch and hand it to Zavok.[3] After the Faceship was destroyed by Rouge the Bat, the Cacophonous Conch was left lying on the ground among the rubble.[4]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Dr. Eggman used a Cacophonic Conch to enslave the Deadly Six. However, the conch was broken by Orbot while under Sigma's control. These events would later be erased from history by Xander Payne.

In the not-so distant future, Dr. Eggman would acquire another Cacophonic Conch which he would use to enslave the Deadly Six again.

Trivia[]

  • An unused event story card suggests that the Cacophonic Conch was planned to appear in Sonic Runners before the game got shut down.
  • The way Dr. Eggman utilizes the Cacophonic Conch to control the Deadly Six is based off of the horagai (法螺貝?), the traditional Japanese usage of conch shells as trumpets.
  • In the Japanese version of Sonic Lost World, the Cacophonic Conch is not given a specific name, and is instead simply referred to as a "conch shell" (法螺貝 Horagai?).
