Nep-Enut is an enemy in the Yoshi franchise. It first appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Nep-Enuts are blue counterparts of Gargantua Blarggs and also sport a pair of large, angry eyebrows. In their sprites in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Nep-Enuts have no visible tongue. In Yoshi's Woolly World, they are made out of a blue yarn outline, matching the game's aesthetic, and in Yoshi's Crafted World, Nep-Enuts are made out of bubbled slime.

Behavior[]

Nep-Enuts live in the water. A Nep-Enut starts off submerged into the water, with only its eyebrows being visible. When being approached by a Yoshi, the Nep-Enut rises out, and if the Yoshi jumps over the Nep-Enut, it starts to chase him. In Yoshi's Woolly World, Nep-Enuts spit Shy Guys at a Yoshi.

Nep-Enuts are first encountered in What's Gusty Taste Like? and lastly in Nep-Enut's Domain. A Yoshi can throw an egg at a Nep-Enut to make it retreat underwater temporarily. One particular Nep-Enut, named Submarine Nep-Enut in the Player's Guide, lives in a secret underground area of What's Gusty Taste Like?, where it is entirely underneath terrain and Semisolid Platforms. Because of this, the Nep-Enut cannot be touched while its body is not out of the water, but it behaves identically to other Nep-Enuts.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

Nep-Enuts behave the same as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but they now appear in only one level, Up the Creek. Nep-Enuts were also given a variant, Egg-enuts, which dangle a fake egg and flails if a Yoshi gets too close.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Nep-Enuts are the namesake enemies in the level, Rise of the Nasty Nep-Enuts, where three are encountered. A Nep-Enut now has to take three hits from an egg before temporarily retreating into the water.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]

Nep-Enuts are enemies encountered only in Frozen Solid and Chilled. Yoshi can temporarily stun a Nep-Enut by throwing three Yarn Balls at it or freeze it with the effects of an Ice watermelon. A Yoshi can climb on a Nep-Enut while it is frozen and pound a frozen Nep-Enut to defeat it.

Yoshi's Crafted World[]

Nep-Enuts appear only in the level Pirate Pier. They retain their behavior from the Yoshi's Island games, but in their retreat animation from being hit, a Nep-Enut spins below the water. They are among the enemies that cannot be defeated.

In the background of the Yoshi's Island course is a Nep-Enut reaching about the same size as the mountains in the background. It is designed after the Nep-Enuts' sprites in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Behind the scenes[]

Etymology[]

Nep-Enut's name is an anagram of "Neptune".
