Super Mario

Beep Blocks are a recurring object in the Super Mario series. They first appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Description[]

Beep Blocks are a type of block that alternate between solid blocks and intangible outlines of various colors to the beat of in-game music. Because of this, Blinking Blocks both function as platforms that can be stood on and an obstacle that puts Mario and other characters at the risk of falling into a pit.

Beep Blocks have gone under various names between their appearances, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 naming them Beat Blocks and Super Mario Maker 2 naming them Blinking Blocks. Beep Blocks most commonly appear in pairs of red and blue, but these colors have sometimes varied, as well as the timing of them appearing and disappearing, depending on the beat of the background music.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Beat Blocks exclusively appear in Beat Block Galaxy, as the main and titular feature. In this appearance, all Beat Blocks are cube-shaped, and alternate between yellow and green. Mario or Luigi must traverse this galaxy, which is made up almost entirely of Beat Blocks, with caution and good timing. When the effects of the Double Time Comet arrive, the Star mission Silver Stars in Double Time causes the Beat Blocks to alternate at four times their regular speed (despite the mission's name). The Beat Blocks freeze when the mission is completed. The Beat Blocks's theme is used for other galaxies, such as the Upside Dizzy Galaxy, the Flipsville Galaxy (within Flipsville's new underground digs area), and the Flash Black Galaxy (whose Romp Comet's theme is overridden by the Beat Block music).

Super Mario 3D Land[]

Beat Blocks appear in an assortment of shapes, and are now red, yellow and blue. In World 6-4 and Special 7-2, all three colors appear one after the over, then vanish in the same order, leaving periods where either all or none of the Beat Blocks appear solid. However, in Special 3-5, the blocks alternate between one color each time. Special 7-2's Beat Block theme also replaces the Cosmic Mario theme despite there being Cosmic Clones.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Beat Blocks are more closely based on their role from Super Mario Galaxy 2 over Super Mario 3D Land. They alternate between blue and peach-colored blocks. Their first appearance is in Beep Block Skyway, while their faster variant appears in Blast Block Skyway. Later levels also include Beat Blocks in double time. Interestingly, the double time Beat Blocks also appear in levels where the song has different BPM, but they still alternate in the beat of the original song's BPM.

When any of the playable characters take damage, the Beat Block theme pauses until time starts going again.

In Captain Toad Treasure Tracker[]

In this the level is called Beep Block Sky Plaza, where the player has to avoid fireballs thrown by the Fire Bros. Beep Blocks function similarly as in Super Mario 3D World, except the solid blocks that stay solid throughout the level have a different texture. Several of the Beep Blocks also include ladders that do not disappear so that Captain Toad can climb them, as he is incapable of jumping.

Trivia[]

  • In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the player's Wii Remote also beeps three times before the Beat Blocks alternate.
