Dino Piranha is a large Piranha Plant that resembles to that of a dinosaur and is a boss in Super Mario Galaxy. He makes his home in the Good Egg Galaxy and is much bigger than his Super Mario Galaxy 2 counterpart Peewee Piranha. The Dino Piranha serves as the first/penultimate boss of Good Egg Galaxy, is the first boss of the Terrace, which is the first area of the game and it is overall the first boss of the game that Mario encounters.

The Dino Piranha is inside an egg on his planet when Mario first encounters him. His egg is cracked when Mario crashes into him with the power of a Launch Star. The Dino Piranha then starts moving around from inside the egg, and when Mario attacks the tail, this will start the battle properly.

The Dino Piranha returns in the Melty Molten Galaxy looking for revenge as Fiery Dino Piranha.

Appearance[]

As his name applies, Dino Piranha is a cross between a Piranha Plant and a dinosaur. Dino Piranha's head looks like that of Petey Piranha, though his body is much different. The Dino Piranha's body beneath the Piranha Plant head is that of a dinosaur's, with a green hue and has light green lips. His tail has a brown orb at the end of it with a texture like a seed. When he first breaks out of the egg his head is purple, but when enraged he turns red with anger, and when he is defeated it turns blue. The egg itself is white with brown and green spots.

As Fiery Dino Piranha, the Dino Piranha has singed petals ringing his head, and his body has a red and black color scheme while his egg is black with red spots.

History[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Dino Piranha Hatches

The Dino Piranha emerges from his Egg.

The Dino Piranha is first seen in the Good Egg Galaxy during the mission Dino Piranha. The colossal plant-like dinosaur is seen inside his egg until Mario/Luigi arrives on the planet cracking the egg and awakening the Dino Piranha which proceeds to walk around, after doing a Star Spin on his exposed tail, the egg shatters revealing the Dino Piranha which chases Mario/Luigi around the planet, the plumbers can only beat the Dino Piranha by Star Spinning by the tail again, the Dino Piranha gets more aggressive and bloodthirsty with each hit (if the Dino Piranha gets a hit on Mario/Luigi he will knock the plumber high in the air and snicker at the damage dealt). After four hits, the Dino Piranha collapses releasing the first Power Star. When the Speedy Comet soars over the Good Egg Galaxy, the Dino Piranha returns initiating Mario/Luigi to do a rematch with the Dinosaur Veggie under timed conditions. Once done, the plumbers earn a second Power Star. A stronger relative (or form) of Dino Piranha engulfed in fire called Fiery Dino Piranha appears as a boss much later in the game in the Melty Molten Galaxy.

During the ending cutscene after the Lumas save the Universe from a massive Black Hole that spawns after Bowser meets his downfall, the Dino Piranha can be seen next two a fountain that some walking pumpkins and Mushroom Retainers circle around.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Dino Piranha Returns

Dino Piranha is back.

The Dino Piranha returns in Super Mario Galaxy 2 as one of the five returning bosses (alongside King Kaliente, Major Burrows, Bouldergeist, and Fiery Dino Piranha) appearing in the Boss Blitz Galaxy. He is the first of the five bosses to be fought in the Galaxy, Mario/Luigi immediately lands on his egg the moment they arrive on the Galaxy and once again cracking it (This cutscene replaces the standard "WELCOME TO THE GALAXY!" message that appears in most Galaxies.), they the proceed to Star Spin the tail end once again shattering the egg revealing the Dino Piranha. The Dino Piranha once again attacks by attempting to trample Mario/Luigi and gets more aggressive and bloodthirsty with each hit. After four hits, the Dino Piranha is down and releases the Launch Star leading to King Kaliente's planet, the Dino Piranha is fought again during the Speedy Comet's arrival on the Galaxy once again being the first boss fought. In addition to the returning Fiery Dino Piranha, Peewee Piranha another relative of Dino Piranha appears as the game's first boss being fought twice in the Sky Station Galaxy.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[]

Dino Piranha Fires

The Dino Piranha makes his strike.

In the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Dino Piranha appears as an opponent during the Dream Spacewalk event. He is located on the Geo Planet (where Mario and Peewee Piranha clashed) in the Sky Station Galaxy and is out to bring the Galaxy under his control with the Lumas watching in fear. The main objective of the team of four is to pass through the rings provided by the Lumas, then perform a Rolling Attack toward Dino Piranha to deal some damage to him. Once the player hits Dino Piranha several times, he will start to spit fireballs at the team, which must be countered with a Star Spin. The team must use these methods repeatedly to defeat him and save the Galaxy and Lumas from his wrath thus completing the event.

Battle[]

Dino Piranha Battle

Mario flees from the Dino Piranha.

The Dino Piranha starts out inside his egg shell; during this time, he only walks around. The battle starts as Mario smashes into the egg that the boss resides in at the start of his fight. The egg cracks a little and the boss's tail pops out. The bottom of the egg breaks open so the Dino Piranha can move about while his body is still in the egg. Mario must run to the exposed tail after he recovers from the fall and use his Star Spin on the coconut-like ball at the tail's end while the creature is somnambulating. This will cause the monster's tail to fly back and smash the rest of the egg open, causing him to hatch completely. The Dino Piranha is now fully revealed and enraged, starts running around the planet trying to attack Mario, initiating the second phase of his fight. The Dino Piranha chases after Mario when he's close but whenever Mario is far away, the Dino Piranha aimlessly roams around the planet. Being the first boss, the Dino Piranha is an extremely easy boss, Mario must use his Star Spin technique on the boss's tail in order to damage him. The Dino Piranha mainly attacks by running around and attempt to deal contact damage on Mario/Luigi; be careful though, as Dino Piranha gets damages, it becomes faster, after smacking his tail into his head two more times, Dino Piranha turns a sickly color and explodes, releasing a Power Star.

If Mario/Luigi is injured during the fight, Star Spin at the Item Crystals containing Coins to restore any lost health, additionally, shooting a Star Bit at one of the plants on the ground can also reveal a Coin to collect for health.

Music[]

The Dino Piranha, despite his lack of difficulty during his first fight, uses a panicked-sounding song in C# Minor. After the second hit, a slightly faster variation with a shorter intro plays in D Minor. This song is reused for his second fight and when the Tarantox is fought.
