Super Mario

Spiky Piranha Plants (also called Spiked Piranha Plants or Spiny Piranha Plants) are a rare sub-species of Piranha Plant found in Super Mario Galaxy 2, they appear to be related to both Prickly Piranha Plants and Super Piranha Plants. They have a green thorny stem that supports their red thorn-covered black head. When they see Mario they will slam their head to the ground trying to hurt Mario similar to a Prickly Piranha Plant however, Spiky Piranha Plants are far more dangerous as due to the red thorns, Mario cannot stomp on its head. Mario must use the means of various projectiles to bring down a Spiky Piranha Plant.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Spiky Piranha Plant Attacks

The Spiky Piranha Plant gets ready to attack!

Spiky Piranha Plants are first seen in Super Mario Galaxy 2. In this game, they are incredibly rare enemies as only one appears in the entire game. It is encountered in the Sky Station Galaxy and is seen guarding the Key which opens the barrier where the Power Star is being kept. When Mario/Luigi approaches the Spiky Piranha Plant, it attacks by slamming down at the plumbers similar to the Prickly Piranha Plant however unlike the Prickly Piranha Plant, the Spiky Piranha Plant is adorned in red spikes making it hazardous to jump on, plus it is immune to Star Spins making it immune to virtually all of the plumbers' primary attacks. To beat a Spiky Piranha Plant, the plumbers will need to whack a nearby Stretch Plant into it as it attacks.

In Super Smash Bros Ultimate[]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Piranha Plant becomes a small Spiky Piranha Plant for its side smash attack. In Palutena's Temple, Spiky Piranha Plants (just called Spiny Piranhas) are mentioned briefly by Viridi during Palutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant.

Trivia[]

  • While Spiky Piranha Plants are immune to most attacks, they can still be stunned by the Co-Star Luma which can make targeting it easier.
  • Spiky Piranha Plants slightly resemble the Inky Piranha Plants and Fire Piranha Plants from Super Mario 3D Land.
  • Hacking the game shows that Spiky Piranha Plants can also be beaten with Shells.[1] This remains unused in the base game as Shells are never seen in Galaxies with Spiky Piranha Plants.
