Lily Pads are an object which first appear in Super Mario Sunshine and return in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario Sunshine[]

Lily Pads appear in the lake areas of Bianco Hills, but one is most notably featured in the Lily Pad Ride, in which Mario has to use a Lily Pad to travel across Poisoned Water and collect eight red coins for a Shine Sprite. Similarly to a mudboat, Mario can steer a Lily Pad by spraying water from FLUDD into the water, pushing him and the Lily Pad in the opposite direction. The Poisoned Water in Bianco Hills's The Secret of the Dirty Lake episode as well as the Lily Pad Ride causes the Lily Pad to slowly wither away as Mario stands on it, putting him at risk of falling into the Poisoned Water.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Lily Pads appear in Starshine Beach Galaxy. Given the presence of Piantas, it can be inferred that their appearance here draws reference to Super Mario Sunshine. Lily Pads were made safer to utilize, as ridges were added along their edge, protecting Mario from walking off by mistake. Due to the absence of FLUDD, Mario can instead control a Lily Pad by standing at the edge of the direction he wishes to move it.
