Super Mario
Not to be confused with Cosmic Clone or Shadow Mario.
"Let's Go!"
—Cosmic Mario

Cosmic Mario is a minor antagonist from the first Super Mario Galaxy. He appears as a boss in Galaxies that have been infected by a Cosmic Comet. As Super Mario Galaxy 2 lacks Cosmic Comets, replacing them with Clone Comets, Cosmic Mario doesn't appear in that game.

Cosmic Mario appears as a Star Bit-filled version of Mario (or Luigi) in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D Land. His voice is unusually high-pitched and squeaky. His primary role in the game is similar to Koopa the Quick in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, and Il Piantissimo from Super Mario Sunshine, in which the player races him to get an award; in this case, a Power Star/Flag Pole. Holding Z when in the ready position causes Mario or Luigi to get a boost. The races are slightly more difficult against Cosmic Luigi.

Cosmic Mario resembles Shadow Mario's appearance and Cosmic Clones. It was given to him to add a space effect to the character.

Cosmic Mario/Luigi is only in a galaxy if there is a Cosmic Comet orbiting the galaxy. Cosmic Comets appear in the following galaxies:

  • Honeyhive Galaxy: Honeyhive Cosmic Mario Race: Mario and Cosmic Mario race from the starting area, through the archway, and through the honey hall that is visited in the first mission.
  • Freezeflame Galaxy: Frosty Cosmic Mario Race: Mario and Cosmic Mario race in the ice and lava platforms area. The lava platforms have frozen to make the race easier.
  • Gold Leaf Galaxy: Cosmic Mario Forest Race: Mario and Cosmic Mario race from the starting area to the rafters of the main planet, taking a route akin to the mission When It Rains, It Pours.
  • Sea Slide Galaxy: Underwater Cosmic Mario Race: Mario and Cosmic Mario race from the starting area, past the Faster Than A Speeding Penguin zone, to the lighthouse. Strangely, Cosmic Mario exits the water, and because of that, he could slow down.

Trivia[]

  • Cosmic Mario shares his voice with the Cosmic Clones in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  • Cosmic Mario/Luigi's theme, whenever Mario or Luigi is racing him, is a sped up, high-pitched and distorted version of the original Super Mario Bros. theme with a bassline of a sped-up and distorted version of the Underground Theme.
  • The Gold Leaf Galaxy is the only Galaxy whose Cosmic Comet mission has Cosmic Mario's name at the start of the name. The rest have his name in the middle.
  • Cosmic Mario is one of the few bosses that can cause instant death. He can do this by grabbing the Power Star before Mario himself can.
  • Cosmic Mario is the only boss that does not have a defeat animation. Like the Spooky Speedster, however, he does have a victory pose, where he poses tauntingly on the Power Star while Mario watches the scene.
  • Cosmic Mario was originally going to be fought in the Space Junk Galaxy, but that fight was scrapped and replaced with a Speedy Comet in the final game due to the Pull Star paths.
