“I am Mauvier. The pleasure is all mine. Lady Veyle has told us much about you.”
—Mauvier

Mauvier is a character from Fire Emblem Engage. He is a member of the Four Hounds, an organization that plans to revive the Fell Dragon.

Profile[]

Mauvier was born to a wealthy family in Firene. When his father died due to an illness, his mother moved them to Elusia and became a follower of the Fell Dragon, as she felt the Divine Dragon ignored her prayers. Though never a truly devout believer, Mauvier would eventually become one of the Four Hounds, and Veyle's devoted knight.

Mauvier was the first person that Veyle met when she awoke from her long slumber. He dutifully accepted when she asked him to be her knight.

After learning how Veyle was being manipulated by Sombron and Zephia, Mauvier joins with Alear to save her at Lythos Castle. When Marni learns the truth as well she attempts to aid them, but is killed by Zephia after she attempts to break Veyle's control helmet. Both Zephia and Griss mock her death, enraging Mauvier to the point that he defects from the Four Hounds to avenge Marni's death and save Veyle.

Upon his defection, Mauvier joins Alear's forces for the remainder of the game. With Zephia and Griss' deaths, he is left as the sole surviving member of the Four Hounds.

Fell Xenologue[]

Unlike the other members of the Four Hounds, in the Fell Xenologue Elyos, Mauvier's counterpart bears the same name, visage, and personality as his main story version.

After the death of his world's Veyle, Fell Mauvier defected from Sombron's army and founded the Four Winds to protect Nel and Nil, letting Zelestia take the role of leader. Nel sent Mauvier to Solm to track the movements of Fell Timerra and her army. When Solm declared war against Elusia, Mauvier was forced to follow them to the battlefield where he would rendezvous with his allies alongside the recently summoned Alear from another world. After defeating Fell Ivy and Timerra before they were killed by Nel, Mauvier and the other members of the Four Winds followed her.

Nil informs the group that Alear abruptly left the force to complete their mission to save Elyos and he leads them to an abandoned temple where he had tracked them to. Inside, Nil reveals that the temple is infested with Corrupted and he then traps them inside. Mauvier and the Four Winds give Nel an opportunity to escape while they hold off the Corrupted. Fearing the possibility of the Corrupted being released after seeing the sheer number of them, the Four Winds decide to collapse the temple and sacrifice themselves. Each of them destroy one of the supporting pillars of the temple. As the temple begins to fall, Mauvier goes to each of them and utilizes a Warp staff to send his allies to safety. The temple finally collapses, burying the Corrupted and killing Mauvier in the process.

The other members of the Four Winds mourned his death but resolved to continue on in his sake, eventually rejoining Alear and Nel's forces on the Fallen Somniel to stop Nil's plans to become Sombron's heir. After a fierce battle, Nil falls and the Four Winds are left to contemplate their next course of action. As the last remaining living individuals and the world already in ruins, Alear extends an offer to them to come to their version of Elyos. Knowing that Mauvier would encourage them to move on, they accept their offer and decide to fight on in his honor in the other Elyos.

The Four Winds can interact with the main timeline Mauvier, coming to terms with his passing while also getting to know the current Mauvier who they find nearly the same as their former friend and learning about their counterparts.

Personality[]

Mauvier is a honest and chivalrous, has a kindly nature, and defends the weak. He rarely speaks, and is so serious that he doesn't know how to rest. Whereas his fellow Hounds Griss and Marni crave punishment and praise respectively, Mauvier holds no wish for a reward, his only desire being to serve Veyle as her knight.

Of the Four Hounds, Mauvier is for the majority of the game the only one to show respect and care for Veyle's true self. He worries for her and disagrees with Zephia's methods of using magic to force an alternate, more vicious personality out of her.

Despite their differences, Mauvier considers Marni a friend and comrade. When Marni secretly takes two Emblem Rings in a bid to confront Alear's forces, and after they end up losing them in the failed encounter, Mauvier attempts to sway Zephia to punish him instead for failing to stop her, though he is unsuccessful. It is Marni's death at the hands of Zephia that serves as the tipping point for his leaving the Four Hounds. He joins forces with Alear in order to avenge her as well as to free Veyle from Sombron's control.

The Mauvier of the parallel Elyos that Nel and Nil come from is much like his counterpart, albeit being on better terms with his fellow members of the Four Winds. He failed to protect Veyle, and her subsequent death in a pointless battle continues to weigh on his conscience. While as founder of the Four Winds he could have acted as its leader, he chose to let Zelestia take that position in his place. He ultimately sacrifices his life to ensure that his fellow Winds can escape a collapsing temple, wishing that they can find happiness even in his absence.

He is the least affected by hypnosis out of the entire army.

Overall[]

Secret Book (Artwork)
Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Mauvier is a late-game recruit with strong base stats in every area except mediocre Luck. His growths are similarly strong, with all of them being above average or good with the exception of middling Strength and Speed growths. However, due to his late join time, his growths are not as important as he is unlikely to get a significant amount of levels quickly without grinding. Both his offensive and defensive capabilities are above average in regards to physical and magical, however he does not excel in either area in the way dedicated physical and magical units do.

His starting class, Royal Knight, provides him a balance between both physical and magic damage/durability. It also provides him with staff utility, allowing him to function as a healer/support unit should the situation call for it. His good Strength and Magic allows him to go into practically any class and use practically any weapon effectively, especially magic weapons such as the Flame Lance or Levin Sword. If one wishes to take advantage of his magic, making him a Sage, Mage Knight, or other magical class is worthwhile to up his potential damage. Focusing on his physical aspect by making him a Halberdier, Paladin, or other physical-focused class is worthwhile as well. As for his Personal and class skill, Contemplative complements his bulk by granting him a defense boost if he waits without performing any actions, and Reforge has somewhat situational use as a safety net to prevent breaks on another unit trying to tank a hit.

Mauvier's balanced stat spread means that he can utilize almost any Emblem Ring he desires. If one wishes to emphasize his physical capabilities, Emblems such as the Bracelet of the Brash General or the Ring of the Radiant Hero can take advantage of his strong bulk to make him even more strong and durable. The Ring of the Holy Knight also synergizes with his status as a cavalier to grant him incredible movement capabilities. Magical emblems also work well on Mauvier, such as the Ring of the Dawn Maiden or the Bracelet of the Strategist.

Overall, Mauvier is a reliable unit that fulfills his purpose as a late-game recruit. While he is unlikely to excel in any one area, he is very well-balanced across the board and can easily take a spot in any team should they find themselves wanting for an additional unit.

Trivia[]

  • Mauvier is Engage's only playable character who starts out in the Lance Fighter promotion-tree. For comparison, the Axe Fighter tree has four characters (Boucheron, Panette, Saphir, and Anna), and the Sword Fighter tree has three (Lapis, Kagetsu, and Goldmary).
  • Due to his weapon proficiencies, Mauvier may reclass into a Griffin Knight at the start of The Fell & the Divine, without any prior work with Emblem Rings. The class has the same capabilities as his starting class, with lower stat caps (aside from Speed, Dexterity, Luck, and Build) but the ability to fly.
  • As a playable character, Mauvier is the only member of the Four Hounds to have a personal skill.
  • Mauvier shares some similarities with Petrine from Path of Radiance:
    • Both are members of an elite foursome at the top of the antagonistic enemy force of their respective games, with Mauvier a member of the Four Hounds and Petrine a member of Daein's Four Riders.
    • Both are cavalry-type units that wield flaming lances, with Mauvier being a Royal Knight and Petrine being a Paladin.
  • Mauvier is the tallest character in Engage.
  • According to the ally notebook, his ring size is 11.5 | W 3/4.
    • He is tied with Diamant for the largest ring size in the game.
  • Mauvier is one of two characters to not change personality in the alternate world in the Fell Xenologue, the other being Sombron.
