—Freyja, Book IV, Chapter 4
Freyja is the main antagonist of Book IV from Fire Emblem Heroes. She is a Vanir, and the queen of Dökkálfheimr, the realm of nightmares.
Profile[]
According to Freyr, Freyja was ridiculed for having a mark on the underside of her nose as a child. As a result, despite her beauty having blossomed and several sought to court her, Freyja rejected all others and focused her affections solely on her brother, as he was the only one kind to her.
At the end of Chapter 4, Freyja, with the help of Plumeria and Triandra, take advantage of Freyr giving away Gullinkambi, his only defense against her and the Dökkálfr, to the Order of Heroes, and kidnap him.
In Chapter 9, Freyja forces Brísingamen onto Freyr, allowing her to have access to both the power of Dreams and Nightmare, and as a result become omnipotent. When she relinquishes her brother's power of dreams, she created copies of herself to attack and harass the Order of Heroes, forcing them to retreat, but chooses not to kill them right away because she'd rather torture them to convince them she's omnipotent.
In Chapter 10, she encounters the Order of Heroes again and is about to kill them. However, Freyr tells the Order to kill him so they can weaken Freyja, which they reluctantly do. Freyr's death causes Freyja to lose the power over dreams, causing her to scream in rage and grief over her brother's death.
In Chapter 11, she relentlessly pursues the Order of Heroes, determined to make them suffer and know the pain she felt upon losing Freyr. Along the way, she tells them the story of how ordinary human children were turned into álfr to save the dream world, and then taunts Mirabilis and Sharena about their lost memories. Eventually, she sets Plumeria loose on the Order, and isn't too surprised at her defeat and subsequent death.
In Chapter 13 after Alfonse is revealed to be Kiran, Freyja tempts Kiran to stay dreaming telling the summoner that if they wake up, the real Alfonse will cease to exist. Regardless, Kiran decides that they have to wake up in spite of Freyja's words in order to end the nightmare. After Kiran and the Order of Heroes defeat Freyja one last time, the group manages to wake up fully and return to the real world. Impressed with Kiran's bravery, Freyja manages to resurrect Triandra and Plumeria at the cost of her life. Before passing, she urges her álfr to find true happiness and finally understands why Freyr cared for the humans so much.
Nihility and Dream[]
Despite Freyja's sacrifice for her álfar, Triandra and Plumeria are granted a way to resurrect her. As a result of the potential chaos her revival would bring, the Ruler of Nihility, Ginnungagap brings the dream realms to the brink of ruin by utilizing the queens nightmares. This causes Peony and Mirabilis to journey with Plumeria and Triandra respectively.
Peony and Plumeria meet a young girl named Eitr, who serves Ginnungagap. She attacks them under Ginnungagap's orders, but is thwarted. Eitr informs them that Ginnungagap plans on ensuring that Freyja never resurrects.
"Just a minute! The following section contains spoilers. Viewing it will cost a lot. Are you prepared to pay for it?"
|
It is revealed that Eitr is merely the personification of Freyja's younger self and due to this realization, Eitr transforms into Freyja.
Freyja defies Ginnungagap's orders and attacks her, repelling her due to having control of the Nightmare realm. In the aftermath of the battle, Freyja thanks the álfar for helping her fend off Ginnungagap and restoring her. Per Peony's request, Eitr is granted a separate form within the Nightmare realm as she has become an important person to the four during their travels. She expresses her gratitude to Plumeria and Triandra, knowing that the two had to cut a deal with higher powers to ensure her revival. When they tell her that they are willing to fulfill the end of their bargain, Freyja bluntly tells them that she will defy whatever power may come to collect on their bargain.
Personality[]
Freyja is a cold woman who rules over the realm of nightmares. Contrary to her brother who loves humanity and is saddened that the two turned some humans into álfar, Freyja is indifferent to the matter as it saved their world and they are nothing more than tools for their own uses.
Despite their difference in opinion, Freyja loves her brother and desires to be with him. In her youth, she was more compassionate but also very meek and timid. She was often ridiculed for her appearance, only finding solace in Freyr, the only person to give her true compassion and love. This turned into both a deep sense of admiration for her brother. Even though the two had a falling out of opinions when they grew up, Freyja never stopped loving Freyr. When he defied her and asked the Order of Heroes to kill him to stop Freyja, she showed nothing less than righteous fury towards his killers as she openly grieved his death.
Despite her cold demeanor to her allies, Freyja truly cares for her álfr, as she used her life force to resurrect them and urges them to live happy lives. In turn, she is touched by their desire to revive her despite her dying wish and is grateful that they resurrected her. As a result, she is highly possessive of her beloved dökkálfr as she states that she would not allow them to obey the commands of anyone else and would defy any entity who tries to take them away from her.

Base Set[]
After the conclusion of Book IV, Freyja became a playable Light Mythic Hero. Her Green Beast Cavalry combo makes her unique among the Mythic Heroes, especially given her strong base kit. Her offensive stats are fantastic at 38 Atk and 44 Spd. Her defenses are not particularly weak and can take a hit or two, but she is not bulky enough to take constant punishment with her 64 physical and 62 magical scores. However, this is a bit deceptive thanks in part to her skills in her kit. Overall, Freyja is a complete package who will serve as a strong unit for the player's roster, especially when used offensively.
Nightmare Horn is her unique weapon that contains the standard beast transformation conditions and innately increases her Spd by 3. Regardless if she is transformed or not, Freyja can counterattack at any distance. Additionally, if her Spd is greater than her foe's, she reduces incoming damage from attacks during combat and from area of effect specials, giving her strong damage mitigation and makes her deceptively bulky as a result. If she transforms, she gains +3 Atk and also gains new skills during combat. If she initiates, she inflicts -4 Atk/Def on her foe and also negates their ability to perform a follow-up. As with most Beasts, Freyja is at her strongest when she is transformed and can be built flexibly to focus on her player turn skills, take full advantage of her defensive Distant Counter effect, or be an flexible dual phase unit.
Her unique skill is Binding Necklace, which activates when she is not adjacent to any ally. She gains +2 Atk/Spd/Def/Res during combat while her foe suffers -2 Atk/Spd/Def/Res. In addition, if her foe has any visible buffs, Freyja steals those bonuses and inflicts the foe with the same total in penalties for each stat independently. Essentially, she gains even more stats and become eve more deceptively stronger for foes who carelessly shoves bonuses on their units who enter combat with her.
Luna allows Freyja to ignore 50% of her foe's Def, allowing her to pierce through high bulk enemies. She has Atk/Spd Solo 4, granting her -7 Atk/Spd during combat if she is not adjacent to an ally and stacks with any bonuses she gains from Binding Necklace. Pulse Smoke slows the special cooldown of her foe and any foe within two spaces of her foe when she initiates combat.
Counters[]
Freyja's main goal is to stay solo, thus she can be a victim to bad AI who keep her close to her allies. This is especially hurtful to her if she is not in her beast form as she loses two very powerful effects. With her Cavalry status, this also means that she is weak to units who deal effective damage to those type of units, namely Gray and Festival Micaiah.
Skill Inheritance[]
Freyja's starting kit is perfectly tailored to succeed immediately. With no Support skill, Reposition is a universally useful skill for her to inherit for its general solid application for most teams. Noontime can replace Luna to give her self sustain since her damage is already incredibly high. Galeforce can also be considered to make her extremely aggressive for quickly completing maps.

Etymology[]
In Norse Mythology, Freyja is the Norse goddess of love, fertility, beauty, war, death and sorcery. She's also the ruler of Fólkvangr and the younger twin sister of Freyr. She additionally is destined to survive Ragnarok.
Trivia[]
- Freyja is the first Heroes original character to be a Beast unit.
- Its possible Freyja's unit type as well as her status as a Beast unit references Heiðrún, a mythical goat in Nordic mythology. In one of the poems contained within the Prose Edda, the giantess Hyndla insults Freyja by referring to her as a "She-goat" and equating her to Heiðrún.
- Freyja's beast form closely resembles an Alpine Ibex, a type of mountain goat found in the European Alps. Curiously, Markhor goats (the caprine from which Freyr's beast form seems to take after the most) are said to be closely related to Ibexes.
- Freyja is the only character introduced in Book IV to not be featured in a Cipher card.
- Freyja is the first main antagonist from a book who's original form is obtainable in a playable format to be given a special variation, the second being Surtr.
- According to the Fire Emblem Heroes Character Illustrations Vol. 2 book, Freyja stands at 186cm (or about 6'1).
- Story-wise, Freyja is the first and currently the only main antagonist of a Book that has been resurrected following the Book's ending. While Gullveig has been resurrected at the end of Book VII, only her soul has been resurrected within Seiðr.
