Goop, also named gunk,[1] is a thick, slimy, paint-like residue in the Mario franchise. It first appears in Super Mario Sunshine.
Description[]
Throughout its appearances, Goop typically has adverse effects, such as being able to sink characters, trees, or structures through the ground.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Sunshine[]
During the game's events, Mario is forced to clean up goop all over Isle Delfino with the help of FLUDD. Most of the goop is created by Shadow Mario using his Magic Paintbrush, which he also uses to create Graffiti and Rainbow Ms. Gelato Beach and Corona Mountain are the only two main courses to not feature goop or any other pollution.
A few different types of enemies can be encountered from goop, including Polluted Piranha Plants, which appear from mounds of goop named Generators, and Swoopin' Stus, which emerge from goop-covered areas. The most common type of goop is a tar-like substance that slickens the ground. If Mario walks on it, he loses traction. The goop also dirties and sticks to his clothes, which Mario can clean off by either spin-jumping or swimming in clean water. This variety is found in almost every area. Some enemies release it, while others are infused with it. Generators are sometimes paired with common goop.
There are five different types of goop:
- Goop that is pink, yellow, orange, and white, which appears in the Delfino Airstrip and Noki Bay
- Brown-and-white goop, which appears in Delfino Plaza and Bianco Hills. Petey Piranha launches this type of goop from his mouth. While flying around, Coo Coos drop splats of brown goop in a similar fashion to bird poop. A certain Pianta in Delfino Plaza describes the goop as tasting "sweet," and he likens it to candy.
- Black goop, which appears in Delfino Plaza, Ricco Harbor, and Noki Bay when released by Bloopers and Gooper Blooper.
- Electric goop, which electrocutes Mario upon contact. It only appears in Sirena Beach.
- Burning goop, which burns Mario upon contact. It only appears in Pianta Village.
Locations[]
In Delfino Plaza, the goop is mainly black in color. Goop also blocks the way to Bianco Hills, Gelato Beach, and Ricco Harbor. Mario must defeat the Polluted Piranha Plants in order to clean up the goop. Goop can also be found on the Shine Gate and the two bells, which Mario can only access via the Rocket Nozzle. Mario receives a Shine Sprite for each one that he has cleaned.
In Bianco Hills, the goop is mainly caused by more Polluted Piranha Plants and Petey Piranha. The goop here is mainly brown in color.
In Ricco Harbor, goop is mainly caused by Bloopers and Gooper Blooper. There is also polluted lakes in two missions that act the same as the one from Bianco Hills. Ricco Harbor is known for being one of the most polluted areas in Isle Delfino, and the goop there is usually black in color.
In Pinna Park, goop can be found only on the beach. It is caused by enemies that try to drop on Mario and harm him.
In Sirena Beach, electric goop is mostly found in the first mission which was caused by the manta. It only appears as the dangerous blue/yellow electric goop. It also appears in the sixth mission where Mario must clean up the electric goop on the beach under the given time limit.
In Noki Bay, goop is found both on land and in the water of this level. It is caused by the cannon mole, Gooper Blooper, and Eely Mouth. It is necessary to note that Mario must stay out of the water until he has defeated Eely Mouth; otherwise, he will rapidly take damage the longer he is in the water.
In Pianta Village, only burning goop makes an appearance. It is mainly caused by fire Chain Chomps and Shadow Mario. Mario should be careful as Shadow Mario in this level leaves behind a fire trail every time.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]
The black goop is extensively featured throughout the Bowser's Fury campaign, along with graffiti. An electric goop-like texture is used whenever Bowser Jr. uses his Magic Paintbrush to paint graffiti.
Black splotchy goop can be found polluting the waters of Lake Lapcat, and it is present due to Fury Bowser, whom Bowser Jr. covered with the same goop. The black goop in Fury Bowser's surroundings resemble ferrofluid, a typically dark fluid that can form spikes when influenced by a magnetic field. Sometimes, when Mario finds Cat Shines, some goop in areas near the site of the Cat Shine disappears, usually revealing a new Cat Shine. However, Lake Lapcat cannot be completely cleansed of goop.
Attempting to swim in this goop causes Mario to take damage; this is unavoidable, as it negates the effects of all power-ups, including the Super Star and Invincibility Bell. If Plessie swims into the goop, it dives below the water and resurfaces somewhere without goop, leaving Mario to take damage. Small areas of goop can be traversed by utilizing the short invincibility granted after taking damage. If Mario attempts to leave the borders of the in-game map, an invisible border will prevent him from progressing. This border is also present around Fur Step Island before Giant Bowser is defeated at least once to prevent Mario from re-accessing the area.
In Mario Golf: Advance Tour[]
Goop appears on the Mushroom Course along with many Polluted Piranha Plants. Landing the ball in goop counts as out of bounds.
In Mario Power Tennis[]
Goop appears as an obstacle on the Delfino Plaza Court. It can cause players to slip and slide around. The player must also clear away goop in a tic-tac-toe-like minigame called Tic-Tac-Glow.
In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]
During the Airplane Guard sequence of the battle with Petey Piranha, he attacks Mario and Luigi by spitting balls of goop like in Super Mario Sunshine.
In Dr. Mario World[]
Dr. Petey Piranha uses goop to destroy viruses during his special skill animation.
