P4-AllOutAttack

An example of triggering an All-Out Attack in Persona 4

"When enemies are thrown off balance, they become vulnerable. An All-Out Attack will allow your entire team to attack simultaneously. Your enemies will be unable to defend against it; it's a very reliable method of attack. Whether or not you want to perform an All-Out Attack is up to you. But remember, you cannot perform it when you're alone. So if you want to have it in your arsenal, make sure your team is comprised of at least two members. That's all you need to know about All-Out Attacks."
Mitsuru Kirijo, Persona 3

All-Out Attack (総攻撃, Soukougeki)? is a battle tactic featured primarily in the Persona series.

Appearances[]

Role[]

Triggering the command allows all characters to strike all enemies together at the same time. When executed, a cut-in session briefly showcases the face or bust images of all participants, then all participants will rush into the enemies in a burst of comical dust and attack effects. In Persona 3 and Persona 4, if the attack does not finish off the enemies, then the characters will also be seen being knocked out before running back in the dust.

In addition, in Persona 4 and Persona 3 Portable, if the attack is the finishing blow to the remaining enemies, the clouds will form a comical skull as a finishing touch. In Persona 5, instead of the smoke of skull, the last party member who contributes to the chance of that All-Out Attack will receive a "finishing touch" close-up, replacing the generic victory cutscene.

Persona 2[]

The comical graphic style can date back to Persona 2, which has a Fusion Spell called "Triple Charge" and requires 3 Personas to perform the Havoc skill "Bash" together. This technique deals large Havoc-type damage to one foe.

In the PSP remakes of the duology, the All-Out Attack cut-in effect similar to the style of Persona 4 Golden is retroactively added before the initiation of any Fusion Spell. This extra animation can be turned off in the option menu.

Persona 3 / Persona 4[]

"There is a better way to defeat all of your enemies in battle than to attack them individually... You can perform an "All-Out Attack.""
—Mitsuru Kirijo, Persona 3

All-Out Attack in Persona 3 Portable with the female protagonist

Like Fusion Raids or Fusion Spells, the prerequisite to trigger an All-Out Attack requires more than one character on the battlefield, and the protagonist cannot initiate All-Out Attacks alone. Furthermore, all enemies on the battlefield must be knocked down in order to trigger the All-Out Attack command. Also, any members with any status effect that makes them uncontrollable manually (via the "command" option in tactics) will make them unable to join in; if the protagonist suffers from this, then it cannot be initiated at all. "Knocked Down," or simply "Down," is a status that can be inflicted in multiple ways, such as exploiting an enemy's weakness, unleashing a Critical hit on them or from simply missing a physical attack, which can sometimes cause them to "stumble." The Fusion Spell "Jack Brothers," usable with Jack Frost and Pyro Jack, and Kanji's "The Man's Way" special skill can also be used to achieve this effect as well.

AllOutAttack P3RE

All-Out Attacks in Persona 3 Reload.

However, there are some instances in which even though all enemies are knocked down, the All-Out Attack command will not initiate; an All-Out Attack can only be initiated if the party has accessed One More, which innately requires that the combatant Downs an enemy one way or another, and only succeeding in doing so will prompt the system to check if all enemies are Downed and allow the option to initiate an All-Out Attack. One such case where the rule applies is if multiple enemies are faced, and all but one is knocked down; if the not-downed enemy is killed without unleashing a Critical or a weakness-exploiting attack on it, thus leaving the enemy party entirely knocked down, the party will not get an opportunity to unleash an All-Out Attack (unless the attack was a Follow Up attack that either did not count, or was a Critical or weakness-exploit, such as when finishing the last enemy that has not been downed with Chie's Galactic Punt). While late game boss enemies mostly lack weaknesses, the All-Out Attack can still be triggered should the boss be hit with a Critical Physical attack or miss with its own Physical attack and slip.

The damage of an All-Out Attack is based on the normal weapon attack damage of each character and the total present characters in the battlefield. Thus, theoretically, the more powerful the characters' equipped weapons are, the more damage the All-Out Attack inflicts. All-Out Attacks also deal more damage should there be only one targeted foe, rather than a group. An All-Out Attack is Physical Almighty based, meaning it cannot be nullified, repelled or drained. However, the damage of an All-Out Attack can still be severely weakened should the targeted enemies resist Physical and/or Almighty-based attacks.

In Persona 3 Portable, finishing a battle with an All-Out Attack guarantees activation of Shuffle Time, as the "final blow" is still credited to the protagonist, therefore making its use pivotal in grinding.

RiseAllOut

Rise joining an All-Out Attack.

In Persona 4 Golden, Rise Kujikawa can randomly join the team during an All-Out Attack. If she joins, a special animation will play. She will add damage to the attack and cause the cloud of smoke to be colored purple. The amount of damage added will increase every time the protagonist spends time with her on a scooter trip and has her think of her future.

Also exclusive to Persona 4 Golden, if an All-Out Attack does not defeat all the enemies, an additional follow up Co-op attack will sometimes trigger. These attacks require two specific teammates, with both of them participating in the All-Out Attack (not Downed, Dizzy, etc). They have special animations and deal Physical damage. No team configuration exists that can hold more than one pair of characters are capable of this.

Twin Dragons

The character pairs that can perform these attacks (and their names) are:

Unlike in the Persona 5 series of games prior, in Persona 3 Reload, if there are any untargetable enemies on-screen, an all-out attack can be initiated against the enemies that can be targeted. This occurs during the Arcana Strength and Arcana Hanged Man battles, both of them which have enemies that can be downed and untargetable enemy objects.

Also in Persona 3 Reload, inspired by the aesthetics of Persona 5, each character has a finishing touch that can be activated if they have directly opened the choice for an All-Out Attack, which follows after Shuffle Time. Besides the flavor text "MASS DESTRUCTION" that is shared by all party members in the background, each character has a unique tagline:

Party Member Color Palette Tagline
BG Text
Protagonist "DONE AND DUSTED."
Yukari Takeba "THERE YOU HAVE IT."
Junpei Iori "THAT'S THE GAME!"
Akihiko Sanada "ON TO THE NEXT BOUT."
Mitsuru Kirijo "KNEEL BEFORE ME."
Aigis "TARGET NEUTRALIZED."
Ken Amada "DON'T LOOK DOWN ON ME."
Koromaru "WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!"
Shinjiro Aragaki "DON'T WASTE YOUR BREATH."
Metis "ANYTHING FOR HER."

Persona 4 Arena[]

All-Out Attacks are a special, universal offensive option in the Persona 4 Arena duology. Any character can perform an All-Out Attack at any time by pressing the A+B buttons while standing. This causes the player character to rush toward the enemy with an overhead strike while guarding against most enemy attacks. If the attack connects, the player can execute an All-Out Rush by mashing the A+B buttons during an All-Out Attack, increasing the number of hits and damage dealt by up to an additional 17 hits. At the end of an All-Out Attack, the attacking player can press the C or D buttons to launch the enemy, with varying results depending on which finisher was executed and the number of hits added during the All-Out Rush.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth[]

All-Out Attacks are initiated at the end of a turn, with the chance of one occurring depending on how many characters are Boosted; the more characters in the Boosted state, the greater the chance of an All-Out Attack occurring. Ending a battle with an All-Out Attack grants an Experience Bonus, increasing the received Experience Points to 150%.

Margaret, Elizabeth and Theodore use an All-Out Attack during the ultimate boss fight.

Persona 5 / Royal[]

"I told you, it's called an All-out Attack. If you manage to knock all the enemies down, you might be able to use it to beat them all at once. It's a concentrated attack on defenseless enemies, after all."
Morgana, Persona 5
P5 All Out Attack

An example of an All-Out Attack in Persona 5 with a Finishing Touch

An All-Out Attack (temporarily stylized with a lower-case "o" in the original Persona 5, but reverted in Royal) is initiated by the same means as in Persona 3 and Persona 4. When all enemies are knocked down, a "Hold Up" session is triggered, accessing the choice between three options: "All-Out Attack," "Negotiation" and an option to disarm Hold Up. During negotiation, the option for All-Out Attack is still executable as long as it is the protagonist's turn to choose the next dialogue.

In order to trigger an All-Out Attack, there must be at least one other party member present alongside the protagonist. Additionally, allies that have been Downed or inflicted with a status ailment cannot participate. If the protagonist is not eligible to participate, or if he is the only one able to participate, the All-Out Attack cannot be triggered.

A different "finishing touch" close-up of that character will be displayed to replace the in-battle victory cutscene. The character selected is dependent on which ally inflicted the final Down that initiated the Hold Up: this is strictly only if they have a reserve One More, and in irregular cases where no One More has been rewarded, the focus of the finishing touch will default to the protagonist. For more information on criteria surrounding irregular Hold Ups, see Hold Up.

Even Caroline and Justine, in their boss fight, have their own "All-Out Attack" and "finishing touch." They will perform it if the entire party is Downed, or if the party takes too much time to bring them to the next HP threshold, they will use Ardha to Down the entire party and initiate it. If they do so, it will instantly defeat the party regardless of their HP, defense or resistances. In Royal, their complete self, Lavenza, can perform an All-Out Attack by splitting back into the Twins before merging back for the finishing touch.

In Persona 5 Royal, as part of her trait, Futaba Sakura can join in on an All-Out Attack. In hers, she summons a giant bomb and will wipe out all enemies instantly. During the prologue, the protagonist and Sumire's illustrations are not shown when initiating.

All finishing touches can be viewed in the Thieves Den (all without the enemies and the blood).

Each character has a unique victory screen if they are the one who initiates the All-Out Attack. These victory screens also have a tagline and are as follows:

In Persona 5 The Animation, those taglines do not appear for a "finishing touch" when an All-Out Attack is occurred until Episode 5 "The Phantoms." This is considered as an error in the original TV version of Episode 2 "Let's take back what's dear to you" and was fixed in the home video release version.

Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth[]

Compared to Persona Q, the conditions for an All-Out Attack are more straightforward in Q2. Like with most other Persona games, hitting enemy weaknesses or getting critical hits will knock them down; when all enemies have been Downed, an All-Out Attack can be initiated, dealing massive damage to all enemies. If the All-Out Attack is not lethal, any survivors lose their "Downed" state, meaning the party can knock them down again with any remaining queued actions to trigger another All-Out Attack in the same turn.

There may be reasons to not perform an All-Out Attack when given the opportunity. Downed enemies have their turn order pushed far back or may even be forced to skip their turn entirely, so relenting can help preserve Boosts for the next turn if one is certain their All-Out Attack won't be lethal. Some enemies or bosses, such as Super Kamoshidaman and Order Gigant, are known to immediately cover their weaknesses the moment they recover from an All-Out Attack, which can make it difficult to sustain Boost during a fight.

If the battle is completed with an All-Out Attack, not only does the game display a unique graphic for the battle's end, but the party will receive a 1.2x multiplier to EXP from the battle. This Finish Bonus can be augmented with sidequest rewards; some rewards increase the bonus multiplier even further (up to 2x), and one reward allows the party to carry any Boosts they have into the next fight.

Caroline and Justine, Margaret, Elizabeth and Theodore can also use All-Out Attacks during their ultimate boss fight.

Persona 5 Strikers[]

An All-Out Attack can be triggered on any enemy who is Downed by having all of their Down Gauges broken, either by attacking the enemy's weakness or landing a Technical or Critical Hit. There must be at least two active party members on the field to trigger an All-Out Attack, or else it will simply produce an additional 1 More. An All-Out Attack can be executed with any character, even if the protagonist is incapacitated. When an All-Out Attack is activated, all available party members will jump to the enemy's location and deal heavy Almighty damage to all enemies within a certain radius while pulling other enemies on the field into its attack range.

When executing an All-Out Attack against a boss enemy, a unique animation will play where the screen turns red and the enemies become silhouettes (emulating the All-Out Attacks from the original Persona 5) before the party attacks their foes, ending with a "finishing touch" of the party posing in front of the enemy with a "TAKE YOUR HEART" tagline on-screen.

The Demiurge cannot normally be struck with an All-Out Attack even if its Shield Gauges are broken. After its health is depleted during its second phase, the Demiurge is defeated with a unique cinematic All-Out Attack that takes the form of a cutscene.

Persona 5 Tactica[]

An All-Out Attack, now known as Triple Threat ("Tribangle" in the Japanese version), can be triggered upon any enemy who is Downed. Unlike the previous games, all three party members need to setup a triangle, surrounding the downed enemy. Any enemies that are surrounded will be damaged. Upon activation, the word "GOOOOOO!!!" appears during the animation and all three members attack the targeted enemies for massive damage. When Toshiro Kasukabe joins the party, he will join in the Triple Threats, with them now having four participants like in previous Persona games. Toshiro cannot activate them, however, he instead joins in when someone else activates them.

Marie features a unique "finishing touch" after punishing the protagonist and Morgana.

  • Marie - "Kneel or Die"

Persona 5: The Phantom X[]

Most of the same rules for Persona 5 All-Out Attacks apply here. However, any active team member (except Navigators) can initiate an All-Out Attack, as opposed to solely the protagonist. The initiator will be the one to have the finishing touch displayed. Navigator units will have their finishing touch displayed if they used a skill the turn before an AOA attack was triggered.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version of Persona 3 and Persona 4, the THUMPs and WHAMs are Japanese onomatopoeia.
  • In Persona 4: The Animation, this cut-in is used before Yosuke and the others pin down a stalker. It is also used when Yu hits 6 in Darts as the "King," ordering them to sit on his lap. In Persona 4: The Golden Animation, the cut-in is also used during the Midnight Trivia Miracle Quiz when it's down to the final question.
  • In Persona 3 Portable, during SEES' Rank 5 Social Link event at Yakushima, there's an additional scene where the girls "down" Junpei in the water and leave him open to an "All-Out Attack." The protagonist may then choose to proceed with the attack or relent.
  • In Persona 4 Golden, the characters' All-Out Attacks were updated. The original portraits are still used during the party members' follow-up attacks.
  • In the Japanese and Asian versions of Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, All-Out Attacks are called Punishments.
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse has an attack where Nanashi's friends work together to attack any enemy. This move seems to resemble the All-Out Attack.
  • While traditional finishing touches aren't present in Persona 5 Strikers, the protagonist's original finishing touch is referenced in a cutscene where he performs the glove-tightening animation after attacking a group of Shadows with Arsène in the Shibuya Jail.
    • The same goes in Persona 5 Tactica, with Marie having her unique finishing touch after punishing the protagonist and Ryuji. Her finishing touch can be viewed in Illustrations (without blood) and Movie (with blood). Both of which are shown without the cutscene border.
  • All finishing touches in Persona 5/Persona 5 Royal (without the enemies and the blood) and Persona 3 Reload are also used as promotional goods and order bonuses in Japanese retailers.
  • In Persona 5 The Phantom X, Figure Skater Kotone Montagne is the only one does not have victory screen tagline with words but instead a musical notes. The note string is taken from The Swan by Saint Saens which also served as inspiration for the alt itself.

Appearances in Other Media[]

  • In Granblue Fantasy, Ren's Charge Attack has a similar style to Persona 5. Ren, Morgana, Ryuji, Ann or Yusuke may be shown at random for its "finishing touch" and can provide a unique skill:
    • Ren can increase his Double Attack rate by 30% for 3 turns (guarenteed Double Attack for 3.5 turns at 5 stars) if he appears for his "finishing touch." Furthermore, he has a special "finishing touch," albeit without the quote, "THE SHOW'S OVER," for his enhanced version, in which he summons the other four Phantom Thief members (Morgana, Ryuji, Ann and Yusuke) upon his 5 star uncap.
    • Ren can restore 30% of his HP, with a healing cap of 1,500 HP (3,000 HP at 5 stars), if Morgana appears for his "finishing touch." Morgana's skill is Dia.
    • Ren can increase his Attack power by 30% for 3 turns (80% for 3.5 turns at 5 stars) if Ryuji appears for his "finishing touch." Ryuji's skill is Tarukaja.
    • The enemy will decrease its Attack power for 3 minutes (with the addition of decreasing its defense power by 30% for 3 minutes at 5 stars) if Ann appears for her "finishing touch." Ann's skill is Tarunda.
    • Ren will increase his Repel strength by 40% for 2 hits (60% at 5 stars), if nessesary, if Yusuke appears for his "finishing touch." Yusuke's skill is Counter.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Joker's Final Smash has a similar style to Persona 5. Joker dashes forward once or twice, if the control stick is tilted in the opposite direction, and if he connects with an enemy, he will summon his fellow Phantom Thieves. There are two sets of allies he can call upon with either Morgana or Futaba acting as Navigator: Morgana, Ryuji and Ann; or Yusuke, Makoto and Haru. The "finishing touch" scene replaces the blood with sparkles. Arsène, however, doesn't alter his Final Smash. If the match ends with an All-Out Attack when the target has 100% damage or a low amount of stamina (which is required to instantly KO an enemy), it will go into the results screen, just like in Persona 5.
  • In Star Ocean: Anamnesis, Futaba and Rena's Rush Mode Attacks has a similar style to Persona 5. Both finishing touches have been adjusted to fit the portrait orientation. Futaba's bomb has a skin based on Coro. Rena joins alongside Evelysse and Tika and her "finishing touch" is "WIN YOUR HEART." Also, in an event scene, Rena, Ren, Kasumi, Yu and Makoto go in for an All-Out Attack. The illustration for that Persona 5 styled All-Out Attack in the event scene was done by Yukihiro Kajimoto.
  • In Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space, Joker and Morgana's Another Force has a similar style to Persona 5. During a quest, Joker's All-Out Attack is performed automatically after an event scene. Also, in an event scene, Joker teams up with Aldo for a unique version of his "finishing touch." Morgana can team up with Joker to trigger Another Force and his All-Out Attack.
  • In both Dartslive 2 and Dartslive 3, the All-Out Attacks in Persona 5 and its "finishing touches" are used as Award Movies.
  • In Alchemy Stars, the start-up animation is not shown.
  • In BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!, all Afterglow members have their Persona 5 inspired "finishing touches" as normal illustrated cards.
  • In Kyoto Kotoba RPG: Kotodaman, Joker's Special Attack has a similar style to Persona 5 following Arsène's attack.
  • In Sword Art Online Memory Defrag, the following characters can preform an all out attack with a finishing touch using a 3rd Sword Skill when an enemy's health is at 10% or lower: Kirito [VR World Fool], Asuna [VR World Empress], Sinon [VR World High Priestess], Joker [Figureless Identity], Panther [Cat's Fierce Gaze], Skull [Lightning Emblem], Yuuki [VR World Hermit]. Sword Art Online characters and Persona 5 characters have their separate All-Out Attack groups. All of the "finishing touches" are also adjusted to fit the portrait orientation.
  • In War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Joker, Makoto and Kasumi's Limit Bursts have a similar style to Persona 5, but it's more different then its original counterparts. All three characters attack alongside their Personas before doing their "finishing touches" ending with an explosion.
  • In AFK Arena, one of Joker's Skills has a similar style to Persona 5, but it has been redesigned, with the "finishing touch" quote, "THE SHOW'S OVER" on the top of the screen in a different font, and is adjusted to fit the portrait orientation.
  • In Sega Net Mahjong MJ (PC/Mobile), the "finishing touches" in Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal are used as table skins.
