Profile[]
Persona 5[]
Big Bang Burger is a fast food restaurant chain run by Okumura Foods (オクムラフーズ*)?. Originally a cafe created by Kunikazu Okumura's father, it had begun to experience rapid growth as a fast food chain under the ambitious man's guidance. According to his book "The Okumura Way", he used his logical management skills to revive his company when it was on the verge of bankruptcy, after which he started Big Bang Burger.[1] The company's headquarters are located in Roppongi. Big Bang Burger has been wildly successful after Okumura became CEO and has opened various locations in Japan and later overseas, such as Hawaii.
During the events of Persona 5, there has been heavy implication that Okumura Foods requested several psychotic breakdown incidents to discredit rival restaurants, first instance being about Wild-Duck Burger losing stock over a "nude chef selfie" from an employee, albeit the man did not realize he was nude. For more information on all incidents in Japan, see Psychotic breakdown → Other incidents. This would lead to scandals and the restaurants' executives resigning. According to a rumor, the damage would be severe enough that all of Big Bang Burger's competition mysteriously pulled out. Prosecutor Sae Niijima investigated these cases, and linked Kunikazu Okumura as a beneficiary to the incidents.
Even though the incidents weren't thought to be the work of Big Bang Burger, the restaurant giant still had a bad reputation among the public, as it's said that Okumura bears little care about his employees, preferring to work them overtime and driving them to fatigue or death instead, with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts later clarifying that for themselves. They've also been using low-quality ingredients from overseas for their products. The Big Bang Burger is a major theme in Okumura's Palace, as it's centered around his fast-food chain. Due to his change of heart, Okumura would confess to the public of his treatment of his employees, but would experience a mental shutdown shortly thereafter.
After Kunikazu's death, Okumura Foods would be temporarily thrown into disarray. Takakura, a longtime employee active since the company's infancy, temporarily assumes the position of Acting President for Kunikazu's daughter, Haru Okumura and tries to act in her best interests. In Haru's Confidant, the protagonist helps her overcome her insecurities and the company is reborn anew with Takamura's guidance. In Persona 5 Strikers, which takes place a year later, Haru is studying how to manage the company. During the country-wide tour, she visits the local Big Bang Burger outlet located in each city the Phantom Thieves visit in order to make sure the employees are happy and well.
Shops[]
In Persona 5, the protagonist can buy consumable items from Big Bang Burger in Central Street of Shibuya, mainly burgers. All the items sold are able to restore HP to all allies. There are certain products that can only be bought during certain seasons. Additionally, maxing out Haru Okumura's Confidant will add the Supernova Burger to the list. For more information, see Confidant/Haru Okumura.
The shop can be found again while the party visits several prefectures of Japan in Persona 5 Strikers.
Activities[]
"What about Big Bang Burger? The one on Central Street is holding a contest right now. The Big Bang Challenge or whatever. If you go at night, you can eat for only 500 yen."
Generally, the Big Bang Burger is similar to other food chain restaurants found in other Persona games, such as the Wild-Duck Burger in Persona 3 and Chinese Diner Aiya in Persona 4. Both of these locations focus on ranking the Courage Social Stat and include a special meal activity.
The protagonist is able to take the Big Bang Challenge for a fee during the daytime, dependent on the rank of the challenge (1st challenge is ¥1,200, 2nd is ¥1,500, and 3rd is ¥1,800) but it's always discounted to ¥500 during the night. Partaking will pass time. The activity demands the challenger eats a huge burger under a time limit. There are three challenges with different levels of difficulty, and they can only be completed in order, no longer being accessible after being completed.
Technically, the deciding factors are the protagonist's Social Stats: he'll need to have both his Guts, Knowledge and Proficiency at a certain Rank to beat the challenge. The first challenge requires the three aforementioned stats to be at Rank 2, with the second one at Rank 3, and the last at Rank 4. If the protagonist completes the challenge, he is awarded with an accessory, depending on the difficulty: the 2nd Mate Badge, 1st Mate Badge, and the Captain Badge respectively, which give additional HP to the user. He will also gain a Social Stat boost to all his stats (except Kindness), with the level of difficulty determining the points each stat gets: 1 for the first, 2 for the 2nd, and 3 for the 3rd. However, if the protagonist doesn't meet the necessary criteria, he will fail the challenge, and will have to try again another time, although his Guts will gain a stat boost (point gain is equivalent to the amount of points an individual stat would receive upon beating the respective challenge.)[2][3]
After completing the three challenges, the protagonist can partake in the activity again, but the payoff for this will instead be 10 Big Bang Burgers and 3 points of Guts.
Big Bang Burger is also a recurring location for hangouts and Confidant events with Ann Takamaki, Makoto Niijima, Haru Okumura, and in Persona 5 Royal only, Caroline & Justine.

Trivia[]
- The term "Big Bang" refers to a physical theory about how universes are created, and with the exception of the Gyutan Burger, all of the items sold in Big Bang Burger are named after astronomical bodies and phenomenons. The badges obtained for the Big Bang challenge are also named after space exploration crew rankings. This is likely due to its former CEO Okumura being a huge sci-fi fan who based his fast food joints and products after a sci-fi kit he was unable to buy when he was young.
- The fast food restaurant's mascot is Burger-kun (バーガーくん, Bāgā-kun)?. The protagonist can obtain a doll of him from a crane game and put it in his room.
- Some of Shadow Okumura's workers' skills in his boss battle are named after his fast food chain: particularly Big Bang Order and Big Bang Challenge.
- In Persona 5 Strikers, a Big Bang Burger stall can be seen in the Shibuya Jail and Tokyo Tower. However, it is merely a background object, and when the party visits Tokyo Tower it is already overlaid with the Tree of Knowledge.
- Additionally, a Big Bang Burger can be found in Osaka, but it's not accessible at that point.
- In the Steam version of Persona 5 Royal, Big Bang Burger represents the game's Level 2 badge.
- Despite one can visit Big Bang Burger during their free time and Okumura is said to subject his employees to horrible overworking, none of the clerks in the fast food joints are seen acting erratically at any point during the game.
