Marie Anto is the arranged fiancee of Toshiro Kasukabe and thus the potential future first lady of Japan. Her cognitive self is a major antagonist in Persona 5 Tactica, the titular ruler of the Marie Kingdom and the leader of its Legionnaires.

Appearances[]

Design[]

The Cognitive version of Marie wears a wedding gown style of leotard along with white opera length gloves, knee high boots and a majorette hat with her initial on it and a wedding veil underneath. She also has magenta skin, pink eyes, light brown hair tied in a low bun and is tall in stature.

The real Marie is a young woman with dark red eyes and long, brown hair. She wears a ring on her right hand and an open light purple jacket and a long skirt of the same color.

Personality[]

The cognitive copy of Marie rules the other world as a tyrant who captured the citizens and makes them work for her against their wills for the sake of a a grand wedding. As an exaggeration of her controlling tendencies, the cognitive Marie is a sadistic queen who desired a grand wedding to the point that she enslaves her Kingdom's population to arrange it for her, and the person she marries is nothing short of a slave. She is extremely sadistic and delights on finding ways to torture her prisoners. She also gets angered very easily and turns into a screaming maniac with contorted expressions when being rejected by Toshiro.

The real Marie is best described as a haughty and possessive fiancee towards Toshiro. She views Toshiro as a puppet and a valuable asset for her to gain political fame as the first lady of Japan. Therefore, Toshiro does not like her and was only forced to marry her because of his father arranging the marriage for Toshiro as preparations for his upcoming premiership. As shown in the ending, just like her cognitive form she's quick to anger, as she's quick to contort into a deranged expression upon seeing Toshiro return after missing for a while. The real Marie's anger however, is nowhere near as unhinged as her cognitive counterpart.

Profile[]

Persona 5 Tactica[]

Marie Anto is the daughter of a CEO of a massive corporate conglomerate. As a bid to secure a powerful backing for his son Toshiro Kasukabe's premiership, Minister Kasukabe arranged a marriage between her and Toshiro. Despite this, Marie only saw him as a useful puppet and is a rather haughty and controlling mistress towards Toshiro, who did not like her that much because of that.

When Salmael captured Toshiro inside his Kingdom for elimination, one of the cognitive tyrants he erected to quash his will was a cognitive version of Marie who has her controlling tendencies heavily exaggerated into downright sadism. However, she was opposed by a manifestation of Toshiro's willpower known as Erina. According to Erina, the Marie copy suddenly shown up one day and declared everyone in the kingdom as her property. Her soldiers, the Legionnaires are so powerful that they can only be briefly stopped and seized full control on the Kingdom. Despite Erina led the Rebel Corps against her, all they can do is to fight her to a stalemate. The Marie copy enslaved everyone she got her hands on and forced them to arrange a grand wedding for her. She sent rebels into prisoner camps where they will be forced to train wedding reception skills without break. Furthermore, the groom she gets her hands on is treated as nothing more than a slave or puppet, as shown with the plushie representing Toshiro who yearns for Marie to dominate her.

At the start of the game, Marie and Kasukabe (both in silhouettes) discuss the disappearance of the minister's son. While Marie was nervous about it, Kasukabe reassured her that it will only be a small bump and his son will return and become prime minister accordingly.

P5T Phantom Thieves brainwashed by Marie

The Phantom Thieves (Ryuji, Haru, Yusuke, Makoto) brainwashed by Marie

When Toshiro was trapped in the other world, he was captured and imprisoned by the Marie copy.

The copy Marie first approaches the Phantom Thieves of Hearts when they intrude into the Marie Kingdom, riding atop a large, spiked vehicle and surrounding the Phantom Thieves with a massive amount of Legionnaires. Two of her Legionnaires manage to capture Ryuji Sakamoto, at which she blows a kiss that brainwashes him into their service. After failing to bring Ryuji back to his senses, she blows a massive kiss that brainwashes all of the other Phantom Thieves bar the protagonist and Morgana. When brainwashed, their masks become silver with a lipstick mark and they have a collar around their neck. Their eyes become dulled out, and they have Marie's voice overlaid upon theirs. The brainwashed Phantom Thieves are forced to praise Marie (which they still remember even after being snapped out) and she can sometimes speak through them.

Most of the first arc was spent on rescuing the party members brainwashed by Marie. Through their battle against the brainwashed Ann and Futaba, they learn that they are brainwashed through special flag poles set up by her. Once the flag is destroyed, Erina can impale her spear through the flag posts and snap the Phantom Thief members out from their brainwashing. The party manages to save Ann, Futaba, Ryuji and Haru, although Erina was shot by a sniper before she could save Makoto and Yusuke and cannot place the second flag, leaving Toshiro to put it on its post to liberate them. Marie shows up trying to kill the Phantom Thieves only for a group of rebels to buy time for them to escape. With all party members complete, Toshiro devises a plan to free all the imprisoned rebels before encroaching her castle.

Once the phantom thieves encroach her castle, a projector screen displays a seemingly recent flashback where the real Marie expresses to Toshiro about her intent to turn him into her own personal political puppet while he begrudgingly tolerates her antics. Toshiro regains his memories about Marie and the Phantom Thieves get an exact detail on who she is.

The Phantom Thieves eventually manage to reach Marie in a wedding chapel-like stage. When Toshiro rebukes her, it fills her with a hysterical fit of anger and she attacks them. Despite also bringing her spiked vehicle to the battle and healing back to full health after being defeated once, Marie is baited by the Phantom Thieves right under the chapel bell and is crushed under it.

After her defeat, Marie speaks of a great crime Toshiro committed before vanishing. Because the copy Marie is not a Shadow Self, the real Marie remains alive.

During the descent on Salmael's Kingdom, a illusion of Marie was erected upon by Salmael to eliminate the party. Unlike the original Marie, this one is seemingly in a state of constant, unhinged rage. The special operation to drop the chandelier on top of her is also absent, as the illusion dissipates into feathers and white light instantly after her HP drops to zero.

During the epilogue of the game, Toshiro returns in front of the real Marie and Yoshiki. She berates him for running away from the pressure as usual and is about to throw a fit only for Yoshiki to calm her down and ask Toshiro to present a cover-up story he wrote during his press conference. Much to Marie and Yoshiki's dismay, Toshiro confesses to the press about his shortcomings, indicts Yoshiki for fraud and announces that he will break the arranged marriage with Marie. Marie is presumably arrested alongside Yoshiki afterwards and her marriage with Toshiro was rendered null and void.

Etymology[]

The pronunciation of her name, "Mah-ree-eh," comes from the words Marié, which means "married" in French. This references Marie's appearance and her desire to have a grand wedding.

She might also be named after Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution. Marie's rule over the French-style Marie Kingdom, the revolution led by the Rebel Corps and her real-life counterpart's status as the potential future first lady, loosely parallels Marie Antoinette's circumstances. Her real name is also the first nine letters of the historical character's name, (Marie Antoinette), and the kanji on her name is pronounced in the same way.

Trivia[]

  • According to Toshiro, Marie would sometimes throw hysterics and he had to tolerate her.
  • The ultimate guide to appeasing Lady Marie is to never ever get on her nerves, never entertain her with magic tricks (because she will lose it if she can't figure out how something works) and curve your back a little and make a snug fit when you're being her chair.
